Dangerous. Wrong. She could be so close to finding out who I really am, and I don’t want to think about how badly that could damage her. If I have any conscience, I’ll turn and run. But I can’t let her go.

Presley Hale has no idea the guy she just told off in the school parking lot died in a drowning accident four months ago. Why would she? It’s not like she knows she can see the dead. Stunned by Presley’s sixth sense, Landon Blackwood rethinks his planned departure and begins tracking her to find answers to their mysterious connection.

Every so often you come across a book that hooks you from page one and doesn't let you go. Beyond is that kind of book. It's clean steam with a paranormal twist that will keep you turning pages far past bedtime.

The authors have written characters that are real and relatable, and I truly enjoyed getting to “know” them. The descriptions of everything from the scenery to the curliness of a character’s hair are beautiful and vivid. I could see the different settings in my mind (I may want to move to Truckee now), and I had no problem imagining what the characters look like. There were passages in the book that were so beautifully written that I had to stop and read them again because I wanted to savor them. The romance is breathtaking, too. The connection between Landon and Presley is electric, and I was absolutely engrossed. The story was exciting and intense, and I couldn’t wait to see how things would play out. And that ending – swoon!

I definitely look forward to reading more from these authors in the future! They have undeniable talent. Do yourself a favor and purchase a copy of Beyond. You won't regret it.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Beyond is different than any book I have read. I didn’t think the ending would be like it was either. That ending blew me away!

From the beginning of the book, I was hooked. There were simple phrases that would grab you and you would wonder why they put that there and what does it mean? And after each sentence was more things that I had questions for. I had to keep reading, I had to know more!

Once Landon realizes that Presley the new girl can see him, a boy 5 months dead, he needs to know why. Then he kind of observes her. Then he starts to fall for her! He knows that isn’t possible but it happens all the same. Landon hasn’t moved on. He watches his family and sees that his twin sister, VIolet isn’t doing well with his loss.

Landon’s cousin Reese notices Presley too. And there is a connection between them. For awhile, Presley sees Landon but only knows him as Krew. She doesn’t realize he is dead. As the reader, we see how this is going to go when she figures things out! But Presley is falling for him so why would she think anything is wrong with their relationship besides no kisses and no texts or phone calls. He gives little lies about those to not make her upset about it.

Meanwhile, Landon needs to move on. He has a guide; James. James tells him about the Vigilum. They are those who are dark who can’t move on and who are looking for passage to move on. Passage that they try to take from the newly departed so they can move on and take that person's own ability to move on. They are dark and in my opinion evil. They are watching Landon and finding his weaknesses to find a way to get his passage. They find the weaknesses in Reese for wanting Presley, Violet for her not moving on with the living, and in Presley because Landon loves her. And they are very creative in making problems so they can get his passage. Liam is the head one and he is evil and determined!

Landon and Presley learn later why she can see the dead. That is a crucial change in the story at that point. Presley and Landon learn something else that may change the course of moving on for both of them, which may be far more worse for all.

I loved their chemistry and although once you're dead you are dead, I still had hope! I loved how Presley loved her autistic brother and that she was his main care giver. Presley’s new friends at school also accepted him. Presley’s mother, who is the principal, wasn’t very good with him.

The story is believable. I ate it up quickly but I wanted more to the story. There were still questions unanswered. There are questions at the end of the book to ponder on, which I did! I look forward to reading more from these authors! And now that I know there will be a sequel, I can get those unanswered questions!

Oh and trust me, my review gives absolutely no hint at how it ends, and it is a very different ending than I have ever read before. SO don’t think you know how it ends. Because I can guarantee you don’t know until you read it for yourself.

If you like the movie Ghost, skiing, Olympics, piano, good vs evil, a twist in a story, a different kind of story, doing whatever it takes to be with the one you want, autism, then this might be for you!

What a whirlwind! I love getting sucked into a book so much that I can't put it down all day! ;) These ladies have such a way with words! The characters and setting came alive through their descriptions and details. I am not typically drawn to paranormal stories, but I was drawn into this one right away by the unique concept and captivating connection between Presley and Landon. I loved the many references to making choices and the importance of progression through those choices. I loved Chase and the sweet relationship between him and Presley. The protective instinct she had for him as well as the welcoming and inclusion from her new friends for him really touched my heart. I also felt for the pain and struggle she endured in her family dynamic and the heavy burden she carried a lot. She missed out on so much and had to mature quickly which I think prepared her for Landon and allowed them to connect as deeply as they did. All that being said, I felt there was such a build up to the conflict and then it came and went so abruptly. And the conclusion was what I hoped for, but it felt almost too perfect and came on so fast that I was left with questions. I needed and wanted more! :) I think this book will be well-loved by many and will resonate particularly with the YA crowd. It's refreshing to find books like this that are clean but don't skimp on the chemistry or quality of writing. I look forward to more from these authors!

