There are reasons we fear the night. He might finally be one of them. A goddess returned, a war between primal powers, and a prophecy to fulfill. That's a lot of crap to heap on anyone's plate, much less a former game programmer from Brooklyn. But that's exactly what Bill Ryder - gamer, geek, and legendary vampire - has to deal with.
Half his friends are missing and those that are left are mired in chaos. Sadly, Armageddon isn’t about to give them a breather. The White Mother, a vile evil from the distant past, is amassing her forces to exterminate all who stand in her way - be they human, vampire, or other. Bill and his buddies need to find a way to stop her, while also keeping the other supernatural factions from tearing the world asunder.
It’s finally time for Bill to master his powers, sort out his relationship woes, and figure out how to survive his date with destiny. Because if he can’t get his act together, the curtain will fall and mankind will be forever plunged into everlasting darkness.

The Last Coven is the grand finale of the bestselling Tome of Bill saga, an urban fantasy series with a nasty overbite. If you like gory fight scenes, dorky humor, and Bigfoot-sized action, then you'll love Rick Gualtieri's latest installment in this kick-butt vampire series for the 21st century adult.
Rick Gualtieri loves to write adventure, mayhem, and snarky dialogue. His bestselling Tome of Bill series combines all of this into a world of supernatural danger with hard-hitting action and plenty of sharp-tongued geeky humor.
Rick lives alone in a dark, evil place called New Jersey with only his wife, three kids, and countless pets to both keep him company and constantly plot against him. When he's not busy monkey-clicking out words, he can typically be found jealously guarding his collection of vintage Transformers from all who would seek to defile them.
Armageddon Bills way. This is a Must Read! Trying to write a review of this book without any spoilers is rough. Rick Gualtieri once again has hit a home run with this, the final book in The Tomb Of Bill series. It's not only a Great Read but will have you laughing out loud and sitting on the edge of your seat with the antics and snarky dialogue of Bill and his friends. It is a roller coaster of fun and has spills and thrills. Vampires, witches, Bigfoot and other monsters what more could you ask of Armageddon? All done Bills way It's well paced and keeps your attention and is flatly a very fun read. I received an advance copy in return for an honest review.
I received a pre-release (ARC) copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I have to say before I even really start this review that I have enjoyed this series so much that I’ve told every single one of my “reading” friends that they needed to buy a copy and dive into them. Rick Gualtieri is a mother effin genius of comedy/horror writing. I’ve never laughed so hard through a series of books about vampires in my whole life. The Last Coven was the perfect ending to this series too, although it’s just about breaking my heart to know there won’t be anymore after this about Bill the Vampire. His nerdy ways and snarky commentary made the whole thing work perfectly. And believe me when I say you wouldn’t want him any other way. I don’t like to give spoilers in my reviews because I always feel like that ruins the book for others who may want to check it out. But I will say that Mr. Gualtieri has given me a whole new appreciation for name calling. I’ve learned more new put downs that I’ve began using on others from this (and the other ones before it) book than I ever knew existed. If you’re looking for something to pass the time, these books are for you. But fair warning, once you start them it’s very hard to put them down and stop reading when real life comes knocking on your door. Every time I got interrupted I wanted to scream at people to shut up so I could read. And every time that I had to put it down to go do something else, I was wondering and guessing at what would happen next. One of my favorite characters of the series was Sally. She is a hoot. And every snide comment she makes to Bill makes me just want to be standing behind her going, “Yeah Bill….you deserve every word of that! Now slap him into next week for being an idiot Sally!” And Gansetseng….how can you not lover her! As much as an annoyance as she is to Bill, she pulled his bacon out of the fire so many times that the reader starts thinking, “OK Gan get in here and save the day again. Or night whichever the case might be.” Thank you Rick for letting me go along for the ride. I’ve enjoyed these characters and this world you created so much. I hate to see it end! But man what an ending. But these books people, you won’t regret it.
I have been anticipating this day with bated breath, what dose it mean for Bill Ryder, the legendary geek.....I mean Freewill. The odd hero of the Tome of Bill saga.
Here is the disclaimer : I received a free prerelease copy of this book, but fear not I would gladly dropped a single star on this book if it was an a front to my senses!
Now that that's out of the way... cough... we're was I, oh yes. For those of you new to the Tome of Bill, this series is seriously sardonic and a load of fun! If Napoleon Dynamite, Bill Murray has a love child in den of Vampire's while on the Nerdist, while Buffy slade vamp that even thought of glittering you would get something cool, but not as cool as this series do your self a favor and read "Bill the Vampire" check out his Face Book page... Bill the Vampire's of Rick Gaulteiri and you'll understand the strong following attached to this series.
