I’m not sure I fear Death or the Reaper anymore.

Who would have thought Death wore ball gowns? I had no idea and I can honestly say that I’m now coming to realise that I’m easily influenced. Someone showed me a picture of a bony guy holding a scythe and I never questioned that was what Death looked like. But, then again, I also thought that Death and the Reaper were one and the same. Turns out I got it all wrong. Donna Grant has shown me the errors of my ways and put me on the right track. To be honest, I’m happier with Ms Grant’s version and vision.

I really enjoyed Dark Alpha’s Lover. I have resigned myself to the fact that it may be a wee while before I can go back and read Donna Grant’s backlog. I’ve read a couple of the books in the Dark Kings series and this was my first Reaper but it definitely won’t be my last. I would describe this series as short, sweet and pack a punch. Because of my knowledge gained from reading some of the Dark Kings series, I had no problems following on. To me, this shows the author's talent. There are not too many series where you can follow along and still be engrossed without reading all of what has come before.

We meet Catriona Hayes in Ireland where she owns and runs a café. Catriona is a Halfling, half-Fae. She’s known all her life that she was different from everyone else. Cat had two siblings that were halflings as well but they were killed in unusual circumstances. Her parents are dead, killed years ago in an accident and now all the family she has left is her elderly grandfather. She is sure that her days are numbered because Cat's convinced that the Fae want her dead. Cat will do whatever it takes to keep the last member of her family safe…even face the Reaper.

Fintan is a Reaper and his job working for Death is to keep the balance. He and his fellow Reaper’s work together to make sure that all Fae follow the rules. Fintan and the other Reapers must kill the Fae that breaks the rules but keep themselves a secret too. The Fae talk about Reapers as if they’re unsure they even exist. Young Fae (Dark and Light) are taught that they must follow the rules or the Reaper will punish them.

Now, to be a Reaper, you have to be hand-picked by Death and follow some very strict rules. Fintan has never struggled to follow the rules…until now.

Cat and Fintan are on a mission together. They’re determined to find and kill an ex-Reaper who wants Death and the Reapers annihilated. Together they must learn to trust each other and look within themselves to find the answers to win the battle. Cat must learn to adjust to a new part of herself that has just been awakened. Fintan must learn to move on from the past and let emotions be a part of his future.

Dark Alpha’s Lover is what I call a “get in, do the business, and get out again” kind of story. Introductions are made, storylines are developed quickly and connections form without too much angst. I love these types of stories and, from what I’ve been told, the Reapers is the place to go for more of this type.

I wonder what hope Cael has of ever getting his hands on Death? Will Eoghan survive the beast and return back to the Reapers? I want and need to know more.

So, I keep jumping into these Donna Grant books mid series. Its becoming an annoying habit! However, Dark Alpha's Lover worked for me! I was a little confused at the characters and the dynamics between them, but Grant did a good job of fleshing it out without adding too much background to the story. It did help that I had read the most recent Dark Kings book because the series are intertwined.

Cat is a half fae half human hybrid. Her siblings were as well, but they have been killed. Cat is sure the killers, whom she assumes are the Reapers, will come for her next, even though she has no magic. A reaper does come for her, but not to kill her. Fintan wants to use Cat to lure Bran out so they can finally end this war. But, he has certain feelings for Cat that he isn't sure what to do with.

I liked the dynamic between Cat and Fintan. Cat is no shrinking violet but she isn't a reckless idiot either. She knows she is in a very vulnerable position and isn't afraid to accept help, but she also wants to know how to protect herself when that help isn't around. As a result, Cat comes across as a very believable character. Fintan is a reaper and has witnessed a few of his reaper friends find love recently. He didn't think it would happen to him, but Cat throws his world into a bit of disarray. I loved how broken Fintan was and how aware of his faults he was. I also loved that these two did what they thought was best, even if it meant hurting themselves in the process.

This book really moves the plot with Bran forward and introduces some new info. It also weaves in some of the events from the last Dark Kings book as well, so really, you need to read both series to fully understand all the politics going on here.

From Dark Alpha's Lover:

Chapter One

Galway, Ireland

January

Nothing was ever as it seemed.

There were more than humans walking this earth. The things seen out of the corner of your eye were real, even if your mind refused to recognize—or accept—them.

But Catriona Hayes knew of their existence, even if she wished she didn’t. They were Fae. Magical creatures that were so beautiful they seemed otherworldly—because they were.

The Fae had come to this world, seamlessly integrating themselves into the lives of mortals. But then again, when it came to beings with magic, they could do such things.

Cat blew out a breath and put the day’s earnings in the pouch before placing it inside the safe and shutting the door. She straightened and looked through the windows of the café and across the street to the pub alight with merriment.

There was a bit of wistfulness within her when she spotted three women walking into the bar with bright smiles. She’d never been that carefree.

From the first moment she could remember, her family had kept her apart from others. It wasn’t until she was older that she realized what made her so different—she was a Halfling.

Part human, part Fae.

Some might rejoice at the news, but she wasn’t most people.

The first time her grandfather had told her of her heritage, she’d laughed, thinking it was a jest. But as they’d walked down the streets of Galway, he began pointing out the Fae.

That was the day her life changed. At eight years old, she’d felt the weight of the world drop upon her shoulders. The burden had nearly brought her to her knees. And it had lingered, growing heavier with each passing year.

Yet she remained standing beneath it all. Only because of her grandfather. The man who smiled in the midst of the many storms life threw his way. He was what kept her composed and mindful of the dangers of living near Fae.

While she had been fearful of her grandfather’s revelation, her older siblings had embraced it as a gift.

