This was a real fun book about a group of magicians all competing to become the magical representative of their home. (They don’t outright state all the duties of this representative in this book, but they seem to be some sort of protector of the realm, or that was the impression I got.)

This volume very much felt like it was setting the scene for a larger story, lots of plot seeds being planted and world building tid bits trickling out, although i still feel like I have a lot to learn about this world and how everything works within it. This wasn’t a big issue for me as I felt their was enough mystery and intrigue teased to be compelling, and I look forward to finding out more about the world in future volumes.

The aspect of this book I really loved though was the core cast of characters, Robin cleverly shifts the focal point of the story chapter by chapter exploring and developing each of the various competitors in turn (as well as some other supporting characters). We are shown snippets of their lives and explore their relationships with their family and friends as well as their motivations for entering the competition in the first place leading to some very interesting character dynamics. This method of telling the story through different perspectives really helped give us a broader view of the situation and gave all of the characters a lot more depth and complexity.

I also really appreciate how human and relatable the core cast feel, rather than being a case of good vs bad people, we have a group of individuals that on occasion behave reprehensibly towards each other, (often stemming from a place of fear, frustration or insecurity) but will also often experience moments of compassion, empathy and remorse, leading to some really interesting character dynamics, and some heartbreaking moments. By the end of this volume I definitely felt very attached to the whole ensemble, and can’t wait to find out more about them all and see how they all develop in future instalments.

I must also mention the art, it’s fantastic! Robin really has a flare for visual humour, character expressions / body language are illustrated superbly creating some really funny and charming moments throughout the story. Robin also weaves some real magic with the colouring in this book, expertly adapting the palette to compliment and augment the atmosphere and set the tone for each scene.

To sum up, thoroughly enjoyed this and really excited to read what’s next!

A really fun graphic novel but it felt more like a second volume or a volume 1.5 instead of the first one. We are immediately thrown into the world and throughout the volume I was wondering if I missed certain hints/earlier mentioned. Like with the girl on the island. Or how magic works exactly. Or why everyone is so hyped to be part of a contest which reminded me more of those anime Saturday morning exercises. But it was a lot of fun to read with tons of fun moments, fashion, great characters (well except for the green lady she can just fuck off), I liked that we didn't just get to see things from Lucy's POV, but also others. And Lucy was just the sweetest and I hope that she can stand up against her master/boss/whatever he is.

I definitely would like to read the next volume.

I didn't like it but I sort of want to find out what happens next. Or better, I would like to understand the world-building a bit better. It wasn't exactly clear in these 25o and odd pages.

There are seven people with magic powers competing to be the next representative. We don't exactly know what a representative does but it sure is important. The seven people are quite different from each other: there's a spoiled girl, a warrior-in-training, someone who flies on a broom, and someone who apparently doesn't have any magic but compete nonetheless. Which is kind of weird for me.

The seven characters are not that likable and I couldn't pick a favorite.

The only interesting part was when they find that reddish creature in the middle of the island. This is probably the only reason I'll probably read the second volume as well.

The art is OK but I'm not a big fan of this kind of drawings.