On to the matter at hand "The Last Coven" the final installment (unless we hound the author relentlessly as I plan to do, there is always hope, they killed Sherlock Homes and Shot Montgomery Burns) we get answers to many questions we have speculated about through out the series. I am man enough to say I had some dust in my eye at one or two points in the book.
It almost goes with out saying that if you filled the serries you will love this book. Rick has evolved as a writer and the series got better and better ending in a crescendo and although it is over I for one am up for a re-read and or listen on Audible.
THE LAST COVEN wraps up the Tome of Bill series (though new books are promised for 2019). After eight books, there is an exciting conclusion that answers all the questions and gives a definitive ending that almost seems a shame to do. Truth be told, the Bill series was always at its best when it wasn't about epic battles between good vs. evil but an obnoxious geek adjusting to life as a vampire. I have to say it was still exciting and the storylines are all wrapped up. If you've read up to this book, you've probably got all the motivation you need to finish it off. I like the ending is more than a little bittersweet. Too many books have endings which are all happiness and light without the sacrifice of good or well-liked characters. It's harsh but benefits the story tremendously. I particularly liked the epilogue as well as where all the relationships ended up.
Despite a few points where I wasn't sure I could take much more for Bill, the last book tied up lots of loose ends and had a surprisingly fitting ending that I wasn't expecting but liked.
A labour of love at times, this series is full of action, drama, wisecracks and swearing and unforgettable characters.
Having finally read through all eight books of the Tome of Bill series, I think I can finally put my thoughts on the series to rest and drive the final nail into its coffin.
So if there's one thing I can say right off it's that Gualtieri knows how to set the scene. Each of the early books add to the mythos and world of Bill in creative and different ways and for the most part its fun and interesting. The main characters are a mixed bag of personalities ranging from engaging to window dressing. Sally was by far the most interesting to me even though so little is revealed about her character. I think it was her interactions with Bill that helped. Bill is the quintessential smartarse and having Sally around to balance him out gave a nice contrast and evolution in both their characters.
If there's one thing that Gualtieri needs to work on its closing his work. Around book 6 the series starting running out of momentum. So Gualtieri does the time disgraced tradition of throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. Book 6 introduces a race of Body Snatcheresque rock monsters with no foreshadowing and no connection to the plot up to that point. It all just smacked of desperation and while I continued reading, I felt the series was weaker for it. Book 7 is where I thought things really went off the rails, with the plot playing out like a video game. Go here, kill sub-boss. Level 2, kill sub-boss. Final level, final boss.
Also while fight scenes are definitely in Gualtieri's wheelhouse I got the impression that after a while fight scenes became code for: I dunno what else to do, so filler! After all the fight scenes just blended together to the point where while I can remember the final fight in Book 1, I can't remember anything about the fights in Books 6-8.
Also minor characters. Gualtieri needs to work developing minor characters. So many inconsequential characters die throughout this series and none of it felt organic. We're barely given enough to get an indication of who they are before they're knocked off and I felt nothing towards any of them. Book 7 is a repeat offender here with Bill's D&D group getting vamped and dying one by one through the book. And not a single fuck was given.
But my biggest criticisms are for the ending. In his afterword Gualtieri uses that chestnut 'this is the way the world ends, not with a bang but a…'. For me, not with a bang but the sound of the air being let out of a balloon. So much buildup, climax after climax, bigger threat after bigger threat and then phhhbbbbbbttttppppp………pppppp. It was as though Gualtieri was afraid to end the series or leave it open for a sequel, because so much of the epilogue feels limpwristed. Its especially silly when a character who should've been dead pops up alive and well because…reasons.
Here's the thing. I enjoyed the Tome of Bill. Its one of the better series I've read recently but I'm not blind to its faults. And while I am interested to see what Gualtieri goes into next, I also hope he improves his craft. Because I think the biggest failing an artist of any medium can do is thrive on the idea of: that's good enough.
Talk about going out with a bang! The fights just never stopped in this final book. I was sorry to reach the end, it was a wild, funny, snarky ride. Can I just say I loved James, and...*clutching chest*...! I did not see that twist at the end, and as for Gan - what is with that little chick? She is some scary sheila! Another three years...poor old Bill... I'm sad to say goodbye to such an awesome series, but so glad to have found it!
