Food is the best medicine! - underlying theme of the book. The author advocated that many ailments related to gut can be treated by making a conscious change in the eating habits. And that is how it should be - a natural way rather than a doctored one.

Sometimes the clients' testimonies become repetitive - could have been easily edited at some places. The recipes mentioned could be helpful but it is a huge task in itself to arrange for so many not-so-easily-available ingredients. Still after all these efforts, these recipes and their benefits sound much more promising than those of medicines.

Key take-ways from the book:
1) Sugar helps the bad bacteria to thrive in the gut and thus cause innumerable problems
2) Having fermented foods daily is the secret of long lasting health
3) It is important to identify the trigger food for your gut and then eating consciously

BOOK REVIEW
Title: Detox Diet
Author: Shonali Sabherwal
Rating: 4/5

In Detox Diet, renowned macrobiotic nutritionist Shonali Sabherwal offers a powerful and practical guide to improving overall health by focusing on the root of many chronic issues—the gut. Written in simple and relatable language, this book helps readers understand how gut health plays a major role in digestion, immunity, skin, mental clarity, mood, and even hormonal balance.

The book begins by explaining the role of the gut microbiome—the diverse set of bacteria living in our intestines—and how poor dietary choices can lead to leaky gut, inflammation, and diseases. Shonali clearly outlines the signs of an unhealthy gut and how toxic buildup affects both the body and mind.

She introduces three stages of detox through carefully planned diets:

Fasting is another key topic in the book. The author highlights its healing benefits and connects it to various cultures, where fasting is a path to purification. This connection between culture and science makes the book relatable and grounded.

One of the strongest sections is her advice on food: eliminate dairy, tea, coffee, refined sugar, maida, and processed foods. Instead, nourish your gut with fermented foods like kanji, miso, kefir, and kombucha. She also promotes fiber-rich vegetables, sprouts, fruits, millets, nuts, seeds, legumes, and omega-3-rich fats.

With well-explained concepts and real, doable steps, Detox Diet is more than a book—it’s a lifestyle guide for anyone wanting to reset their health from the inside out.

Highly recommended for those serious about long-term wellness and healing through food.

Definitely a good book, for detox enthusiasts, especially Indian people. But theory part is, a little bit, lengthy and can irritate you.

The book is a good start for someone who is exploring diet plans using Indian authors. The reason I disliked it was because the recipes were not amongst the best I've had.

Its a good precursor to authors like Mark Sission. Although my thoughts for lifestyle diets are not yet confirmed as none have given the results promised in the introductions.