Cat looked down at the counter and the top that covered it. Beneath the thick glass, next to the register, was a picture of her with her brother and sister twenty years ago.

Whatever gift having Fae blood had given her siblings had been taken away in a cruel twist of Fate several months ago when they were savagely killed.

Her brother had been murdered in a crowded pub, while her sister had had her life snuffed out on a train to London. No one had seen either attack. One moment, her siblings had been alive. The next, they were dead. It was how Cat knew the Fae were responsible.

Only beings with magic and the ability to veil themselves could have committed such crimes without a single person catching something on their mobile phones.

Ever since her family’s deaths, she’d been waiting for the Fae to come for her.

What was taking them so long? She and her grandfather—who she kept locked safely away in his cottage where no Fae could enter—were the only ones left.

A flash of lightning pulled her from her thoughts and reminded her that she needed to get home. She started toward the front, turning off the lights as she went. Flipping the sign in the café window to CLOSED, she walked out the door and locked it.

When she faced the street once more, she gripped the handle of her purse and looked around at the people. She knew the Fae could use glamour to disguise themselves, though most preferred to remain beautiful. That made it easier to pick them out, but it did nothing to lessen Cat’s dread.

She remained in the doorway as a couple walked past her. The man said something to make the woman laugh. Cat’s heart caught because she couldn’t remember the last time she’d giggled like that—never mind actually being on a date.

Cat squared her shoulders and turned to the left. Her cottage was toward the outskirts of Galway. She couldn’t wait to get home where she could relax.

“Relax,” she snorted.

There was no such thing for her. While others brushed their cares away with a pint of ale and loud music, she would eat alone at her house and sleep with one eye open.

Being half-Fae had done nothing but make her life miserable. She’d gotten nothing else from it. Her sister, Nora, had been able to move objects with her mind. Her brother, Domhnall, could grow plants.

For some strange reason, magic had passed her over altogether. No matter how hard she tried, there didn’t seem to be a smidgen of magic within her.

Countless times, she’d asked her grandfather what she’d done to not have magic. He’d never quite answered her. In his usual way, he would tell a story about all the Halflings who lived without magic.

But she always suspected that he was keeping something from her.

No amount of conniving or posing the question different ways ever gave her another answer, though. With every year that passed, she was more and more sure that her grandfather was hiding something.

Cat tensed when she walked past a Fae talking to a mortal female. His silver eyes, black hair, and sex appeal were the biggest clues to what he was—Light Fae. At least, it wasn’t a Dark.

The Dark scared her the most with their red eyes. She shuddered just thinking about them.

She turned the corner and quickened her pace. Thunder rumbled the same time lightning zigzagged across the sky. More rain was on the way, but if she were lucky, she’d make it back to her cottage before it came.

Suddenly, she stopped. She didn’t know what had caught her attention, but something told her to go no farther. Her gaze roamed down the street as people milled about.

There was something in the air that draped over everything like a wet blanket. It took her a moment to realize what it was—fear. She looked at the humans and saw that none of them appeared to be affected.

Then she heard the footsteps coming, quickly. She saw the man running toward her and looking back over his shoulder. He passed beneath a streetlamp, and she saw his eyes—red.

But it was the terror on his face that surprised her. She hadn’t thought there was anything a Dark feared, but whatever was after this particular Fae must be frightening.

Her head told her to run, but her body refused to move. She remained where she was, even as a man appeared out of thin air in front of the Dark.

The Fae slid to a halt, his eyes wide. The man before him had long, white hair that was pulled away from his face by three small braids on each side of his head.

She had little time to process that before she saw the light glint off a blade. The sword sliced through the air and cut down the Dark, turning him to dust in an instant.

Shock reverberated through her as she involuntarily took a step back. What kind of weapon did he have that could kill a Fae?

Because she wanted one.

He took two steps away before he suddenly halted, his body stiffening. Then he gradually turned his head to look right at her. She couldn’t make out his face because of the shadows, but she knew he’d seen her.

And then, he disappeared.

She took another step back and hastily looked around, but there was no other sign of the white-haired man. Yet she knew she wasn’t alone.

He was there. She was sure of it. Just as she was sure the Fae would come for her soon.

Somehow, she managed to stand her ground. If she were going to die, she would do it with courage. Even if she was shaking. She wasn’t going to run, no matter how much she wanted to.

She felt something behind her a moment before the sound of footsteps reached her. Cat whirled around, ready to face the unknown stranger. But it was a Dark Fae who walked toward her.

“Shite,” she murmured and turned back around.

“Hiya, darlin’,” the Dark called. “What’s your hurry?”

She walked faster and said over her shoulder, “Long day.”

“Let me buy you a drink.”

“No, thanks.”

She waited for him to say more, and when he didn’t, she gave a sigh of relief. It wasn’t until she was in her cottage that she slumped against the door.

Another day gone.

Fintan is so closed off that I was surprised how easily he gave into Cat. Then there was Cat's ability that she didn't know she had. Loved seeing all the previous Reepers.

Can someone please kill Bran already and then we can have a new terror to fight. Why does it feel like we will have to wait for all the Reapers to have a HEA before he dies?

