Ghost Detective

Rate this book
It says a lot about a person when their best friend is a ghost.
Jayce Ventura, ghost detective, has nothing but the deceased as friends. With no love life, no social life, and only Ben and Jerry who'll put up with her, something's gotta give. But what?
When Drake Edwin comes to her for help in finding closure with his nephew's death, Jayce is dragged out of her apathy and into the weird and wonderful world of emotion.
Only trouble is, Drake's nephew didn't OD, he was murdered, and Jayce is the only one who can make good this situation.
Mixing work and pleasure is never the best idea, but when you throw murder into the scenario, it gets a thousand times worse.
Only a helping hand from the other side will get this duo together, but even ghosts can be bitter. Will Drake and Jayce ever make it? Or were they broken before they managed to meet...?

Jayce Ventura - Ghost Detective is a Stand-Alone, No Cliff-Hanger novella, however, it does lead on to another book in the series, with characters you will meet in the upcoming novels.

This book is a sweet, paranormal romance with a kickass heroine who isn't afraid to swear, eat too much ice cream, or come face to face with things that go bump in the night. What does freak her out is LOVE.

Watch out for more of the raunchy romance you've come to expect from Serena Akeroyd's books in the upcoming series.

This book was originally published in 'THEIR DARK PASSIONS - SINFUL SUPERNATURALS.'

Jayce's life is filled with death, ghosts to be exact. She is surrounded by them, she lives with them and her bestfriend Kenna is one.

description

That is until Drake seeks her help to find out the truth about his nephew's death and there is a instant connection.

“Sometimes a soul recognizes another one.”

The characters are fun and I enjoyed their snarky banter with each other. Especially between Jayce and Kenna.

This book is on the lighter side and was such a cute read!

4 all my friends are dead stars

Jayce can see ghosts and she "keeps" a lot of them around. This is a fun take on seeing ghosts and I am glad its not all big cloths and crystal balls. The authors funny takes on things kind of make you laugh and enjoy the book. The main premise of the book is she is trying to help a man named Drake find his own closure since time is not doing it for him. The romance in this isn't needed because I don't need anyone to fall in love with this story because its just cute, sweet, funny and good.

The story is on the soft side of paranormal and a good bridge to see if its a category of romance you may be into. This could easily become a series if the author chose to.

A fun Quick Read. Gave me Charley Davidson Vibes, but Jayce is 1000% less annoying than Charley was. I can't wait to read the rest of this series!

Author is new to me. I like her writing but I don't know about this series. Seems awful depressing to me. Read fairly quickly. I liked the characters but they kinda lack depth. I think it might have been the topic of the story I don't know. Jayce is quirky but I found Kenna annoyed a little. Perhaps I don't understand her humor. It was ok for me but I don't think I'll be reading anymore about this particular series.

Jayce/Jason is a ghost whisperer she has been seeing ghosts since she was a four. This off course has not endeared her to her well to do family at all. After forced visits to psychologists that wanted to perform exorcisms on her Jayce has learned to wait till she’s alone to talk to her ghostly entourage then doing it in front of people.

Jayce’s gift/curse has afforded her a lifestyle of worth. While she does not ask for payment the few people she helps will give her very expensive gifts which she sells to live on.

Kenna her ghostly “mother “ who was there for Jayce throughout her life has referred a case to her. Drake a psychologist and the uncle of seventeen y/o David “ghost” has come to her seeking closure from his nephews’ death. In his profession Drake denounced Jayce as a charlatan and the irony of now seeking her council is not lost on him.

Their first meeting is not a smooth one, they both rub each other the wrong way and are a bit brusque with each other. Part of their probable annoyance with each other could be the attraction that sprang up from nowhere to leave them both feeling a little untethered. Drake is having a hard time dealing with his nephew’s death and the circumstances surrounding it. So while he has noticed things about Jayce that has his body reacting his mind is only concerned with helping his nephew David.

Jayce is having feelings for a living person and in her world that has only lead to pain. She is more comfortable with the dead but Drake is making her feel and care again. She is surprised by the responses of both her brain and her body to him. So while she would like to find out how come she is reacting she also wants very much to help David move on.

This is my second book by this author and I like that she writes very strong, quirky females. They have smart mouths and say what they think however they are not so strong that they can’t appreciate a man showing them affection or finding them attractive. They like to maintain their independence but are more than willing to give a little when they need to.

This story has an old fashioned taking the time to get to know each other instead of jumping right into bed thing going for it. The slow build up of appreciation that Jayce and Drake have for each other draws you in. Plus Kenna with her wit and snarky but loving side makes you so wish that she could give Jayce that hug they are yearning for. Plus dealing with a seventeen y/o male ghost that has all of the natural naughty side that makes you shake your head. It’s a great story with some painful parts, some snarky bits and that magical build when you fall in love with a person’s soul.

Hello from the other side!!!

