Not to Mystify, But to ClarifyAccording to Dr. Charles C. Ryrie, the book of Revelation was not designed to confuse or mystify its readers, but to enlighten them about future events.Revelation, the only major prophetic book in the New Testament, was written by the apostle John while in exile on the island of Patmos. John was commanded by God not to seal the book (22:10), and those who read it are promised a special blessing (1:3). Apparently, therefore, the book was expected to be intelligible and helpful to those who read it.This refreshing, concise new edition, with its helpful charts and graphs, is written especially for those who want to understand what lies ahead in God's plan.Dr. Ryrie's careful attention to detail and understandable explanations will not only help to clear some of the mystery surrounding the book of Revelation, but heighten your confidence that God's victory over Satan, death, and sin is only a matter of time.'Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.'~ Revelation 1:3 NIV
Charles Caldwell Ryrie (born 1925) was a Christian writer and theologian. He graduated from Haverford College (B.A.), Dallas Theological Seminary (Th.M., Th.D.) and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland (Ph.D.). For many years he served as professor of systematic theology and dean of doctoral studies at Dallas Theological Seminary and as president and professor at Philadelphia College of Bible, now Philadelphia Biblical University. He was a premillennial dispensationalist, though irenic in his approach. He was also the editor of the popular Ryrie Study Bible.
Very concise commentary, which makes it great for getting the gist of a passage at a glance, but not that helpful when needing more detailed analysis or have a specific textual question not addressed. However, a very good commentary.
Sometimes when you read the Bible, it can be somewhat tricky to understand the meaning behind some of the passages. There are books out there that can help you understand what you are reading. One of those is for the book, Revelation. It is an Everyday Bible Commentary by Charles C. Ryrie. When you first look at this book, you will notice that there is a lot of information in it. It is a great companion when reading the book of Revelation. You will want to keep it nearby when you read passages because Revelation can be one of the trickiest books to grasp, in my opinion.
I think this is definitely a book that you will want to purchase. It has great illustrations and tables and points throughout that you will want to take notes in. I would recommend reading the beginning of the book to get a grasp for what you will be experiencing through God’s Word as well as through this book. If you’ve ever wanted to read more about Revelation and what it means, take a look at this book. It will help with any questions you have about the book as a whole.
I received this book from Moody Publishers in exchange for my review. I was not required to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.
I must say that after reading this book I know little more about Revelation than I did before I read the book. Mainly, Ryrie says this may happen or that may happen during the last days. I was disappointed with the book.