Review For: Dark Alpha's Lover by Donna Grant 'Dark Alpha's Lover' by Donna Grant is book Four in the "Reaper" series. This is the story of Catriona 'Cat' and Fintan. Fintan is Reaper who works for Death. Fintan's job is to keep the balance by making sure Fae follow the rules. Fintan and his fellow friends are also in middle of fighting a war with a spurned Reaper. Cat is a hafling which is half human and half fae. Cat and her grandfather know some of what a Fae is and what to look for in others. But they don't seem to know all as her brother and sister have been killed. Now Cat thinks they will come for her next. Cat happens to witness Fintan killing a Fae which she didn't think was possible. Now she is intrigued by him and a way to kill Fae. Fintan does spot Cat after his killing and the rules are that if spotted is is to kill that person. But Cat seems to draw him in and he doesn't want to hurt her. When he follows her home he sees allot of Fae's outside her home that are just watching her. He finds that there is something odd going on with her still being alive but not fallen victim to being killed as so many have in the past. This was another exciting paranormal romance read from Ms. Grant. This book is near impossible to put down! 4 - "Then I met you..." Stars!

The fourth book in Donna Grant’s Reaper series finally gives us Fintan’s story. The quiet one of the group has definitely got more about him that we have seen so far, and it was good to get into this Fae’s head.

And I liked that his story was very focused on him and the woman he falls for Cat Hayes; a Halfling herself, she is dealing with the loss of most of her family through Bran’s Dark Army, but the reasons as to why he has directed his attention on her are less than clear at the beginning of the book.

A Reaper couldn’t do his job if his thoughts were on others…

I liked that the story between the Reapers and Bran played out a little bit more in the telling of Fintan and Cat’s coming together as well as the author giving a little bit more on the changing feelings between Erith and Cael. Although relatively shore books there is certainly a lot packed into them.

"I’ve never seen a fae like you…"

"Because there is no other like me."

I am really enjoying this series, I must admit the little glimpses you get of characters from the authors Dark Kings books is making me want to delve into their stories as well, but there is definitely more to come for the Reapers and their battle with Bran, with Eoghan’s capture still very much unresolved, and the unmatched men still to meet their women as the bigger picture plays out.

I can’t find any information as to when the next installment of this series is due for release, I hope that it isn’t too long a wait as it has really got some momentum going now and I am looking forward to seeing how the author plays everything out in the last few books.

In book four of the Reapers series by Donna Grant, DARK ALPHA’S LOVER has a different tone than the other books. While it still has the powerful heroine and the mysterious hero, I found that I wasn’t completely invested in the story from the get-go. I wondered if it was because of the hero, and while I enjoyed Fintan, I’m not sure that he’s my favorite of the Reapers.

You can definitely read this book as a standalone, but as always, I recommend reading the series in order. While the hero didn’t completely win me over, I found the heroine, Cat, to be very interesting. She’s on death row basically since everyone in her family has died. She knows she’s going to be next so with that impending doom approaching, I found her character to be the most appealing.

The romance blooms at a great rate, but I did wish for a little more from Fintan. I’m not sure if it was the pacing, but the beginning of the book did feel a lot slower than what Grant usually writes so just keep that in mind while reading. Other than that, however, I still enjoyed the book.

I hadn’t realised this is the fourth book in a series when I requested and read it but I have to say, it still worked well even though I hadn’t read any of the earlier books. In this fantasy world there are Light and Dark Fae, humans, halflings and, the elite Death’s assassins who are the immortal Reapers. In this story Fintan is the Reaper who is carrying out an assassination when he is spotted by the half-human, half-Fae Catriona. He’s amazed when she doesn’t panic at the sight, standing, facing him and apparently both unafraid and resigned to her own fate. He discovers that her parents and siblings have all been killed and she’s assuming she will be next…..

This is an intriguing paranormal romance with strong alpha males and a feisty, strong, independent and mysterious female lead. It is an action packed story during which the author cleverly reveals aspects of the previous stories so the reader doesn’t feel like they’re missing any key information. The fantasy world is robustly constructed and great to escape into. The war that is happening is presumably the main thread running through the series and the protagonists are superbly portrayed. The romance develops well and I’m definitely looking forward to reading more in the series in future!

I requested and received a copy of this book via NetGalley without any obligation. This is my honest opinion after reading the story.

Another corker of a story from this author who loved to bring magic and romance together. This the fourth Reaper story sees former dark fae Fintan stepping into the spotlight and having his world shaken up! He's a male who has forsworn emotion although he does remember betrayal and yet he's found his place working for Death . Nothing touches him until a young half fae, half human female stands before him unafraid , resigned and definitely unexpected!
Cat has lost so much as her siblings were murdered and now all she has is her grandfather . Born of a family who attract the fae and yet Cat is the only one with no magic at all. So when Fintan appears why should she trust him and yet there's something honourable about him that calls to her. His appearance might be like no other but Fintan is smart and realises that Cat could be just the leverage the Reapers need . Bran has somehow weakened Death and if true to form will continue targeting halflings so dangling Cat seems like a good idea or is it?
I really enjoy this spin off series although do admit that at times its uncannily like the Dragon Kings books as both have a former comrade who is now the big bad stalking them. I'm much preferring the storyline surrounding Bran though as it's fast moving whilst still having twists and turns. Finlan is no slouch but the Reapers are definitely being manipulated and Cat is front and centre part of it all. There's been so much tragedy in Cats life that I'm surprised she is as strong as she is but she's a worthy heroine, pragmatic , brave and open to possibilities. Seeing Finlan disclose his secrets, his pain and history shone a whole new light on the fae and brought home just how cruel and short sighted they can be. Yes plans are in motion and as this book closes there's hope for an old friend to find salvation but for now though it's time to let Cat and Finlan lower their barriers and enjoy some quality time together. One battle at a time because the war is still to play for!
This voluntary review is of an advance reader copy and these thoughts are my honest opinion

Dark Alpha’s Lover is the fourth book in of Donna Grant’s Reapers series. The writing is rich, the characters are intriguing, and the action both in and out of the sheets keeps me on my toes. Although some have had no problem reading them as stand-alones, there is an ongoing storyline to these books so I recommend reading them in order.

