Caught in the plot of a fairy tale come to life, young couple Tanner and Bernadette are separated by The Beast, a self-made monster set on playing storyteller with their lives. Each accompanied by mysterious creatures who help and harm in turn, the two women must work from different points of the same story to find each other, bring an end to The Beast’s plot, and return home to a life together.

Told from four alternating points of view, the story recasts a classic tale of kidnapped maidens and brave knights, strange guides and terrible villains, in a modern and notably queer light, with a promised happy ending.

Once there was a beast who wanted to be a villain. Once there was a princess kidnapped to fulfill his story. Once there was a shadow who wanted to learn everything new. Once there was a knight who had to find her missing girlfriend.

This story started off amazing. It didn't manage to hold its quirky, entrancing magical-ness throughout the entire book, I'll admit, but it managed to grab back onto its charm again just before the end. And the middle was filled with so many good things — shadows who serve their king and are falling in love with their new queen, a scared knight on a quest to save her princess, a creature who can't speak but is interested in everything new, a girl who is kidnapped and is the first character I've ever encountered to indulge in my often-repeated commands to "Come on, if you can't argue the bad guy into doing the right thing, at least annoy him enough to make him regret doing the wrong thing!".

Seriously. I love Tanner.

The writing style is beautiful. The idea of the story is brilliant and original. I think what I would have liked is a longer story to develop both of those things. More about how the beast came to be, and more about Tanner and Bernadette together (I mean, for 90% of the book they're separated. It would be nice to be more familiar with the couple we're rooting for, you know?).

But all in all, I was delighted by this book, and I hope more people will find and be delighted by it.