Okay! I’ve been reading Serena Akeroyd for a while now and this book was not what I expected. Not at all. Not even a little bit. Well, you know what they say about making assumptions? Well, except I was left with such a grin on my face after finishing the first installment of the Jayce Ventura series.

In Ghost Whisperer, we meet Jayce “Jason” Ventura. She talks to ghosts and aims to make their afterlives better. Enter Drake Edwin, a sexy psychologist who has lost his his nephew and needs some help. It seems that they have both been jaded by the world and Jayce, at least, has retreated from most unnecessary human contact. So, meeting Drake has unintended consequences as she, Drake, and her entourage of ghosts set forth to figure out what happened to Drake’s nephew.

This was such a unique take on a ghost and paranormal story, as well as a great little way to start the romance between Jayce & Drake. It has the smart writing I’ve come to expect from this author, as well as a strong FMC who is smart and funny, if not also a little snarky, head strong and blunt. Drake has all the makings of a great, swoon-worthy hero. Their love story progresses along with their investigation in a very natural way.

Oh, and there’s a level of humor that’s divine. The relationships between Jayce and her entourage, especially Kenna, are fantastic! The fast pace of the story doesn’t allow you time y too get bored. And I’m glad this trilogy is complete because I’m diving right into the next one!

This was a cute, quick, entertaining, and original story. Jayce, an originally apathetic character, can see ghosts and uses that gift to try and help them find closure or at least do the best she can for them. When Drake enters the picture trying to find out about his dead nephew, he gives Jayce the "feels." The story slowly shows the connection between the characters and I enjoyed the way the author presented it. When Jayce and Drake finally find David's ghost they find out that his death wasn't what it seemed and try to find a way to get justice. I loved the banter between the characters and the way Jayce handles dealing with the way people view psychics. I also enjoyed her interactions with Kenna, a ghost that's been with her the longest and acts as motherly figure to Jayce. They bicker and squabble a bit but in the cutest way a family might. This was an enjoyable read and seeing the way that Jayce cares for the ghosts themselves is compelling and unique. I would recommend this story to anyone looking for a nice sweet paranormal read with some mystery and a little romance. I received a copy of this book from Booksprout and am voluntarily reviewing it.

Cool book.

This was a cool book. It wasn’t epic. I’m not bursting with the need to tell someone. But I definitely enjoyed reading it. I would have given it a 4 star, but it’s not quite there. It felt like the pilot of a new show. It gives an introduction to the main character. A bit of her backstory, how she grew up as the freak who said she can see ghost. Her side characters, a fun ghost who’s like family, and a new budding relationship. A first case, mostly gets solved, but with ends lying around to grab you and wonder what could be the next case for them.
Jayce was a good character. A little worn out, which left her with no f’s left to give. She’s a little snarky and sassy, but she is kind and understanding, though mostly to the ghosts.
It was a short story, so maybe my 3 is a little harsh. I did enjoy it, and would like to read more. It wasn’t a cliffhanger or anything, but I was left wanting more from it.

Unique premise, fun execution – great read!!

Jayce doesn’t have many “real” friends – her life is too crowded with ghosts. Kenna has been with her since she was four, and is more guardian angel than anything. Ghosts follow Jayce because they are relieved someone can see them at all, or they need her to do something for them.

When Drake (who is hot with a capital H) comes to get closure on his nephew’s death they discover that that there really was more behind his death than it appeared, and they have a mystery to solve and retribution to serve.

Is it wrong to lust after a grieving uncle? Kenna reminds her it has been 7 months. Not your typical romance, but then not your typical anything here…. I am thrilled to know there is more to come in this series!!!

Marie's Tempting Reads ARC Review:

A fun, light, adorable, entertaining read with lovable characters and witty banter along with some fabulous themes. This story itself is unique and charming. Its different...in a good way. It made me smile and was just a lot of fun to read.

Jayce is a definite sassy heroine. She is strong, feisty, knows how to eat and can kick major butt! The romance is a lot lighter but it...fits the story. Drake is seeking closure from his nephew's death and as he and Jayce work together to get it, romance springs forth and a lot of action and entertaining times ensue right along with the adorable romance! I very much liked this!

Jayce Ventura Ghost Detective gets a UNIQUE AND QUIRKY FIVE SHOOTING STARS! Its not your average paranormal romance that's for sure and that is what makes it work!

Jayce surrounds herself with ghosts, which have plagued her since age four. Her guiding ghost Emma, a flapper from the twenties, sets her up with ghosts who need her help. This time it is a teen boy who od'd, but had never touched drugs. His psychologist uncle shows up at her door after getting her card from one of his patients. He wants to know if his nephew took the drugs, and finds out he was murdered by a jealous classmate who spike his drink with special K. There is no way to prove it, but Jayce puts on a seance and just speaks to the ghosts in the room surrounding the wealthy people in the same social circles, which sets tongues wagging and the gossip mill flowing. And for the first time in her life she is attracted to a man, Drake, the uncle of the murder victim. It will remain to be seen if they have a relationship in further books.

Serena does it again!