Mr. Gualtieri has set the bar very high for himself. The Last Coven is the conclusion to his phenomenal series, The Tome of Bill. I can't wait to see what he shares with us next because this series was amazing! From start to finish ToB has been wacky, thrilling, horrifying and yes even touching.
The final book is a beast, and rightfully so. Bill and co. face their destiny. Will they save the world or will be responsible for the end? Read the book and find out!
The writing was exceptional, as always. Readers will find themselves completely immersed in the book. There weren't any loose ends. We see everyone and are given satisfying answers for each character. You're going to laugh, cry and fear for the characters. Personally, I was laughing and crying at the same time leaving my loved ones questioning my sanity.
Parting is such sweet sorrow! The ending was absolutely perfect! When you see how things end you will notice how everything fell perfectly into place. One could even guess how things would end because the evidence has been with us all along.
I finished the book two days ago but I held off on writing my review since I didn't want it to be overly negative based on my opinion of the ending. I think I've cooled off so here goes nothing!
I have to say I loved almost the entire book. The pacing, the tension, the action, the jokes and even the dialogue between Bill, Sally and Sheila. The one thing that really put me off was the ending.
All my flailing about ships aside, The Last Coven was a great final entry in what has been one of the most entertaining series I've had the pleasure of reading. I cannot wait to see what Rick Gualtieri has in store for us next!
The final installment of the Tome of Bill series does not disappoint! Bill and his friends take you on an epic adventure battling vampires, the Feet, witches, and even a couple of gods, while trying to stave off Armageddon. This book is full of heart and snark. You will laugh out loud, and you may even find yourself shedding a few tears. THIS IS HOW YOU END A SERIES!!! Rick Gualtieri has truly outdone himself. Why are you still reading this review?!! Go grab this book and dig in!
** I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.**
In keeping with the tradition of the other books it was very entertaining. Everything from the Mighty Cunt to the terrible one liners that always made me laugh. The ending wasn't what I had hoped for but then again I wasn't really sure I wanted it to end. Either way it was a good ride for the nerd turned Freewill.
An exciting 5-star explosion of fireworks, emotion and so much more to "finish" off this magnificent series! (I put finish in the quotey things because I still want to read all the 'fractionally' numbered bits, too) What Rick Gualtieri did with so many players in this overwhelmingly enjoyable series was not only incredibly unique and inventive but outright thrilling in terms of the sheer fun I had along the way! Oh and funny, too. Don't forget the funny bits (bitch)!
WARNING: if you don't like spoilers, stop reading here because I think I'm probably going to have to let a few drop.
OK, this book PER SE started off kind of slow - which to be fair has been sort of the standard modus operandi for this series since about the time we hit the halfway mark. As with pretty much ALL fantasy, urban or otherwise (and in my limited experience I guess I should add), the crew has to do a bit of gathering, be it with the magi and/or the vampires and/or the smelly shit beasts of Canada, etc. Along with this there has to be a great bit of travelling and then scheming, fighting some minor battles, having some major breakthroughs and breakdowns and pretty much getting the game board set up for what's to come (or as Peter Jackson would call it - the first 9 or so hours of the collector's edition DVD). It's not boring, don't get me wrong but its not the big bam, wam, pow, and whoosh of the latter part of the story where all the good concludey bits come into play.
Speaking of which: that ending, well, wow. In all honesty I didn't really think Gualtieri would be able to pull together so many of the story-lines that were still dangling or even flapping around in the maelstrom like that ... but damn if he didn't wrap them up with aplomb! Sure there's the natural "oh man, what a gip" kind of reaction to having such a sweeping story end the way it did - or did it? - or as fast as it seemed after I was finished - or was it? (oh shut up!!!) - but you've got to respect an author that has his plan laid out and sticks to his guns even to the bitter end. Now sure, we get the faintest bit of a teaser during the 'Hate Mail' epilogue (his words, not mine) that's going to provide some hellacious stuff to latch onto in the coming Bill books, but hey, why not? Nothing came about in those final paragraphs that changed anything much and we were witness to enough throughout the story to not really doubt that it happened at all! So, um, yeah! That stuff!
I think though if I had anything to kind of, I dunno, grumble about - and this is also a fault I often find with fantasy books vs. say scifi or horror or scifi/horror/fantasy - is that the story-line does stay awfully focused on those characters that are being created for this story and nothing beyond that. I mean, the world is exploding and/or dying and/or being turned into trees and we see nary a reaction from the general public. OK, White Mother, yeah sure, but what about the White House? Sure, I kind of like seeing Boston get kablooeyed from here to kingdomcome but NYC? No way, there'd be far too much hell to pay. But I guess when you get so far into PURE fictional fantasy - or fantastical fiction, your call - something has to give.