Fintan is a dark fae, in fact, he was the darkest fae of them all before he was betrayed and became a reaper. Since then, he has kept himself completely devoid of emotion–no happiness, no sadness, not even contentment. It’s like he’s just existing. Knowing that still waters run deep, this just made me curious as to what would happen if he lost all that control.

Cat confused me. A half-fae, her entire family had magic but hers never manifested leaving her feeling like she didn’t belong. Now, the fae have killed every member of her family except for her Grandfather. She’s pragmatic as hell and accepts that her time is coming up next, and she’s decided to meet that fate head on. She broke my heart with her story, but I also wanted to throttle her. Willing to sacrifice herself for her beloved Grandfather, she refused to see that he wouldn’t want to go on without her.

When Fintan first sees Cat he’s suddenly over-run by desire and a hunger that threatens all his tight control. His new-found emotions had him doing several things entirely against his usual ways that had me smiling more than once. He knows he must put his reapers first so he focuses on solving the puzzle of all that is Cat. No one can figure out why Bran wants a Halfling with no magic and he aims to figure that out before she can be used against Death. Cat ends up surprising him at every turn with her selflessness and her willingness to be used as a tool to defeat Bran.

Although we got a huge dose of insta-attraction, this is not insta-lust type book as I expected. These two fight their connection as hard as they can. When they finally get together it is hot and very sexy but I can’t say I ever totally bought the connection between them and I really can’t tell you why. It just never clicked especially with the added angst at the end, which felt a bit contrived.

Beyond the relationship woes between Cat and Fintan there was a whole lot going on, almost too much. As Bran strengthens, Death is weakening. In desperation, chances are taken to bring in more than one surprising ally. It was these things that kept me turning the pages rather than Fintan and Cat’s story. The last 20% of the book, although exciting, had some revelations that just didn’t quite work for me. In fact, I went back and reread it to make sure I didn’t miss something. I’m not going to give anything away, but an explanation as to why certain things are the way they are would have been appreciated.

This was a good book, and a decent addition to a series I’ve gotten attached to, it’s just not going to be my favorite. I’m crossing my fingers after that epilogue that Eoghan is up next.

Rating: 3.5 Love the Series But Just Liked This BookStars

4th installment in The Reapers Novel is the story of Fintan and Catriona. While these can be read as a standalone, I wouldn't suggest it. Each character is continued on to the next book. Each installment are about one of the Reapers finding their mate while in the middle of fighting a war with a spurned Reaper.

Reapers work for Death who is named Elith. Fae are not allowed to know about the existence of Reapers so when Bran told his mate, a Fae, that he was a Reaper Elith killed her, hence the start of the war.

Bran wants revenge on Elith. He is amassing enough power to attempt to take over and become the new leader of the Reapers, but first he must eliminate Elith.

Catriona, a hafling, has become a pawn for Bran to get to Elith, but the Reapers do not know why or how Catriona can be used. Fintan is determined to find out. What he wasn't expecting was to fall for Catriona. He was once the most powerful assissin for the Dark Fae. He has always been able to stifle his emotions to do what needs to be done, until Cat.

I have not read the first two books in the series so I don't know if it's revealed why there is the rule that Fae can not know of the existence of Reapers. I wonder if Elith regrets this rule since it did start the war that has caused a lot of casualties. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes and how it will change the way the Reapers are ruled.

FTC DISCLAIMER: I RECEIVED AN E-ARC FROM THE PUBLISHER THROUGH NET GALLEY. I VOLUNTARILY OFFER MY HONEST REVIEW OF THE BOOK, THOUGH IT IS NOT EXPECTED OF ME! RECEIPT OF THIS BOOK IN THIS MANNER DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR THE CONTENT OF MY REVIEW!

This is my second time reviewing this author, and I am happy to say that I enjoyed this story much more than the previous one I read of hers!

I came into the middle of the series on this one, but thankfully I didn't need to read those preceding stories or the series that it had spun out of. There was a good amount of world building woven throughout this story, so it was rather easy to follow along with the threads of things.

I really loved the characters of Fintan and Catriona! I thought that they were well suited to one another, and while they fell in love under adversity, I thought that they had a good chance of making it last. I also liked the idea of the Reapers themselves, especially the character of Death! It was a very unique look at things, and one I took a great deal of interest in!

The book had a great conflict, and was somewhat fast paced because of it. The villain of the piece was realistically written, even if I didn't completely understand how and why he was amassing so much power and so much of an army to fight with. Bran was very charismatic and believable, to the point where I almost began to agree with him, though not the methods he was employing to bring about change.

There were a few plot threads left unresolved, which made for a sort of cliffhanger ending that I really didn't care for, causing me to remove a star in my rating. However, I am eager to read the previous books in the series and get caught up for the next release!

Of all the books I've read in this series, I enjoyed this one the most.

Finton is the least likely of the reapers to fall in love. He's suppressed his feeling over the years and they are well hidden. As a result, it takes a bit for them to reappear. That meant the instalove feel is missing from this one. The previous books had a lot of instalove in them. Some better done than others. Finton resists, a lot.

The plot felt stronger too. The series plot is richer and brings in the Dragon Kings. It could be that this book 4 and things are finally feeling developed at a series level. But there was a lot more going on than the relationship between the reaper and the half Fae. Though it's still novella length, it's much more a complete story.

