First, I'd like to thank NetGalley for giving me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I have never read anything by this author before and I am kicking myself for that now. I have already gotten a few of his books and I plan to read those too. I love his style of writing, everything is easy to understand and follow. Which I love, I've read some other books like this that just leave me scratching my head wondering what the heck to do. You will not have that problem with this book, I promise!
I also love the variety offered in this book; brews, oils, potpourri, witches' bottles, and even incense. All with simple ingredients you can find at Wal-Mart or Kroger. Which makes it easy for someone like me with the nearest Pagan store over an hour away.
What I love most is how each of these spells pertain to a Sabbat. I've been needing something for a few Sabbats and this helps me a lot. If you are looking for new things to try on those special days of the year and want something easy to follow with lots of different information, this is for you!
I was more into Wiccan when I was younger but this book was interesting because you could find ingredients in your very own supermarket in your neighber and not look like a goober getting them. Because when I was young I would get the looks... I live in a very christian town where Wiccan Shops don't survive so this was a really good book to look through and read and next time I'll be ready! This book is going to be out to pick up on Oct 8th so get your own copy!
I was sat with a group of my Witchy friends yesterday and they were asking me if there are any new books on Sabbat practice that i would recommend. I was kindly sent this book to review and I was eager to see if it matched the quality of Michael's first book in this series (I am hoping it will be a series at least!) "Supermarket Magic". That book was a bit of a revelation as I had grown accustomed to reading many books on magick that required ridiculously named and hard to source ingredients in order to work the spell. Both of Michael's books are great in that any of the workings given i know i could definitely find what i needed in the supermarket! "Supermarket Sabbats" is a relatively easy book to read and all of the recipes and suggestions the author has given are simple to do. It will be of use to everyone in one way or another but this book is definitely aimed at the beginner due to its basic technicality. I particularly liked the summary shopping list provided at the end of each chapter outlining what potential ingredients i may want to use in my own rituals and spells that would be fitting and in keeping with the spirit of the Sabbat. You won't find a lot of history or details about each particular Sabbat but i think the author is forgiven for that given the vast number of books on Sabbats out there which can be referenced for history and mythology. The cover is wonderfully bright and inviting. I would highly recommend this book and I do hope to see another "Supermarket" book by Michael in the future.
I am really into Wiccan as you can tell by some of the other books I have reviewed. I have been studying for years. I have read many books and most of them were good for giving tips and ideas but unrealistic to be able to put into use. Finding the the things needed for the recipes and spells just wasn't going to happen where I live.
This book uses items found any many grocery stores in every city of every state. No more having to drive miles from home to find a Wiccan shop, just go to your local Publix or whatever grocery store is near you. Yes some of the items are seasonal but its better then never finding them.
The book is also written in an easy to understand language. So you can pick it up quickly and it also helps me to remember it.
Most of the recipes in this book are delicious, and easy to make. There are also recipes for potpourri, faery dust and more to be used in spells. The recipes tell you what each ingredient is useful for. Like Basil is good for prosperity and Love, Apple peel is for Love and Faery Magic, and so on.
If you have any interest in Wiccan you should grab a copy of this book.
I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com to read and review.

The book is written to follow the year of sabbats. The author includes recipes, and the energy potion is amazing. (apple, rosemary, peppermint tea, sage, and ginger). The Shepard’s pie for Imbolc sounds delicious and I cannot wait to make it.
There are many recipes for each season including potpourris, incense, oils, teas, and hot chocolate. The book is meant to be read according to the corresponding season of the year. If you follow the seasons, this would be a nice book to have.
Thank you to NetGalley and Llewellyn for allowing me an advance copy of this book. A great read with recipes for oils, incense, rituals, crafts, potpourris, potions, brews, spells, and more. The book is broken down into the 4 seasons (Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn) and each section is then broken down further by chapters. Each chapter has a theme and it may include a corresponding sabbat as well. My favorite part is at the end of each chapter there is a complete shopping list of items needed should one choose to take part in all the activities that chapter has to offer. There is also an appendix at the end for color correspondences as well as an ingredient table of correspondences. A bibliography and index is offered as well.
The book presents valuable insights, but it falls short in practical applicability and can be challenging to navigate. The author seems to have based the content solely on the inventory of their own store, overlooking the fact that other stores may not carry the same unique ingredients. It would have been beneficial to provide alternatives, rather than relying heavily on a rare herb that may be difficult for readers to source. A more inclusive approach to ingredient selection would enhance the overall utility of the book.
Thank you NetGalley and Llewellyn for the opportunity to read the ARC. I really enjoyed reading this. I liked the layout and it was fun to read through the easily obtainable ingredients. Want to check out the other works by this author
Loved this book! I had been looking for something like this and appreciated the depth of knowledge and research compiled. A note that it focuses primarily on European traditions and cultural correspondences so if you're looking for something more inclusive, this isn't it.
Supermarket Sabbats by Michael Furie will walk you through the wheel of the year, with an additional chapter dedicated to the Moon and Esbats and some suggestions on how to honour days such as St Valentine’s and Leap Day the witchy way.
In every chapter, you will find recipes for simmer pots, brews, incense, oils and meals, ideas to create witch bottles, charms and craft projects, plus rituals to celebrate each Sabbat. There are many books about the wheel of the year out there, but what makes this books so appealing to me is that while reading the list of ingredients of almost every recipe, I found myself thinking that I already had at home what was needed. Of course, the title of the book is self-explanatory: what you will find within these pages is magic accessible to everyone, even to those that don’t have a magical shop near where they live, because the ingredients used are common ones and you could easily find them in the herbs and spices aisle at your local supermarket. At the end of each chapter, you’ll find a shopping list of every ingredient or tool used for that Sabbat, making everything extremely handy and easy.