Okay, this is a book I have had the hardest time to give a review so far. But here goes...

LIKES:

* This is a fast read and really chick flick YA book.

*I liked the setting of Truckee and all the other beautiful sceneries they “painted” in this book. Especially the beach. I could almost hear the waves.

* I like Presley’s friends. The fact that they fellowshipped a bullied student is amazing to me. I loved them even more after the fact that they were so kind to her brother, Chase, who has autism. They seem to be really good friends to be with, disregarding Resee’s pranks and stunts.

*I like the inclusion of a life with a loved one with autism. It’s an eye-opener. I loved how Presley genuinely loves her brother.

* I like the connection between Presley and Landon, and the contrast of their family relationships. I like that it is a page turner.

* Despite his tantrums (hehe), I liked Reese for Presley as well. I bet they would have clicked if she didn’t see Landon.

* I like James. He has great patience.

DISLIKES:

* Of course Landon had to be a jack of all trades. YA books always have characters with perfect talents, faces, and physical features. Landon has them all, obviously.

* Several parts reminded me of Twilight which kind of threw me off a bit.

* I didn’t like the parts/phrases that were a little too cheesy for my taste.

* I didn’t like Presley’s viewpoint of her mom (I feel like her mom, though should have been more responsible, was really trying as a single mom and she deserved a little more compassion). Moreover, I didn’t like how it SOMETIMES seemed like she was more obsessed with Landon than in love. He was right that she was forsaking “alive” relationships. I can’t believe she left Violet with Chase during a disaster at the concessions to flirt! I seriously did not like Presley going into that room and touching things that shouldn’t have been touched. I didn’t like her even more in that part. Her thoughts about Landon when Violet confided in her that she might be forgetting her brother (p.160) was one thing (though it also annoyed me because she sounded like she thinks she knows Landon more than his family, but that’s just how I took it. My reception and opinion), but going in his room was crossing the line. I was fuming. She’s so lucky to have a friend as forgiving as Violet. I liked Presley a lot, though, at the beginning of the book. So tough and strong, yet gentle and loving towards Chase.

* I’m not a big fan of the ending. But that’s what a sequel is for. Hahaha!

RANDOM BITS:

The fight towards the end was kind of expected. I didn’t even read reviews, yet I saw that coming ever since the Vigilums were introduced. They also remind me of a combination of the Nazguls + Dementors + The Volturi. I am not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. Oh and Liam’s legilimency skills (p. 113).

In addition, I was also a bit confused as to why Landon never thought James was also Liam’s guide (p. 245) since Liam mentioned (also p. 113), “Looks like I won’t be the only F on your report card.” When I read that, I immediately understood James was his guide, too. And English is my second language.

Also, I was left questioning this: if they were all to eventually move on by choice or by force as James explained to Landon, how was he was able to stay without becoming a Vigilum? How do they become guides?

I am not sure, but I think there are some typos that were missed which happens. For example, page 101, “I’d rather eat five pounds of toenails THAT admit I was daydreaming about you.” Was that supposed to be “than” instead of that? And on page 104, “So do you I have to call you Captain?” I guess they forgot to remove the first “you.” Lastly, page 209, “I cared for more than myself” (4th paragraph). Was that supposed to be “I cared for [her/Presley] more than myself”... ? I don’t know, but these are just things I thought went overlooked. Maybe?

Overall, it was still a good read especially for teenagers. I love that it’s clean romance. This is my first paranormal romance book and I’d say it was a good experience despite the weird stuff (i.e. time travel? Being able to touch a ghost? - although the explanation makes sense to me, it’s still weird; and the weird ending).

I really enjoyed this book. Beyond reads quickly, with a very entertaining plot and very likable characters. Presley is a great character. I loved her relationship with Chase, it was very sweet. Being his caregiver was hard, but she did it well. I loved the story line and where the authors took it. I enjoyed the POV switches between Landon and Presley. The climax was entertaining and heart-pounding, but I felt it we could have used a little more on the Vigilum. I know the story was about Landon and Presley, but I enjoyed the idea of the Vigilum and wanted to see them more. The ending did seem a bit rushed. That being said, the book was entertaining and I felt satisfied at the end. I was not able to guess where it would go or how it would end! I honestly could have gone either way. (I know that doesn't make sense, but you will have to read it to see why!)

5 out of 5 stars. A great book from two promising authors. I can't wait to see what is next for them!