I will conclude thusly and very succinctly (unlike most of my reviews) - this series was awesome! Make it part of your collection, too! NOW READERS, I COMPEL THEE! Ciao.
The Last Coven written by Rick Gualtieri & narrated by Christopher John Fetherolf. You know the villain must be something terrible when she’s the main concern over Alexander the Great! There is trouble coming from every direction in this book. Ed is missing, Tom is having a weird issue with his body, Sally just got back to reality, Gan is Gan, & Sheila and Bill must fulfill the prophecy. Bill the legendary freewill came to an agreement with his dark side and it’s time to put that power to the test. Sad to say it’s the end of this saga but it will go out with a bang.
What are some things that I’ve enjoyed about this book? I really enjoyed the action in this book, we got to witness all the top dogs going all out. I finally got what I was waiting on Bill coming to an agreement with his dark side. Gan really lived up to who she made herself out to be, the adopted daughter of a conqueror. Bill came a long way from the first book, he’s really matured, and I couldn’t see this story being made with anyone other that Bill Ryder.
What are some things that I didn’t enjoy about this book? I think this book was rushed because a lot of things just happened without much reason. I personally didn’t enjoy the ending, sure some of it I was happy to hear but it couldn’t have been better. For such a powerful villain I feel like The White Mother/IB was just killed too easily to be the original. I feel like it was the same amount of effort put into killing the Destroyer. I’m sorry for this spoiler but how does it go from book 7 Sally having strong feeling for Bill while they were trying to break her out of being compelled, Sally having sex with evil Bill after beating Turd, to the end Sally saying I think I’m going to get with Ed now. I really expected her and Bill to end up together after all of the build up between them.
This is the final book in the Tome of Bill series written by Rick Gualtieri. I thoroughly enjoyed the series; I believe it took me two weeks to complete all eight books. The narrator did a really good job can’t imagine Bill having another voice actor. My only gripe with the narrator was the way he pronounced a few things. I fell as though the books weren’t listened to before they finished the project. I purchased the books via a bundle I have enjoyed reviewing these books I would definitely recommend them.
This book brings about the conclusion to one of my favorite book series from one of my favorite authors. This journey has been a tremendous amount of fun and the culminating book that is The Last Coven was a fantastic conclusion.
For those who have read the series, you know just what to expect from this entry. Bringing me back to my high school days of playing DnD with friends, this book tied up all of the loose ends from the first seven (10 if you include the three .5 entries) books. Bill comes to terms with Dr. Death, Sheila and Bill work towards their specific roles in the prophecy, Sally is Sally, and Gan continues to obsess over Bill.
The battle scenes described throughout the book reminded me of scenes I encountered in Diablo 2/3. I could easily picture mages and other creatures fighting during a “dungeon crawl” as being acted out within each game.
We got to witness some references to ancient gods in this book which made me nostalgic for authors like Lovecraft. We also became, if not already so, intimately familiar with the descriptive scent of Grolg, The Big C, and Turd.
The only question I have? Why didn’t Bill start off a chain reaction with the Johabich by repeatedly yelling “mother”? What better way to distract them?
Rick really has outdone himself with this entry and re-affirmed why he is and will remain one of my top 5 favorite authors. Well done, good sir. Well done indeed. For Team TW!
I was given an ARC copy of this book, and on my first read of it, I probably would have given it 3 stars. I decided, however, to wait and re-read it later so it could be fresh again and see what changes were implemented. I'm glad I re-read it, because anything from the ARC copy that I would have had a complaint about was fixed.
This was a beautiful last story that probably ends on a heavier note that you are expecting from The Tome of Bill. However, I was extraordinarily pleased with this ending. It left a little bit open, while tying up all loose ends. It made the fight plausible. It made everyone doing the right thing to allow them to make mistakes, to feel the emotions about it. This was a fantastic ending to a series that is rarely seen. Most series build up to something and you feel hollow when it ends. This series feels 100% complete and plausible considering the characters. Obviously, the ending to this series was never my problem in the ARC copy either, it was that some detail was a bit too much, and he fixed that. It's quick paced, while still longer than his usuals, but it give everyone their chance to shine, no matter how it ends up for them in the end.
