HEALER'S MAGIC by Teagan Kearney is the first book in the Kala Trilogy series. This was a new author for me. The novel is set in the fictional town of Orleton somewhere near Knoxville, Tennessee. This is a paranormal suspense and urban fantasy series where paranormal species live openly among human beings as long as they adhere to a treaty that protects humans.
The strong female protagonist is Tatya Rourke who is a powerful healer who studies with the shaman at a local reservation. While most of this book is set in contemporary times, there are chapters showing apparent past lives of Tatya. Although she accepts most paranormals, she hates vampires since her parents were killed by rogue vampires. A half demon, half vampire wanting to control her power attacks those she loves as well as others in the community. Due to this crisis, Tatya is forced to work with Vanse, the head of the local vampires.
The characters are compelling and someone you can root for with believable motivations and relationships (for the most part). There are some inconsistencies in the relationship between Tatya and Vanse that did not seem realistic to me. The author did a great job of worldbuilding and the settings were easy to visualize.
Overall, this was book was intriguing, suspenseful and fast-paced. While there is a hint of romance, it is definitely a minor part in book one of this trilogy. This was an entertaining start to a new series. If you enjoy paranormal suspense and urban fantasies then this may be the next series for you.
This just wasn't any good. I am reluctant to tear down an honest work like this but I feel even worse just leaving a bad rating with no explanation.
The author wrote the book for the purpose of being a book. with words and stuff. The book has no interesting story to tell.
The main character has been a completely passive observer up to chapter 22 where I dropped it. She is just the point of view but the story isn't even written in first-person. It reads as if it was supposed to be first-person but it's third-person.
Elements of the magic as well as the competence of the MC with it are arbitrary and adjusted on the fly. There are these flash-back stories of her past incarnations where she was in love with the same person who is her destiny or somesuch but it is never explained why any of this is in any way relevant. I am sure there will be some sort of explanation at the end but there just isn't anything interesting or intriguing to hang onto throughout most of the book because we just don't know. Why the hell should I care what happened to her previous incarnation in the 1600s.
The few actions the MC takes are contradictory and erratic. She doesn't seem to have any kind of defined personality beyond a few very crude outlines. Especially her feeling toward other characters repeatedly make unexplained 180° turns.
It is all so inconsistent and confused that it sometimes felt more like reading a trippy dreamscape. I got this feeling that everything was off somehow like in a dream where all the details are wrong and changing everywhere.
The blurb talks about a supposed battle against her enemy but there hasn't been any kind of battle whatsoever. The bad guy just does whatever he wants and nobody stops him and certainly not the MC. And we have no idea what the police and the other vampires do about it either. The reader, and I think MC as well, are both left in the dark completely about what is even being done about the whole situation. I couldn't have made a tense situation more boring if I tried.
In the quoted reviews from the blurb, there is talk about things being fresh and original which is just absurd. This is just a bunch of the most tired urban fantasy tropes glued together badly. The only originality results from the inability to assemble all the parts into a coherent and interesting story. All the other supposed qualities also sound like they could've been written by review bots. They are certainly not talking about the same book I just read.
As I haven't read the entire story I can't definitively conclude that there won't be some mind-boggling twist that puts every detail in a different light and amazingly assembles them into a new picture or something but I very much doubt it.
I am not a fan of the whole fated mates from many previous lives trope. I think it is overused and doesn't add anything to a story. I'd much rather see the characters interact and actually build a relationship than read about how they had a passionate relationship in their previous lives. You can do both of course, but this book doesn't really build a relationship in the present. If you are an absolute sucker for this trope this might be worth a read to you.
While we are at it this book does a whole lot of telling while trying to kinda show it. You can see the author is aware of this pitfall but she still doesn't manage to avoid it. "Show, don't tell" is important because showing is a whole lot more interesting and engaging than telling. But if you show stuff in a way that is just as boring as dry exposition you haven't won anything. It's about keeping to the spirit of a concept, not the letter.
Now that I think of it I am quite surprised how I could've been so bored even while there was quite a bit happening. I was even bored reading about friends dying at the end which is when I ultimately dropped the book.
I am not entirely sure how much of my boredom could be ascribed to this just not being a book for me. It seems like this should've been a story I find interesting.
tl;dr: This all sounds more scathing than I probably mean it to. The book is not horrible. It's just not at all what the blurb promises. It doesn't know what it wants, it's slow going with very little to keep my attention and it's full of inconsistencies. In one word, mediocre.

HEALER'S MAGIC: BOOK ONE A powerful healer. A treacherous enemy. A deadly conflict. VAMPIRE'S BANE: BOOK TWO Hunted by an ancient predator. Freedom will demand the ultimate price. DEMON'S NEMESIS: BOOK THREE An unknown enemy. Loved ones in peril. A battle for survival.
What did I like? I fell in love with both leading characters, Tatya is a strong, even to the point of headstrong all with good reasons but she really dominated the story. Vanse was the ultimate dream of a man and the way that he loved Tatya was so romantic. Almost from the beginning of time. Each book is addicting, I just could not stop reading. Even though this is an epic paranormal thriller it still felt real due to the details that the author included with the Native Americans. Being one I was very impressed with her work in this area.
What will you like? A strong, well written, thoroughly research material, an addicting storyline and awesome characters. Incredible action, mysticism in a paranormal thriller that will have you glued to the pages and won’t want it to end. Remarkable details and descriptions that keep the edge going but you right in the midst of the action. An extraordinary love story that defies time. Check out the other books that this author has written, she really knows how to put the pen to the paper for urban fantasy’s! I received this from the author for an honest review with no other compensation.
