When the comment is made that "people have been predicting the "end" since the beginning of time", I think back to the arguments that Dr Swenson makes here. It truly IS a different age now and the evidence is startling

Fascinating to read 20 years after it was written and most of his predictions have come true to some degree. Enjoyed the practical challenge at the end to invest in authentic relationships.

Author brings up several interesting ideas intended to show that we are most likely living in the end times. However, the topic itself is lacking of solid 'evidence' to back up the arguments he presents. Much of it is estimation and conjecture. One idea I did like near the end has to do with the profusion and exponential growth of falleness as a byproduct of 'development'. As progress continues, the ability of rogue nations and people to destroy everything with the push of a button also grows. This danger is unavoidable in the long-term and will ultimately lead to millions of deaths. Instead of fretting, it's time to live with purpose and get your spirit prepared for whatever the world throws its way.

Swenson's argument for the end of the age is one that everyone should consider seriously. There are also a number of very good references cited in the book that can be consulted to bolster his argument as well. Unfortunately, there is very little we can do to prevent the catastrophic events that will occur due to the exponentially increasing evil in the world. It was also very wise of Swenson not to try to predict when the end of the age would occur. In stark contrast, the last chapter does try to provide hope in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Maybe it is too much to ask, but it would have been helpful if Swenson had written a chapter or two on how survivors should deal with the suffering associated with these lethal events. Perhaps he thinks that all Christians would be spared?

Nice to read a book about the coming end of civilization that does not start out by screaming REPENT ALL YOU SINNERS!

Swenson takes an interesting look at the exponential rate of progress in our society. The profusion of "more". From there he shows that sooner or later, something really big and really bad just has to happen. Not because progress is evil but because the statistical odds of a cataclysmic bad event occurring increase along with all the good advances we see. No real message not predictions of the end date. Just a good read to set your mind to thinking that He could be coming like a thief in the night at just about anytime.

I highly recommend this book. It is an “easy” read that makes complete sense as it challenges Christians to live in light of the end of the age. A must read for all true believers.

Written around 2000, this book reads like prophecy. Brilliant, enthralling and a page-turner.