Sniff . . . I just finished the final book in the Tome of Bill series. I’m usually not big on books that are part of a series, as so many authors tend to lose their edge after three or four books. Not Rick Gualtieri. He kept me laughing all the way to the end. The Last Coven will answer all your questions (even some you didn’t think you had), and the ending will surprise you.
an important note is that this rating is based on the entire 8 book series being available for context.
While there are more books in this universe this is the end of this series and I must say I think it ended pretty well. There's still a lot of the " locker room humor" that would take me out of certain scenes ( no I don't just mean the crass humor but a very specific version of it ) however being that we've been with these characters for a while it did feel more like personalities rather than injected for a cheap laugh.
We have great action and more insight into the world that was built, as well as the wrap up of a lot of threads to the point where certain insights are gleaned to give aha moments.
Overall this was a fun adventure, and the final book was well written, even with the friends that were done dirty throughout and at the end.
Fantastic series great characters a whole lot of crazy funny smart ass nerds actually kicking ass now and then yea but mostly getting there ass kicked but never giving up great story and a great ending, and the sign of a truly great Author at the very end throwing in the final twist you never see coming. Thanks for the ride Rick.

It took me a while to finish this series, not that it isn't wonderful, just that sometimes life gets in the way of my reading. I loved the way everything was resolved, now I need a where are they now version of the story. The last chapter gave a little bit of that, but now that I'm invested in these characters, I want MORE! LOL
The author did a great job keeping the story moving and the characters didn't change themselves. They grew (as any good character should) but the little nuances that made them unique were still there and I love that!
The very short version: -writing: 4 stars -story: 4 stars -characters: 4 stars -accessibility: 3 stars -setting: 4 stars -metaphysics/magic: 4.5 stars
Bill the Vampire has come a long way and manages to continue with everything you have come to expect from the series. A mix of earnestness, crude humor, heavy nerd references and a surprising amount of heart.
Gualtieri manages the very tough job of pulling together a great many loose threads and tying them off neatly without being too heavy-handed. This isn't my favorite series in the genre but it is definitely a fun ride and worth the time.
A glorious end to a series! The storyline wraps up nicely, while leaving the characters open to further adventures. Near constant action, and surprises keep you hooked till the very end. Bill as always the reluctant hero, with something snarky to say at every turn is forever entertaining. His friends and their wellbeing hold him together and drive him to his fated destination. Mr. Gaultieri's writing draws one in and keeps you hanging on; very enjoyable indeed!
What can I say to do this series justice, the best I can offer you is read and go on the ride of your life. Hang on to Bill's coattails and stare in awe at his downfalls and triumphs. A cast of characters of immense evil, and men and women of great good and fortitude. Then there is Bill gamer, geek, vampire, nerd, and all round good guy. An ordinary guy turned into something extraordinary. Fab.
I enjoyed this entire series so much that, even though I'm suffering from a horrible case of bronchitis and my head feels like the Alma are using it for batting practice, I still read the entire series in about 4 days. Now I'm off to read the Bill of the Dead series...and any other books this author has written. The dialogue had me laughing out loud and the action had me on the edge of my seat. Pretty awesome series!
When you reach the end of a series there's always a serious worry about how it will end and how much you will hate it. Thankfully, that didn't happen here! I really liked the way everything was wrapped up and the little bit that is still left hanging there. Well done Mr. Gualtieri, that's not an easy feat!
I actually skipped the 7th book because I was getting fed up with the lack of character development in this series. What an excellent choice! I barely felt like I missed anything and was happy just to quickly finish this monstrosity off as the characters still don't develop. Overall, a good finish to the series, but ugh, learn how to make characters grow Gualtieri!
4.5 Great ending to this series and I really enjoyed it. I had to take a break in the middle of the series as it was a little to much but when I picked it back up on book 4 I continued to the end. The full series is a easy 4 to 4.5 stars. Loved the MC and supporting characters, and the ending was also good. Great way to end a series and I will have to look for more from this author.
Ripped through the whole lot by reading the first and last chapters. Have to give credit to any author for such a large series but the whole thing felt a little bland with little character development and relationship building that kept getting turned on its head over and over again. Still kept me busy for a week.
It is so rare to finish a long series and think... wow. That was really good. Rick was able to bring to a close this amazing story and provide solid endings for all the main characters. This series is one that is so entertaining that each book left you wanting more. With The Last Coven you feel ok if that's it.
You won't be disappointed. You know the saying "save the best for last"? Well that's what you have in this Tome of Bill finale. Great humor, adventure, an epic battle, and finally closure.