Writing BEYOND with my co-author and sister, Catina was one of the best experiences of my life. I'm a huge fan of Stephenie Meyer, Kasie West, Amy Harmon and Ally Condie. If you like these authors, you'll probably love the clean steam and fast paced elements of BEYOND. Catina and I are hard at work on the sequel to BEYOND which releases in 2018. We love to hear from our readers, so leave us a note! Thanks for reading, friends.

3.5, rounding up

I haven't read a good paranormal/supernatural type romance in a bit so this book felt fresh and new to me. I loved the mountain setting of Truckee, Nevada. I drive through Truckee all the time on my way to California. It's a beast of a place in the winter!! You sure don't get many books set there but I loved it!

The characters in this book were good. I liked them and the way they all connected to each other. Presley has the weight of the world on her shoulders with a special needs sibling that is mostly her responsibility, moving to a new school only to be bullied and having an absentee father. Presley has a serious disposition to go along with her tremendous responsibility.

I felt that the relationship between Presley and Landon progressed naturally and easily. I enjoyed their interactions. The story definitely kept me interested because I honestly wasn't sure how things were going to end. The build up to the end was fantastic.

The ending left me confused though. I didn't love it. After this huge build up with the Vigilum, I guess I was expecting a bit more. It felt rushed. I can't say too much without giving things away but the place and time where Presley and Landon ended left me with so many questions. It didn't really resolve the "how" of things and I was frustrated by it.

Other than that, I really enjoyed this book. These authors show a lot of promise and I'll be watching to see what comes next from them.

Content: bulling, some kissing

Beyond was a great read! I'm not sure if knowing one of the authors made me biased, but the characters were clever and funny and believable! (which they sometimes really aren't.) I heard Angela's voice saying the character's lines multiple times and it just made me laugh because it's exactly how she would say it. It read like a fairly classic clean teen romance, but the chapters are written from 3 or 4 of the main character's perspectives, which I liked a lot because you get to know them on a more honest and intimate level. I felt it made them more dimensional than the traditional single-perspective plot that you typically get. The characters are complex and varied- like real people tend to be. They make mistakes and have "foot-in-mouth" moments which make them relatable, but they're also brave and tender, which endear them to you. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style of these first time authors and look forward to the sequels.

I was chosen as an advanced reader and am so glad I was. This book was phenomenal. The authors did such an amazing job of painting such vivid pictures and descriptions of the setting and characters. I fell in love with ALL of them. The characters were so real and flawed which made them so lovable. I was thinking about them for days after I finished the book. I definitely want to read more of their story. It had so many layers to it, not just romance. The paranormal aspect to the book was really well done, and again the images created by the authors brought this book to life. Of course the romantic side of the story was incredibly well written. It was perfect and clean, but absolutely drew you in and left you wanting more. I would read book this over and over and DEFINITELY recommend it to everyone. I really hope there is more to follow!!

What a quick, engrossing read! I love novels that I can just get sucked into, and this is definitely one of them. I liked the premise of the book and the many different themes it explores--life, death, love, difficult choices we must make, complicated family relationships, and more. I enjoyed reading from different characters' points of views and felt that that allowed me to know the characters on a deeper level. However, I felt like Landon's and Presley's relationship was a little rushed not as intimate and genuine as Presley's relationship with Reese; so I didn't find myself particularly rooting for Presley/Landon and instead felt a deeper connection with the Presley/Reese relationship. However, I was left with many questions at the end and might be able to change my mind ;) Looking forward to the sequel!

I started this book while waiting for my family to get into town. Late nights + vigilums = creepy vibes and unknown noises and being creeped out but in a good way. I couldn't put the book down and finally did 33 chapters in. I devoured the rest of the book this morning and I'm desperately hoping there is more to Landon and Presley's story. This book will leave me wanting for more for a very long time.

There’s so much to love about this book! With a paranormal aspect filled with its own fascinating mythology, a main character in a refreshingly a non-standard role, an ending I couldn’t guess, well chosen, vivid settings that made the story come alive, all packed with mystery and new love and heartbreakingly tough choices, this is a story that will hook you from the start.

This was a book I purchased for a teenage friend and my daughter who teaches 5th grade. Both of them loved the book. The teenager is recommending to her friends and my daughter was delighted to have a great story to add to her classroom bookshelf and recommended it to her teaching partners in 6th-8th grade. I also found the book to be a quick read and wanted to know what happened next.

Totally intriguing. Took me right back to my high school days in the first few pages. Such an easy yet can't-put-it-down read!
This was honestly the only book I've ever read that I've chosen to reread the day after I finished it. I felt so sad the book was over.
Sequel PLEASE Catina.

