About the author

Tamil language Novel Writer, Journalist, Poet & Critic late Ramaswamy Aiyer Krishnamurthy also known as ‘Kalki’. He derived his pen name from the suffixes of his wife name Kalyani and his name Krishnamurthy in Tamil form கல்யாணி and கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி as Kalki (கல்கி). His name also represents “Kalki avatar”, the tenth and last avatar of the Hindu God Vishnu.

His writings includes over 120 short stories, 10 novelettes, 5 novels, 3 historical romances, editorial and political writings and hundreds of film and music reviews. Krishnamurthy’s witty, incisive comments on politics, literature, music and other forms of art were looked forward to with unceasing interest by readers. He wrote under the pen names of ‘Kalki’, ‘Ra. Ki’, ‘Tamil Theni’, ‘Karnatakam’ and so on.

The success that Krishnamurthy attained in the realm of historical fiction is phenomenal. Sixty years ago, at a time when the literacy level was low and when the English-educated Tamils looked down on writings in Tamil, Kalki’s circulation touched 71,000 copies – the largest for any weekly in the county then – when it serialised his historical novels. Kalki had also the genius to classify the historical and non-historical events, historical and non-historical characters and how much the novel owes to history.

கனவு உலகத்தையும் நிஜ உலகத்தையும் இணைத்து சிறப்பான காதல் கதை. முடிவு நல்லதாக இருந்திருக்கலாம் என ஏக்கம் கொள்ள வைத்த காதல் கதை(கதை சொல்லும் பாணி). அமரர் கல்கியின் எழுத்தை முதன்முறையாக வாசிக்கிறேன். அவருடைய எழுத்துகளை அதிகம் படிக்கச் சொல்லுகிறது இந்தப் புத்தகம்.

The injustice of reading the best book by the author first is that all the other books will be underwhelming.

Solaimalai Ilavarsi by Kalki is an average fare that was a bit too melodramatic to my liking. 2 parallel stories - one in the dreams and one in reality of a revolutionary freedom fighter Kumaralingam. In the dreams, he is the brave prince Ulaganathan who takes refuge in his enemy's Solaimalai palace where he meets the princess Manikkavalli. In reality he takes refuge in the same ruins where he meets village girl Ponnammal.

The story in the dreams comes true in reality as well that both of them are convinced they know how it will end. And then end it does, so unsatisfactorily for such a book.

The tamil of course is brilliant, but then the plot is nothing to recommend. This is a tick in the box read for Kalki (PS) readers.

இன்று நான் முடித்த புத்தகத்தின் பெயர் "சோலைமலை இளவரசி". இந்த புத்தகத்தை எழுதியவர் அமரர் கல்கி. பொன்னியின் செல்வன், பார்த்திபன் கனவு, சிவகாமியின் சபதம் மற்றும் மோகினி தீவு ஆகிய படைப்புகளை படித்தபின் கல்கி அவர்களின் படைப்பில் நான் படிக்கும் ஐந்தாவது புத்தகம்.
சோலைமலை இளவரசி என்னும் இந்த புத்தகம் ரிதம் வெளியீடு என்னும் பதிப்பகத்தார் மூலமாக கிடைத்த முதல் பதிப்பு. இந்த புத்தகத்தில் இதுவரை ஒரே பதிப்பு வந்திருக்கிறது அதுவும் 2022ஆம் வருடம்.

குறும்கதைகளில் முன்னே படித்த மோகினி தீவு கதைக்கு ஒப்பிடுகையில் பல மடங்கு நன்றாகவே இருந்தது இந்த கதை. எதிர்பார்ப்பு இன்றி படித்ததால் என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.
இந்த ரிதம் வெளியீட்டு கதைக்கு, அதனுடைய முதல் பதிப்புக்கு அட்டை வடிவமைப்பு தந்தவர் எஸ். உதயகுமார். மணியம் ஓவியம் அல்லது மணியம் செல்வம் ஓவியம் அல்லது பத்மவாசன் ஓவியம் ஒப்பிடமுடியாது. ஆனால் உதயகுமார் அட்டை ஓவியம் சுமாருக்கு மேலாகவே இருந்தது.

First, about the story itself: I was impressed by how quickly I fell for the characters. There are only a handful of main characters, but it was quite a captivating story. I was rooting for the characters in no time, and I was very invested in knowing what's coming next. The story took some unexpected turns and ended at a bittersweet place that I didn't foresee. I found the fantasy elements and the weaving of the two parallel stories to be very clever and quite interesting. Embedding of historical elements in the story also helped me get some context. While the female lead(s) was always portrayed positively and had plenty of wit, I wasn't too pleased about some of the dialogues, especially those that went along the lines of "what job do I have if not to serve my partner." Giving the story some benefit of doubt because of the times back then, I'd say it was a great read overall!