I love this world and enjoy all the little bits of information that contribute to the Dark Kings series. It's a rich world that includes a lot of magic and interest. A great place for many books to bloom and grow. It's intriguing that even Death is at risk in this series.

Reapers make interesting characters. I love that they are a family that supports and cares for each other. They are all different and have depth. I was surprised that there are dark Fae among them. Finton is a dark Fae. I've never considered a dark as a good person but Finton is one. I like that the author shows those from "the wrong side" are of worth.

Of course, I'll keep reading this series. I really want Bran to get his. And I want every little bit of information about the world I can get.

A great paranormal read, the best of this series in an amazing world.

DARK ALPHA'S LOVER is a fast and exciting story of family, betrayal and love; very rich in details and completely draws you in. This is my first book in this series but it feels familiar because I recognize characters from the author's Dark Kings series and it's a credit to her writing that having read only two books from two series, I'm not struggling to make sense of the story, but I'm excited about going back to read the previous books and looking forward to reading more upcoming books in both series.

Catriona Hayes knows a lot more about life than she wanted. As a hafling, part human and part Fae, she is aware of her heritage and other beings that walk the earth, only without the abilities to match. Having lost most of her family under very mysterious circumstances, she knows her number is coming up soon but she'll fight to the death to ensure that her beloved grandfather is safe, even if it means joining forces with a Reaper.

Fintan was a legendary and feared warrior in his day before he became a Reaper. Reapers are bound by two rules: they can't fall in love and they can't reveal their existence to anyone, except one marked for death. After accidentally revealing himself to Catriona, he finds himself fascinated by this hafling who is so accepting of her fate and has become the target of a former Reaper on a vengeful bid, even though the why is not readily apparent.

The developing relationship between Fintan and Catriona is forbidden but she makes him feel emotions that he had buried a long time ago. Plus she's vital to their quest to stop their enemy. Catriona needs help to understand and adjust to her new abilities and she also needs Fintan and the Reapers to save her grandfather. Besides, for the first time she feels more emotions than resignation to her certain death. She and Fintan need each other for more than just the battle to come, but will they be able to overcome the obstacles in their way?
I enjoyed both main characters and the connection they shared. I would love to read more about them at a later date. I also liked the large cast of secondary characters and the crossover with the Dark Kings series. I am intrigued by Cael and can't wait for his story.

The intersection with the Dark Kings's series means while this can be read as a stand-alone, reading both is highly recommended.

Paranormal romance lovers who enjoy alpha males, intrigue and star-crossed lovers, this is the book for you. This series is a spin off of the Dark Kings series and it is the fourth in this series. It can be read as a standalone as Ms. Grant does an excellent job of making needed references and keeping the stories self contained. It is recommended to read all the books because it will give a better view of the world and all the interconnected characters.

This series focuses on the "Reapers". Just as their title suggests, they are ones who bring about death. Those who read Sherrilyn Kenyon Dark Hunter books, the Reapers have a similar deal for their resurrection, except the person holding the reins to their existence is no where near as evil as Artemis. Instead, Death is a kind and loving mistress who learns from her mistakes. In fact, in my mind, she looks like Death in Neil Gaiman's Sandman series.

In this tale, Fintan, one of Death's Reapers is set to find out what is so special about the halfling, Catriona. Cat herself is not sure of why the Fae want her dead as she has lost her entire family other than her grandfather. She hates being part Fae and wants no part of their world or their magic. This story is more of a magical journey awakening the powers Cat has and bringing love and emotion back into Fintan's life. Both of them have experienced a solitary life which makes them perfect for each other. As they learn about each other, the more they like what they see.

From a romance perspective, it is a nice sweet romance. Some may find it to be insta-lust or insta-love, I found it to be more love at first sight. This budding relationship isn't perfect as there are reservations from both Fintan and Cat. I liked that it wasn't easy. I also liked how Cat still stood up to be her own person and didn't let someone else overpower her. The chemistry between the two characters is sensual and sweet. The sex is a bit too tame for me, but that is because I read a lot of erotica. For a paranormal romance, it is just right.

The intrigue in this book carries on as we learn more about Death and her possible weakness. I am hooked and want to read the next book because there are hints of something bigger. And the continued theme of lovers that should not be but end up finding their happily ever after is alluring. Ms. Grant writes a good premise of all the obstacles that would prevent the mating from happening. Yet she sets it up so that little nuggets of information and things along the way make it possible in the end. This is well done and generates the right kind of conflict to elicit emotion and angst yet end in a satisfied and happy ending. This book and series is recommended to all paranormal romance lovers. It is a book with wide appeal and spell binding writing.

Better than the last one..

This was much better than the last Reapers book. I really liked Fintan and Cat. Fintan had closed off ANY kind of feelings over thousands of years and Cat taught him to feel again. And Cat thought she didn’t have any magic, which she had a lot of. I’m still getting tired of Bran, though. I mean, really, he has to get away in every book? That makes the Reapers look a little worthless, IMO. They all keep trying to kill him by stabbing him. Why doesn’t someone just cut his head off? Time to put an end to him and find a new storyline.

And it’s time to find a male narrator OR stop bringing the Dragon Kings into the Reaper books. Or, maybe it’s time for me to stop buying the Reaper audibles. The Reapers were all males when the series started so why was a woman chosen as a narrator? Doesn’t make a bit of sense. A DRAGON that sounds womanly is horrible.

The overall story was wonderful but the narrator and Bran have to go. Again, IMO. I absolutely love the Reapers but this story is getting old. Ya', gotta change it up now and then or you lose readers.

There is explicit sex in this story, as usual, and the F-bomb was used 2 times.

