About the author

Ruskin Bond is an Indian author of British descent. He is considered to be an icon among Indian writers and children's authors and a top novelist. He wrote his first novel, The Room on the Roof, when he was seventeen which won John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in 1957. Since then he has written several novellas, over 500 short stories, as well as various essays and poems, all of which have established him as one of the best-loved and most admired chroniclers of contemporary India. In 1992 he received the Sahitya Akademi award for English writing, for his short stories collection, "Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra", by the Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters in India. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 for contributions to children's literature. He now lives with his adopted family in Landour near Mussoorie.

ভীষণ সুন্দর একটা বই। একটা বাচ্চা আর তার দাদুর বৃক্ষপ্রেমের গল্প। দাদু ষাট বছর বন অধিদপ্তরের চাকরি করেছেন,গাছ কে ভালোবাসেন, গাছেরাও তাকে ভালোবাসে।


বৃক্ষ প্রেমের এই ধারা দাদু থেকে নাতিতে সঞ্চারিত হয়েছে। সে দাদু'র থেকে গাছের নানান গল্প শুনে,গাছ রোপন করে, গাছকে ভালোবাসে। সে বলে, "A world without trees became a sort of nightmare for me. It’s one reason why i shall never want to live on the treeless Moon."


একদিন এই বালক তার দাদুর পাহাড়ের বাড়ি ছেড়ে চলে যায়,ফিরে এসে দেখে তার রোপন করা গাছেরা বেড়ে উঠেছে,চারপাশ যেন সবুজের স্বর্গ। তবে সবচে বড় অবাক করার বিষয়,তার দাদুকে গাছেরা যেমন ভালোবাসে,তেমনি তাকেও আপন করে নিচ্ছে। প্রকৃতি উদার,মানুষের মত স্বার্থান্ধ নয়। প্রকৃতিকে ভালোবাসলে,সে যত্ন করতে জানে। 


কত আগে কিনেছিলাম বইটা,অনেক দেরি করে পড়লাম। ভীষণ ভালো। বার বার পড়া যায়।

দাদু বারান্দায় এসে বসলে লতা গাছগুলো যেন তার দিকে এগিয়ে যেতে চায় স্নেহ পেতে, আদর পেতে। যেমন করে চারাগাছ ঘাড় বেঁকিয়ে এগিয়ে যেতে যায় সূর্যের আলোর দিকে।

বৃক্ষপ্রেম সঞ্চারিত হয় দাদুর থেকে নাতীতে। সে বনে-বাদারে ঘুড়ে ঘুরে হিমালয়ের কোলে বীজ লাগায় আর কল্পনায় দেখে তাদের বেড়ে উঠা।

হিমালয়ের কোলের বনের ধারের সেই বাড়িটা ছেড়ে গেলেও বহু বহু দিন পর ফিরে এসে দেখে গাছে গাছে ভরে গেছে তাদের বাড়িটা, প্রান্তরটা....গাছগুলো যেন নড়েচড়ে অতি চেনাজনের মতন তাকে স্বাগত জানায়।

আহা! কি মায়াময় পিচ্চু একটা বই।
রঙিন ছবিতে যেন আরো জীবন্ত বইয়ের পাতাগুলো।

This is such an aesthetically pleasing book. Every single page is painted with vibrant colours, illustrations by Ahlawat Gunjan. Short, but entertaining. You will love this book. I, honestly, would rather surround myself with trees and plants, than humans. This short story also has a beautiful storyline, and a great message : "For every tree that's felled, we must plant two".

You need to have a copy of this. The illustrations are absolutely and without a doubt, divine.

It's a little cute story depicting Ruskin sir's love fir nature. It's Ruskin Bond's autobiographical boy Rusty and his grandfather's story of love with trees. If we love them tenderly, they are sure to pay back their love. I loved that creeping-vine's-tendril-touching-grandfather's-feet moment. The way he has portrayed the character of his grandfather, it clearly reflects Ruskin Bond's own personality.
A beautifully-illustrated book, perfect for children, and for young at heart adults 😀