Now, about the format and how I read the book: It was a very interesting experience! Finally, I can now say I've "read" a Tamil novel. I listened to the audiobook through Kadhai Osai, a podcast that I discovered very recently. The narrator, Deepika Arun, does a fantastic job of voice acting all the characters. I have never read anything in Tamil before, especially something that involves a lot of descriptions and dialogues (except for a few short stories that my grandmother sometimes reads to me). And, this was the first time I didn't have anyone reading with me to stop and ask meanings to. So, I think it's reasonable to assume I only have a contextual understanding of many words. But I'm so proud to say that I think I have a very clear idea of the story nevertheless. I would love to read the story by myself again to get more comfortable with reading Tamil. And, if you have recommendations for such short novels / novellas in Tamil, definitely let me know! I see exciting times ahead now that I've starting my reading journey in a language that's not English, and what better language than my mother tongue Tamil?

1947 காலக்கட்டத்தில் இப்படி ஒரு fiction + parallel universe concept கதையை படைத்திருக்க முடியுமா, அதிலும் அரசியல் கலந்த கதையாக அமைந்தது மேலும் ஆச்சரியத்தை அழித்தது.

சங்ககால இராஜ வாழ்க்கைக்கும், தற்கால தேசத் தொண்ட வாழ்க்கைக்கும் நடுவில் சிக்கி தவிக்கும் குமாரலிங்கத்தின் கதைதான் இந்த சோலைமலை இளவரசி.

குமாரலிங்கம், தனது பூர்வ ஜென்ம நினைவுகளால் சிக்கித் தவிக்கிறான். 300 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு ,ஆங்கிலேயரை எதிர்த்த மாறனேந்தல் இளவரசன், உலகநாத தேவனாக தன்னை கனவில் காண்கிறான்.

ஆங்கிலேயரிடம் இருந்து தப்பிக்க, சோலைமலை அரண்மனைக்குள் உலகநாதன் புக், அந்நாட்டின் இளவரசி அவனுக்கு உதவிக்கரம் கொடுக்கிறாள். இருவரும் காதலில் திளைத்திருக்கையில், விதி அவனை ஆங்கிலேயர்களின் சிக்க வைக்கிறது.

என் மனதில் எழும் உணர்ச்சிகளை விவரிக்க வார்த்தைகள் இல்லை. கண்களில் கண்ணீருடனும் மனதில் ஆழ்ந்த சோகத்தோடும் எழுதும் வரிகள் இவை.

கல்கி எழுதும் அணைத்து வகை ஸ்வபாவகளும் மனதைக் கவரும் விதமாய் இருக்கும். எனினும் அவரின் காதல் வர்ணனைகளுக்கு என் இதயத்தில் ஓர் தனி இடம் உண்டு. பலரும் அவை வழவழவென கதையை இழுக்கும் விதமாக இருப்பதாகச் சொல்லிக் கேட்டிருக்கிறேன், ஆனால் அவ்வர்ணனைகளில் இருக்கும் ஆழ்ந்த உணர்ச்சிகள் ஒவ்வொன்றும் என்னை அணைக்காமல் சென்றதில்லை. ஏனோ அவற்றைப் படிக்கும்போது என் நெஞ்சில் ஓர் இனம்புரியா கிளர்ச்சி.

கல்கியின் இக்கதையைப் பற்றிய எவ்விதத் தகவலும் அறியாமல் நான் எதர்ச்சியாகப் படிக்கத் தொடங்கினேன். கல்கியைப் பற்றி அறிந்திருப்பதால் இக்கதையும் வரலாற்றைத் தழுவி அமைந்திருக்கும் என்ற ஓர் எண்ணம் மட்டும் இருந்தது.

குமாரலிங்கம்-பொன்னம்மாளின் கதையும் , உலகநாதபாண்டியன்-மாணிக்கவல்லியின் கதையும் ஒரே விதத்தில் அமைந்தது திகிலாய் இருந்தது. அவர்களை நாம் அறிந்த ஒரு சில நிமிடங்களிலேயே அவர்கள் மீதும் அவர்களின் காதல் மீதும் அளவு கடந்த விருப்பம் ஏற்பட்டது. எப்படியேனும் அவரகள் காதல் வென்று விடாதா என்ற ஏக்கம் இருந்தது.

இத்தகைய முடிவுடன் கதாசிரியர் என் இதயத்தை உடைத்து விட்டார்.