As to the narration: Victoria McGloven simply cannot narrate. Since 2012 she’s narrated 8 books so that should tell you something. She never, ever laughs when the book calls for it and she only whispers occasionally. She does woman’s voices great but that’s not who she should be doing better at. The men’s voices are still terrible. Isn’t Victoria McGloven reading reviews of other female narrators, to see what people are saying about them? There are some fantastic female readers and it would behoove Ms. McGloven to listen to some of them. Katherine Kellgren, Tanya Eby, Sophie Eastlake, Mary Jane Wells, Ashford McNab, to name a few.

I will admit that I've only read a few books by Donna Grant. The real sad part is that the ones that I read I really enjoyed. So why doing I read more?

No clue. I just don't have enjoy time to read everything.

I'll tell you I'm very glad that I took the time to read Dark Lover's Alpha. I so very much enjoyed it. I love the whole idea of this world.

I loved, loved the characters! I also loved the idea of reapers and fae. I don't think we have enough of those in paranormal's for me. I will have to make sure to dive more into the series.

Unfortunately for me, I started on book #4. I don't really like do that but I couldn't help myself, I really wanted to read this story.

So glad that I did. You'll feel so bad for Catriona. Her life right now totally sucks. She's been put through the ringer and it's not over yet for her. Which makes the fact that she meets a cold-hearted reaper the more romantic.

I know what you are thinking...how does that make sense? You'll have to read the story to understand it. I can't give you everyone. I will tell you that if you're a fan of paranormal you'll really enjoy this story. Dark Alpha's Lover is very well written, the story is shorter then a novel but you won't think that when you're done reading the story.

I do have one issue with it though and I'm pretty sure it is only my problem, not that it's a big one but I hated and thought the title didn't fit with the story. As bothersome of a issue it didn't stop me from totally enjoying the story!

Yet again I am jumping into a series that is already and progress. Some portions were no problem for me, others I was somewhat lost. I'm not normally a fan of Fae stories but Dark Alpha's Lover blurb was interesting enough that I thought I would give it a try. Plus, I have a few friends who read author Donna Grant and have suggested I give her a try. So I gave this new to me author a try.

Fintan and Catriona story was easy peasy for me to follow. Cat's siblings who had magic, were murdered, her parents also dead. She's half-fae with no magic and has lost all her family except her grandfather. She's lost so much and instead of poor me, she is standing tall and facing what gets thrown her way head on. Fintan is an elite assassin, a reaper that works for Death. He's been burned in the past and now is an emotional popsicle. When he hears of a Halfling that draws the attention of other Fae he's curious. What is it that draws other Faes to her? How is she still alive when other Halflings were murdered? His curiosity draws him to her but when she doesn't reject him, that popsicle begins to melt. Most everything between them I had no problem keeping up with.

The parts I semi-struggled with is the whole Bran thing, Eoghan missing and the other Reapers finding love. The majority is explained to an extent throughout the book so I was able to piece most of it together. I'm still fuzzy/hazy about the other Reapers finding love. Obviously, had I read the previous books I would more than likely not be so confused...especially when it comes to Bran's lost love. As for the missing Eoghan, I kept WAITING for someone to figure out the solution to that problem, especially once the secret regarding Cat is revealed. Did no one see it besides me?!

As my first book by Donna Grant, Dark Alpha's Lover was a great read. I enjoyed it so much that I read it in one sitting, until 2am! The ending did feel a smidge rushed, but overall, I enjoyed the book. My curiosity has been piqued and now I want to start the Reaper series from the beginning. I look forward to reading the next in the series.

I absolutely adore Fintan! I just smile thinking about him! I have been dying for his book and finding out why he is the way he is! He is so different from the other Reapers! He is set apart by not only his white hair and red eyes, his life in general. He was the most feared of all the Dark Fae and is still talked about as one of the most deadly among his kind. He was sold to Tarreth, the King of the Dark Fae at a young age to be his slave, trained to be his most lethal assassin, until Tarreth himself feared Fintan and ultimately betrayed him. Fintan never knew what family was until he was given the chance to become a Reaper. They are his brothers. They are the keepers of the balance between good and evil. Together they are battling an enemy set to destroy all that they have fought for.
By chance he meets Catriona Hayes. She is a Halfling. Part human and part Fae. Her family is known for being special because it's uncommon that three Fea visited her mother and left her with 3 halfling children. Growing up Cat never exhibited any gifts like her siblings had, so why now was she on the radar of an evil Fae named Bran seeking to destroy anything and everything in his path for vengeance. Fintan learned long ago to turn off his emotions and for the first time in his long life, Cat is opening him up. Will their love be strong enough to break down the walls Fintan has firmly cemented around his heart. All the while danger is at every turn and Bran wants Cat for himself. Fintan will do everything he can to keep her alive, but Catriona Hayes may have more power than she realizes!!

Don't miss this book! It was so good! We also find out more clues that fit into the Dragon Kings and what's happening in their world!

I’m so happy for Fintan and Cat. I teared up when Fintan told his story to Cat that he hadn’t told anyone. Not even his Reaper brothers. My heart broke for him and it made me hate the Light Queen even more than I already do. They both needed each other and I’m so glad that Fintan gave into his feelings that he had shut off long ago. Onto the next book and the adventure that awaits the next reaper.

Donna grant dark alphas lover

The 4th installment in the reaper series
Fintan is one of deaths reapers, with his long white hair and white red rimmed eyes, sets him apart from all fae no matter that he is a reaper to do the bidding of death. Cat is a fiery green eyed ginger half fae with an act of saying what she feels, and let me tell you I love both of them. In this book Donna does a switch on us that had me screaming I love it....i love it. Oh the feels.... Boths back stories are full of loss, sadness, loneliness and regret but that doesn't stop our hero's from doing there part and finding each other. The added characters from the Dragon King books had me pause took me a second to come to terms with it and I was like oh the feels
This is a absolute must read for any of her fans and new comers I'll just say you will get addicted...