This reader accepted a free copy of "Healer's Magic" from author Teagan Kearney, in exchange for an honest review. The book is written with a steady, slow feel of 'something' is coming; when a past life is introduced fairly early on, it brought on confusion for this reader, wondering if Kearney had somehow mixed up her characters and storyline.... Protagonist Tatya begins to remember some odd dreams and is quite confused by them; that is when this reader thought, "Brilliant! We're experiencing the character's confusion right along side of her." This ploy allowed this reader to feel a stronger empathy with Tatya and want to be with her as she figured out these puzzling dreams.
There were a few minor grammar, spelling and punctuation issues found, most in the form of an extra word added or missing in the narrative. The misuse of the word 'passed' when 'past' was the intent, was a minor irritation for this reader. However, the story was impelling enough that these issues did not overly detract this reader from the tale. Kearney wrote detailed settings that were easily visualized by this reader, giving her the feel that she was trailing alongside of Tatya throughout her journey. Character's were detailed enough to visualize, and their dialogue was natural sounding and believable. This reader felt an almost immediate affinity to the character Vanse, and was really hoping he would win his love back - time will tell, on that issue.
"Healer's Magic" is the first of a series and an intriguing beginning to the world Kearney created. The romance is fairly subtle, yet oddly 'hot' at the same time, and no cursing that this reader recalls, so is suitable for the young adult crowd on up. This reader loves discovering 'new-to-me' writer's to add to her bookshelves, and found that in Kearney. I'm certain I shall continue on with this series and do recommend the book.
Healers magic is an unusual take on the vampire genre. Our young protagonist is a healer, who has been stalked by a vampire through many reincarnation. Each time she is born again she ends up being killed, to prevent the evil antagonist from taking over the world. In this reincarnation there are finally hope, but she has to go through a lot of hardship and sacrifice to win. It’s a very dark story with no HEA yet, but with a world and characters that are well developed and which adds an interesting flair to the genre. The audiobook version has a really good narrator who adds a lot to the story. I have owned the ebook versions of the book for a while, but can say that the audio version was better. That alone says a lot about the narrator. I can warmly recommend the book to those who like the darker types of paranormal romance. I got the audio version of this book for free, and since I liked the book, I am leaving a voluntary review.
I only recently discovered Teagan Kearney, thanks to her Adept Solutions series with its wonderfully named "Special Investigators for the Magickally Challenged". That was so good that I jumped at the opportunity to read The Kala Trilogy books when I saw it. I actually have the trilogy boxset but I'm reviewing the books as I read them.
This is a wonderfully original mashup of mysticism, paranormal and fantasy with a strong female lead facing and overcoming challenges both physical and spiritual (including how to handle flashbacks from prior incarnations). It's "deep" in some ways but still adventurous and fun, with superbly built lead and supporting characters and a great example of world-building that holds everything all together in a way that somehow makes sense. Wow this is a great way to start off a new series. I highly recommend this book and now I'm off to read book 2.
I love to read books that have a l knowledge of the past. This one has so many pasts I got whiplash. Haha. Tatya is a fascinating character who has to learn about herself and her past to survive in this life. She has so many people to lean on and to lose. This author has a great knowledge of the spirit world and what happens that it really makes this book a great read.
I have to say that this was a strange story and I am not really sure how I feel about it. This was an an unusual take on the vampires. Our young protagonist is a healer, who has been stalked by a vampire through many reincarnation. Each time she is born again she ends up being killed, to prevent the evil antagonist from taking over the world. During her final reincarnation she hope, but she has to go through a lot of hardship and sacrifice to win. It’s a very dark story and like I said before I am not sure how I feel about it.
Vampires, reincarnation and mystic powers in this book Tatya hates vampires. But fate intervenes to make her one (at least partially). A healer who's best friend is turned and is who is then hunted by a half demon/half vampire has to find out what happened in her past life's before she can defeat him.
Healer's Magic (The Kala Trilogy, #1), my fourth read/listen from author Teagan Kearney & the first book in her new series. Rachel Leblang's narration adds to the well-written book's enjoyment. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
This was very reminiscent of A Discovery of Witches..... and I loved that series. Very interested in where this story line can go next. Always love Teagan’s work and this was no different. Rachel did an amazing job narrating as well.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I received Healer's Magic as a free copy from the author/publisher. The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion.
Note: Healer's Magic is the third (and latest) version, this book was also released under two additional titles: Tatya's Return and Power Rising. The series was renamed from Samsara to Kala Trilogy... so, watch for duplicates of this book/series.
Mmm, lots of things to like in this unique story line, such as the good writing style, but I never really understood why Vanse liked Tatya. To get into the specifics of what I didn't "get" about this pairing would ruin the plot for other readers, so I'll refrain fro being more direct. I found Tatya to be short-tempered and narrow-minded. She was not a character I ever grew to like, although, I was able to sympathize with her on some occasions.
Healer's Magic was a good story line, with unusual twists and, because I realize other readers may not feel as negative about the main heroine, I decided not to reduce this review/rating based on my personal dislike of the MC. Vanse could have been a stronger character, which may have balanced Tatya, but bending to her moods made him feel weak. Not a story for me, but I see a lot in the writing that others would probably enjoy. I'd read something else from this writer, as I enjoyed her way of telling the tale.
Crime on the rise. A demon/vampire trying to gain power. A girl with past healer lives is hunted. The book has a lot of twists. Magic at use, some humor, and a bit of horror. The characters are well written with Ancient lore thrown in.
