Although I'm not sure how I feel about the two main characters, I think the author did a very good job to keep the reader wondering what was going to happen next in this story. There were some parts where it dragged a bit, and sometimes the story-line seemed to be slightly off the rails, but overall, Lloyd manages to wrap up the Victorian Villains Saga series by the end.
Hopefully, this is read in order -- very important -- because otherwise, it will seem rather odd when the other characters from the past stories come together. After all, there is some distinctly confusing stuff with the various relationships between Hamiltons and Caines, etc. Was nice to see them, and the Zephyr contingent, tie up all the loose ends.
This story is meant to be gothic, but at points, Lloyd overloads it with "gothic-ness": Phew! I have to admit to stopping at one point, and just saying, "Hey, back off with the gothic elements already!" Had a melodrama overload, and had to go watch several choice moments of Kung Fu Hustle just to purge my head and reset a little, before continuing...
Can't talk too much about the two main characters, without a lot of this getting hidden as a spoiler, so will just say that of the couples, I felt they were not as well developed. We see a lot more of the other men's villainy than we do of Conner's -- his is really in his past already, he just won't forgive himself and let go of it. I liked having the love interest be a nebulous personality and the uncertainty about her character, though I did guess before the reveal. Can I just say,
Overall, probably my least favorite in the series, but still, a very serviceable finish to the series!