“Presley?” I smiled and held out a sob. “ I didn’t let go, Landon. I held on just like you told me to.” At last his face turned into a smile. “I wont let go either.” This was my very first audio book that I finished and LOVED. I was a little nervous with it being a YA fiction with some paranormal influence, since that isn’t usually my go to. But I was blown away with how much I loved this story. I felt deeply for the characters, I looked forward to listening, and I even caught myself yearning for more.
Catina Haverlock and Angela Larkin know how to write a story. It was captivating and beautiful. The descriptions were well written, the story was unique and the character development was wonderful. I felt everything these characters felt and can’t wait to listen to the sequel!

This story is of a girl, Presley, who moves into a new town as her last bit of time in high school. With her younger brother and mom to care for, she tries to fit in, and learns of the sadness looming around the school when a boy passed away five months prior by a freak accident. What she doesn’t know, is the first day of school, she sees him, not knowing who he is, and later discovers she can see beyond the grave. As Landon realizes she can actually see him, he gravitates towards her seeking answers. Only to discover the yearning they have for each other. The choice is impossible. She can see ghosts, but no one else can, and she’s in love with one, who cannot truly have all of her. Will they let each other go, knowing it’s impossible? Or try to defy all odds of matter and adversity to be together?

Authors Catina Haverlock and Angela Larkin have come together and written an intriguing and interesting paranormal fantasy young adult novel that will hook readers from page one. One strong theme is the struggle of dealing with the death of a family member; of the loss and pain that goes along with this. It is also brings to life a world with two dimensions as a “dead” person and a “living” person form a unique relationship and the dangers that brings. The relationship between this couple progresses naturally and is extremely fascinating. This is a fun, interesting, and captivating read that teens will thoroughly enjoy.

My sister-in-law handed this book to me to read on our recent vacation because her daughter-in-law knew one of the authors. The blurb intrigued me, so I took on the challenge to read it in between hikes over three days and it didn't disappoint. Presley Hale is having a rough time adjusting to her senior year at a new high school in Lake Tahoe with her principal mother and autistic brother. When she has a stare off in the school parking lot after her car has been damaged by a prank, it starts an unusual journey - to bring Landon Blackwood back from the dead.

Clean, realistic view of the difficulties of high school and living with someone with autism. Even though the premise of being able to talk to and see the dead is a bit unusual, the storyline makes it believable. Well done.

I really enjoyed reading this book! I stayed up way too late to finish it. Although it had the predictability of a romance in parts (as it should), I liked the intriguing twists that made you wonder if your predictions were right. I'm not sure how I feel about how/where the book ended but that could change depending on if there is a sequel in the future. There were a couple points I felt the story jumped in time when I wanted a smoother transition. Overall a wonderfully written clean romance you can fall in love with and read over again. Can't wait to see what comes next from these beautiful authors.

The story in Beyond goes back and forth between the points of view of a few of the characters and the narrative is nicely descriptive, but not cumbersome. The inclusion of a character with autism, the main character Presley’s younger brother Chase, is a good discussion point for how to kindly treat people with disabilities and you may find yourself having to choose sides between two love interests for Presley. Easy, enjoyable read with a cliff-hanger ending – don’t worry though, a sequel is slated for 2018!

I am a new reader in this genre. A few of my friends recommended the book. I could not put the book down once I started and I found myself thinking about the book and the characters throughout my day. The writing is so crisp and descriptive which made me feel like I knew the characters inside and out. The character development was very strong and the story progresses in a very entertaining way. I will look for other books from these authors or will start reading more in this genre.

To be honest I'm not much of a reader but when I heard about this book I had to check it out. It grabs you from start to finish and really holds your attention because it is written so well!!! A very hip and contemporary storyline for all ages. It is even clean enough for my own 14 year-old daughter to read, and she is also spreading the word to all her friends!!! BEYOND goes way BEYOND what's expected and leaves readers wanting more! Watch out world, BEYOND is the next big thing!!!

I received an eBook from the publisher as part of the promotion for NaNoWriMo at Snow College’s Huntsman Library. It is my pleasure to provide a review. “Beyond” is very well written. It has a very interesting premise, and the ending is even more surprising than the beginning. It ends with a cliffhanger, which is a little annoying, but the sequel is out soon. I love the characters and I can’t wait to see how relationships develop now that circumstances have changed.

The book somehow reminded me of Twilight- a good and bad thing. I liked the set up but felt like things moved a bit too fast at the end. The build up for the fight scene at the end felt rushed and didn't fit well. It ended too quickly with no real explanation on how it all worked out. I liked the characters and how real everything felt.
