August 1812, Darcy and Bingley have left Hertfordshire, both suffering from rejected proposals. Bingley slowly recovers and in November 1813 he marries Georgiana Darcy. While Darcy is still in London, the Gardiners invite Elizabeth to town for Christmas.
An unusual scenario begins this story which isn't well-explained initially: Bingley and Darcy had returned to Netherfield following the Lydia/Wickham debacle. Bingley proposes but Jane refuses since she doesn't trust him to be constant. Elizabeth rejects Darcy even though she loves him because she fears Jane will be in too much contact with Bingley.
Elizabeth falls into a severe case of the blues and is sent to the Gardiners to recover. While in London, she again encounters Darcy.
This variation centers around Elizabeth's relationship with her sister, Jane. Jane has turned down Bingley's proposal when he returns to Netherfield. She sees his persuadable nature as a weakness which takes away any trust which is necessary for a successful marriage. Elizabeth turns down Darcy's second proposal, knowing that marrying him would put Jane in contact with Bingley in the future.
Importantly...Elizabeth does admit to Darcy that she loves him but she puts Jane's well being ahead of his need for her in his life.
SPOILER: Jane while visiting Georgiana with Elizabeth at Darcy House falls ill and despite the best medical care dies. On her death bed she exacts a promise from Elizabeth. So it is that we read of Elizabeth's time in mourning and her struggle to keep that promise, to adjust her feelings about what that means and how she will live with that.
The author does an excellent job of describing the feelings, the relationship between Jane and Elizabeth. This is a poignant story. While there are many stories with the loss of Mr. Bennet I cannot remember one in which this event occurred.
In this Pride and Prejudice variation August 1812 has arrived and Darcy and Bingley leave Longbourn after both have had their marriage proposals rejected. For Darcy this is the second time. The future brings happiness to Bingley with Georgiana Darcy but what about Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy. An enjoyable story
Hmm. This Pride and Prejudice fanfiction made some very interesting choices.
First, Jane REFUSED Mr. Bingley's proposal, and Elizabeth refused Darcy's second one! I was shook when I figured out what was going on at the beginning.
First I wasn't pleased, because I like Jane/Bingley and this story's endgame, Georgiana/Bingley, is typically not my thing. I eventually came around to it, though. The second bold choice is that I'm hiding this as a spoiler so everyone else can feel the same dawning realization that I felt while reading.
No... surely not? No, really? Yes. Really. They did that.
Anyway, Elizabeth and Darcy circling back around to each other wasn't nearly as protracted as it could have been. It was actually unexpectedly fast, and they spend the majority of the story being in love. It's fine. I was enjoying it until they got engaged, and then it turned into a game of chicken with regards to physical affection. This story wasn't nearly as vulgar as some, but there is one too-detailed, explicit sex scene. And they are just so indiscreet and risky with their choices of before-marriage behavior that it soured me to the narrative somewhat.
There's also a B plot where an OC gets engaged to Colonel Fitzwilliam which I actually liked, but it was very quick and underdeveloped.
Overall, this is a very alright P&P fanfiction. I liked some of the bold plot choices it made, but in execution it isn't anything to write home about.
The angst. And Elizabeth completely muddled thinking; thinking that she is being a martyr and that she is the only one sacrificing (quite arrogant, condescending and high handed given that she is taking everyone else's power of decision away - eye roll - good on Jane for calling her out on it.). Poor Jane.