I loved this book! I've read other books by Serena before and this is another great one. It was a quick and easy read. The characters were interesting. We have Jayce aka Jason who can see and talk to ghost. She has a close ghost friend that is there for her. Kenna is funny. And speaks her mind. Doesn't hold back. That's why I like Kenna. Then we have David who died and his uncle comes to see Jayce for help. Really loved that he's in the psychology profession but is willing to accept Jason and her gift. There is a little mystery or in my case curiousity about David's death. Seems he may be holding back some information about the events leading to his death. Going to start book 2 tonight. Hopefully, the truth will come out and the relationship between the two character will blossom. Great job Serena! Loved it!

Do you believe in ghosts?

Jayce, known as Jason, speaks to ghosts and she does it to help people feel better about a person's death or help them understand why they died. Drake is a psychologist, his nephew David, died from an overdose. He didn't believe this and he heard about Jason and decided to go to her.
I loved that Jayce turned something that has plagued her since she was a child into a business. She is a SFC, she makes no excuses for what she does and she is the real thing.
Drake is skeptical at first, but he has to know what happened to David. The truth isn't always what expect.
I loved how they have an attraction towards each other, but don't act on it until she does what she can to help David find peace. As usual Serena Akeroyd left a cliffhanger so you need to see if they act on those feelings in the end and what is to come her way next.

What a great story, so much run to read! Jayce sees ghosts and lives with them. When she's asked to help someone reach his recently deceased nephew she agrees but doesn't expect to fee more then she should for a client. Drake lost his nephew but doesn't believe took his own life so he contacts a Jayce after a patient tells him about her.

This story is so much, it had me laughing out loud and smiling the whole time. This is a great introduction to a new series and I can't wait to see what happens next. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I stumbled across this book quite by accident and started this story fairly late at night. I had intended to read just a little until I got sleepy before going to bed. Unfortunately for my sleep deprivation, that scenario did not work out. This story captivated me from the beginning. I was unable to put it down and finished reading it in a single pass – giving me extremely little sleep before having to work the next day.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I enjoyed it so much that I chose to buy my own digital copy of this ebook **and** of the next book in the series.

Jayce Ventura is a psychic who draws ghosts to her like bees to a flower. They hover around her for a multitude of reasons. Some want contact with their loved ones and others want closure for themselves. Drake comes to see the pretty psychic on the advice of one of his patients but the name on the business card says Jason Ventura. Drake's nephew supposedly overdosed but he knows there is no way David would have taken drugs. David had won a prestigious scholarship and had the world being laid at his feet. Drake is hoping that Jayce can help him talk to David and solve the mystery of how the drugs got into his system. Jayce and Drake, along with the spirits who inhabit her home, must find a way to get to the bottom of David's death. How they go about it is the fun of this heartwarming story.

Although I enjoyed the book, it wasn't really anything special. One thing I didn't like is that the story drifted between character viewpoints, but it wasn't always "announced" that it was happening. Several times, it took a few paragraphs for me to realize the viewpoint had shifted. This makes for an awkward reading experience and could easily have been fixed by doing a chapter break and titling the chapter based on the character, which has worked well in other such books I've read.

I'll probably try the other books in the series.

Ghost....

Well Jayce is a quirky character for sure. She is a great ghost detective. I mean she has to be when her side kick is a ghost that's she's known since she was four... but what more do you expect out of a ghost detective. Well how about a quick read that just makes your arm hairs stand up. All this talk about fate and ghost and I can't wait til the next book. I gotta see what else happens in Jayce's life.

Jayce is awesome!

This was a great quick read. I really like Jayce and her entourage, she's quirky and gives zero F's, definitely my kind of people. Serena Akeroyd is a fantastic writer and I absolutely recommend any of her books, but I love ghosts, spunky, quirky characters and complicated storylines that weave in an unexplainable romantic connection. So this is a perfect read for me and I look forward to reading more!

Amazing!

Meet Jayce; Jayce is real with her thoughts and not afraid of expressing herself. Her relationship with Kenna is adorable, I’d love to know more about her. I’d personally like to see a bit more into Drake’s past as he’s kind if a mystery right now. Overall I loved this, from start to finish, I devoured it in record time. Time to start book 2!

This is a good start to a new series. I liked Jayce's character. Being able to see ghosts makes people automatically think you are crazy. No one has ever defended her or been on her side except her ghosts until Drake. Jayce decides to help Drake with his nephew's death. The way she goes about everything was very interesting.

What a wonderful introduction into Jayce's world.

Joyce's character is unique and endearing. I'd love to learn more about the souls that are connected to her. She has a wonderful friendship with Jenna- something I'm hoping to read more about in the rest of the series. I have a feeling Drake is going to rock all our world's not only Jayce's.

Fun Read

I love the quirky, but likable MC, Jayce. Her unusual ability to talk to ghosts and the way she deal with it is highly entertaining. Throw in some intrigue and a sexy man... and boom- this story is a must read!