Book four of the Reapers series, Dark Alpha's Love, has a different tone. It still has the typical mysterious and strong hero and a powerful heroine but for some reason I liked this story a lot better then the previous books in the series. The story line was good, the attraction between Fintan and Cat was delightful to say the least, and the chemistry! Oh don't get me started.

Cat had to be one of the most interesting heroines by far in this series. Since every member of her family has died, minus her grandfather, she knows that she will be next. Knowing that someone is targeting her next and facing that looming danger made her character all the more interesting.

I felt for Fintan throughout the novel. Knowing what he went through in his past and watching him struggle with his feelings for Cat was so endearing. I truly adored this book couple. It also didn't hurt that their chemistry was through the roof.

Though this book is a part of a series, it can still be read as a standalone. With that being said, I still highly suggest reading the series in order. The only thing I can possibly complain about is that I wish for more Fintan. Overall, this was an amazing book to read. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

•••••••••••

REVIEW: DARK ALPHA’S LOVER is the fourth installment in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult REAPER paranormal/fantasy romance series. The REAPERS is a spin off from Donna’s DARK KINGS series which is a spinoff from Donna’s DARK WARRIOR series which in turn is a spin off from Donna’s DARK SWORD series- all set in the Highlands of Scotland. You do not have to have read any of the previous series to understand the premise but many of the events overlap with the events of the Dark Kings. This is Reaper Fintan, and half-fae/half human Catriona Hayes’s story line.

SOME BACKGROUND: The Reapers (believed to be a folk lore amongst the Fae) are a group of Dark and Light Fae, selected by Death (aka Erith), on their own deathbed, to do her bidding-Death is the judge and jury; the Reapers are the executioners. The Reapers are not harbingers of death, but are tasked with destroying the Light and Dark Fae who have crossed a line from which there is no return. All Reapers must follow two rules: never to fall in love; and never to reveal their existence to anyone. If you have read Donna’s DARK KINGS series you will recognize the familiarity between the two series as both follow a similar plot and premise including betrayal by one of their own.

Told from several third person perspectives DARK ALPHA’S LOVER follows Reaper Fintan as he is tasked with protecting and gathering information about the half-fae Catriona Hayes. Cat believes she has not been blessed with the gift of magic but circumstances begin to unfold that reveal more about Cat’s abilities than anyone could ever have imagined. Cat is being stalked by Bran- a former Reaper with revenge on his mind, revenge aimed at the Reapers and the woman known as Death. What ensues is the building but forbidden relationship between Fintan and Cat, and the discovery about the who and what of Bran’s plans for the Reapers he once called friends.

The relationship between Cat and Fintan is forbidden by Reaper law-a law that once saw the destruction of Bran’s lover-a death he has chosen to avenge at all costs. Fintan knows that to fall in love could mean death to the woman that calls to his heart but Death knows that the world is changing, and along with, so too, are the Reapers who do her bidding. The $ex scenes are limited, seductive and compelling.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including all seven of the current line of Reapers, as well as several individuals from some of Donna’s other connected series and story lines including a number of the Dark Kings including King Constantine, and Balladyn-one time Captain of the Queen’s Guard, a famed warrior in the Light Army, and now a member of the Dark. Balladyn’s purpose throughout both of the series is increasing in relevance along with the Light Fae Rhi.

DARK ALPHA’S LOVER is a story of family and love; betrayal and revenge; magic and power. The cross over between the Dark Kings and the Reaper’s series is revealing, and the connection between the two enemies may be closer than we think as both are avenging the loss of someone they loved. The premise is imaginative, revealing and engaging; the characters are dynamic and courageous; the romance is passionate. DARK ALPHA’S LOVER takes the reader closer to a supernatural war where everyone will lose, in the end.

Dark Alpha’s Lover by Donna Grant
Reaper #4

Fintan & Cat – Dark Fae and Halfling – meet one night in an alley filled with fear. Fear that Cat senses pouring off a soon to be dispatched dark fae sentenced to death by…Death. Fintan has suppressed his feelings to the point that most who know him believe they are gone forever. Well, it seemed so until he found Cat in that dark alley, decided not to kill her, followed her home because she was “different” then began to investigate just why she was different. With Fintan’s Reaper partners still trying to vanquish Bran, their onetime “brother” turned evil, and the realization that Cat is of interest to Bran and thus no doubt worth saving; Fintan sets himself up as her protector. With Cat assuming she is a Halfling without magic and expecting to be murdered soon she determines she has nothing to lose by putting her life in Fintan’s hands. With Fintan having had his trust betrayed in the past he is unwilling to trust again though willing to protect Cat. As the two get to know one another better their attraction grows BUT will it be enough to lead them to a HEA?

I think what I like most about Donna Grant’s paranormal fantasy romances is that the characters have substance and the stories are more than a vehicle for sex and violence. There is a hope for something more and that something more shows up for each couple that she tells the story for. The story has a plot with a clear focus for the finale and all of the stories in the series lead to and support that perfect ending. I am looking forward to reading more to find out just what the ending of this series will be. With that said, in this book the other reapers and previous mated couples make a brief appearance, Death and Cael are perhaps set up for romance at some point in the future, Eoghan’s whereabouts is hinted at and a few mysteries are solved that may help them ultimately get the better of Bran and his cohorts.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press - This is my honest review.