Solaimalai Ilavarasi is an another excellent read from author Kalki's collections. The story involves a sequence of events that spins around the characters' past and present lives. The exchange of dialogues between the characters express their deep love. Evergreen author, Kalki, handled the free flow of romantic conversations in a natural way. The author has clearly made a segregation while describing the past events and the present ones and we need to truly admire the way how the segregation was beautifully blended such that it don't look odd. Love wins the painful climax and the storyline teaches us that "fate is something which is unchangeable". Author is very strong with the fact that "Sometimes, there is a rebirth for a human being based on God's judgement and Karma". A short read and will not take more than 3 days for a normal paced reader. A different novel and not to be missed out.

In சோலைமலை இளவரசி (Solaimalai Ilavarasi), Kalki experiments with the concept of reincarnation and the cyclical nature of history. It’s important to note that this book was published around 1947, a time when the theme of reincarnation was not as widely explored in Tamil literature and cinema as it is today. Readers familiar with modern movies like Magadheera or Kanguva might find the concept less novel, but for its time, it was quite a innovative theme.

The book itself is a quick and engaging read. Kalki skillfully draws readers into the narrative, and we become invested in the characters early on. However, the story’s ending feels somewhat abrupt and rushed, leaving the reader wanting a better closure.

Overall, Solaimalai Ilavarasi is still a worthwhile read. Despite its issues towards the end, it successfully holds the reader’s attention for most of the story.

I was awestruck by the plot of the story. I only read the historical fiction of Kalki's work. This short novel "Solaimalai Ilavarasi" had two stories spanning 100 years, both the stories are interconnected. The characters Ulaganatha Devar, Manickavalli, King of Solaimalai, Kumaralingam, Ponamma, and the father of Ponamma are one and the same.

Ulaganatha Devar rises up to fight the British in the 18th century and Kumaralingam is a freedom fighter in the 19th century. Ulaganatha Devar the Prince and later the King of Maranenthal country dies in the hands of the British. The same story repeats and Kumaralingam believes that the story will end like Ulaganatha Devar. Is the story ends like that?

A wonderful story, written by Kalki.

சில சொப்பனங்கள் நிஜத்தில் நடக்காதா என்றும் சில சொப்பனங்கள் பளித்துவிடக்கூடாது என்றும் நாம் என்னுவதுண்டு. ஒரே சொப்பனம் பளிக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் பளிக்க கூடாது என்றும் நம்மை மனப்போராட்டத்துக்கு இட்டுச்செல்கிறார் கல்கி. நீங்கள் கல்கியின் பரம ரசிகரென்றால் இந்த புத்தகத்தின் முதல் மூன்று பக்கங்களை புரட்டும்போதே தெரிந்திருக்கும். இந்த கதையின் நடை மோகினி தீவை போன்று இருக்கும். ஆச்சர்யக்கடலில் மூழ்கும் நம்மை கடைசியில் சோகத்தில் ஆழ்த்திவிடுகிறார்.

The highlight of the novel is its simple but elegant Tamil language. The plot has two different timelines with similar events. The theme of the story is an innocent girl falling in love with the youngster who is a freedom fighter / prince who is fighting against the British government. There is no big character development for the female protagonist and climax of the story is bland. However, considering the time period the novel is suitable for the people in early 50's.

The story plot is very old. The plot has seen & read in many movies & books. May be because of that I felt a bit boring plot initially. But the book was published in 1947. But it is clear that Kalki has been Pioneer and trend setter in reincarnation plots. our author stands out here. His descriptive writing with perfect words are as usual wonderful. The author takes the reader back and forth in time with his imagination, started well but the storyline was dragging in the middle and an unexpected sudden finish was like "what the heck". Then I googled about it and found that the author's daughter finished this book. Anyhow I liked the ride between times and the suspense.

Astounding end. I would have satisfied if the ending is success of love. But bcuz it is other way around it has got deep place to feel that painful feelingin my heart. Moreover at the end he mentioned like it was true story, I couldn't bear it on me. So nicely expressed. Hats off. 🙏🏽

The author sets high expectations by his  Ponniyin Selvan and this book couldn't justify it. So please read before reading Ponniyin selvan!!

Parallel plots with same storyline seems repetitive. And the ending is dramatic and predictable.

A blend of two stories. One in the era of independent India and other 100 years before that. The parallel stories shares a lot of similarities and moves towards a tragic end. In the way it never failed to keep the readers away. Another Kalki's marvel!

Solaimalai Ilavarasi is an average book.The ending could have been different,and also the story is like reading same incidents two times with different timelines and different characters only the ending is different ,that to not so good.
