Rate this book
FIRES DOWN THE SHENANDOAH Joanna, of Virginia Historical Romance Novel First book in Civil War Wives Series Fall, 1864 Joanna Reynold looked down her road, as she had every morning and evening for three years, praying that today Charles would return home. Her young children, Caroline and Johnny, strengthen her resolve to keep the plantation running, even after most of the slaves have run away. The family of five freed slaves are left, and she’s not sure if they stay out of love and respect, or the opportunity for a share of the profits. Then the Yankees sweep down the Shenandoah Valley, burning everything. When they leave, she watches her people being led away, tied to the wagons hauling away all her food. Defying the officer in charge has left the house standing and her and the children unharmed. Desperately, she heads to the fields to gather any food the army missed, determined to keep them safe and fed until Charles returns home. Weeks later when Charles returns, he has been so damaged by the war, she wonders how she can tend to him, the children and the plantation. Winter is on his heels, and the terrible war continues. All she has is her faith and love, and both are being tested. When the Yankees return to take over their house, it is a stronger Charles who reminds her, God has a plan. But Joanna wonders if love and faith will be enough to survive the damn Yankees.

Great civil war fiction book

This is a great fiction civil war story of families that were made to depend on each other due to circumstances. Color, education, rank in the military, social status etc. all went out the window when the need was called for, for everyone to pull their resources together. It does have a strong christian base to it. It was just a very good read and I am anxious for the next book in this series to release.

Enjoyable

A few spelling errors and at times jumped in the story. I wish there was a sequel. Mostly all tied up except what happened to Suki and Amos when they were taken away. Did Charles and Joanna bring the plantation back? What happened to the union couple? Does Deaver show up again?
