J.J. Holden is the co-author of the DARK NEW WORLD series. He lives in a secluded cabin and spends his days studying the past, enjoying the present, and pondering the future.
Continuing on the Clan's journey for survival in a world closing in on them from many sides, the formation of the Confederation and the connection with Taggart is seeming to bring together a cohesive world that could possibly defeat the Empire and the 'vaders in the looming Spring. Very well developed characters have made this series worth the read. Looking forward to the next book in the series! Will hide the review for spoilers.

Book 1-3 were good. Crashed on #4. Problem with continuity between 3 and 4. 3 has Peter killed by Jazz blowing head in half as he was starting to axe Cassy. 4 states Cassy killed him by stabbing and pistol. Massive undertaking I guess to keep story straight. Sad because I thought I found a nice long series, but after that credibility gap I couldn’t go on.
EMP Backdraft is the fourth post apocalyptic book in the Dark New World series written by authors J. J. Holden and Henry Gene Foster. Can't wait to read book five. Excellent series. Thanks to the author for the complimentary audible version.
I have read the entire set of Dark New World novels and have enjoyed them emensely. I did get a bit confused at the entrance of the 2 gangsta groups and then the many other civie group and military ones too. Ijust kept reading and finally caught up. Jj Holden writes in such a manner that keep one glued to the story, waiting for the next one. Keep them coming.
This book in a good series is one of the better ones. I always find it interesting as to how survivors of an apocalyptic event would organize and function, especially with other groups and this was very plausible. The action moved along well and finally Taggart seems to be identified as a factor in the overall story of the Clan. The end sets up the coming confrontation with both the invaders and those that want to subjugate the survivors.
Now that the Clan has defeated Peter and his White Stag townsfolk they are able to relax just a bit and enjoy their new freedom. Relaxation would not last long though as living in the apocalypse required constant vigilance, maintenance, and updates to the community. A trader traveling through the area shocked Clan members with his transportation. The trader came rolling through the gate in an F-250 pick-up pulling a trailer containing a wood burning contraption. The wood burning furnace, called a gasifier, was the fuel that powered the vehicle instead of gasoline. A deal was quickly construed for the trader to bring them a gasifier in the spring when he came through again. Cassy, community leader together with the community council members decided it would be beneficial to mount a trading mission immediately to the town where the gasifiers were constructed instead of waiting until next spring. This would also be an opportunity to make new friends and establish allies to strengthen their defense. Should the trader come through with another gasifier all the better. The Clan remained alert for any sign or news of trouble heading their way; the confrontation with Peter and White Stag was still fresh in their minds. The military was out there and they should be making plans to oppose the invaders in the West. This too was on Cassy’s radar as a potential threat. Within the community a stranger named Nestor dwelt. Nestor was a dual personality psychopath. When the “other” came to the forefront he became a mass murderer hearing the sounds of battle as a symphony and the people as actors on the stage. Nestor was definitely a problem. All these issues besides the day-to-day running of the farm and the community were a constant drain on Cassy’s mental and physical state. This is Cassy’s story and the Clan; Cassy’s Clan. Kevin Pierce is wonderful as usual.