So many authors start to run out of new material after years of writing but Author Donna Grant is not hat author. Her books continue to surround the reader with sharp details, intrigue, brokenness, redemption, evil, mystery, paranormal happenings and love. In this fourth book of A Reaper Novel series the Reaper Fintan takes center stage though the other Reapers make appearances as well as Death. Let me not forget to mention Constantine King of the Dragon Kings along with Roman and Cain from the Dragon Kings series also makes a cameo appearance in this book. I can't wait to see where that meeting leads in future books.

Non-emotional Fintan trusts no one except Death and the other Reapers. He has never known anyone to just want to touch and love him because everyone feared him. It brought tears to my eyes the words written about this character. It is so hard to even imagine never being loved. The author did an outstanding job of portraying his strength while slowly exposing his weaknesses which caused this reader to fall deeply in love with his character.

Would we be able to be as strong as Catriona? Losing loved ones, finances, and just waiting to die; forces some people to become more resilient or others to just give up and die. Catriona's personality was exciting, empowering, brave, and very well written. Her brain is amazing and she solves a puzzle that no one else guessed. It was quite brilliant in concept.

This story is fast paced and full of exciting moments with some spiciness thrown in. For this reason I give it 5 STARS.

Dark Alpha’s Lover packs a punch. It’s sexy, exciting and fast-paced.

The first time her grandfather had told her of her heritage, she’d laughed, thinking it was a jest. But as they’d walked down the streets of Galway, he began pointing out the Fae.
That was the day her life changed. At eight years old, she’d felt the weight of the world drop upon her shoulders.

Dark Alpha’s Lover by Donna Grant is another engrossing installment in her Reaper series. This is the fourth entry in the series which is connected to and running concurrently with her Dark Kings series. If you are a fan of her dragon kings, you need to be reading both series to fully understand all the behind-the-scenes political shenanigans going on. If you are not following either series, this tale can work as a stand alone as the romance and the danger plot herein are self-contained. I’m a fan of Donna’s works and am really enjoying both series. I greedily look forward to each new release - not only for the awesome story that will be told – but, also for any juicy tidbits she may disclose regarding my favorite characters and the story arc extending throughout the Reaper series and that of her Dark Kings.

Dark Alpha’s Lover is the story of fae halfling Catriona 'Cat' Hayes and dark fae Fintan, a Reaper who works for Death. Reapers are in charge of ensuring the fae follow the rules. Both light and dark fae are taught as youngsters that they must follow the rules or suffer the consequences courtesy of the Reapers. In the series arc, Fintan and his fellow Reapers are in the midst of a war with Bran, a former spurned Reaper, who has somehow managed to weaken Death and who is targeting halflings. Up till this installment in the series, Fintan has never had an issue strictly following Death’s rules.

Cat has experienced much tragedy in her life; her entire family has been wiped out by the fae and she fears that she is next even though she possesses no magic. When Cat witnesses Fintan killing a fae, she is fascinated as she did not think it possible to defend herself against a fae. Unfortunately, Fintan notices that Cat saw him snuffing out the fae and Death’s rules decree that, if they are spotted, they must also take out the witness. He follows her home only to find an atypical scene with a slew of fae outside her home keeping watch and decides to first investigate further how she’s managed to stay alive when others like her have fallen victim.

Cat and Fintan are both likable and believable. Fintan is known for being unemotional as he’s never known any type of love in his life. Cat shakes his world as he finds himself caring about her and trusting her when he’s only ever trusted Death and his fellow Reapers. Cat is an enigma. She’s strong, resilient and brilliant with phenomenal puzzle-solving abilities. They share a common mission in that the rogue ex-Reaper needs to be taken out – Cat because he’s targeting her kind for extinction, and Fintan because he’s targeting Death and the balance in the Universe that the Reapers are sworn to maintain. I liked the dynamics between them, but can they trust each other enough to work together for a common goal?

No spoilers – but, fans will be enthralled by the possible future ramifications of a quick walk-on by Dark Kings Constantine, Roman and Cain within. In addition, we also get to catch up with the other Reapers and Death, who rocks a ball gown. Who would have thought?

Following please find a few of my favorite quotes from Dark Alpha’s Lover:

“We know her days are numbered, so we watch and wait.”
---
She turned back to him. “I’ve never seen a Fae like you.”
“Because there is no other like me.”
She suspected no truer words had ever been spoken.
---
Her thoughts drifted to Fintan. His voice was deep and so captivating that she wondered if he used it on purpose. Almost like a weapon, but one of silk and seduction instead of steel and blood.

Dark Alpha’s Lover packs a punch. It’s sexy, exciting and fast-paced. Newbies will enjoy it and fans will inhale it. It really moves the plot with Bran forward and weaves in some Dark Kings’ intrigue too. If you enjoy paranormal urban fantasy romances with awesome characters and a well-plotted storyline, I’d encourage you to put this series on your radar.

That was a fun read, seeing what the Reapers were up too. Really enjoyed this and loved visiting the 'Dark World' of Donna Grant once again. Can't wait to read more. It's obvious that Bran is going after Rhi and I'm curious if we'll finally learn who her Dragon King lover was and if he'll come out of the shadows to save her, and if Rhi will finally get over him for Daire who is a Reaper. That should be interesting, especially for me since Rhi is my favorite out of the entire Dark World series that I've read thus far. Yes, I can see Rhi becoming a Reaper and be a total badass being one. Sadly, that will mean she has to die to become one. I think Rhi's character is going to have some major decisions to make and I clearly see her going up against the Queen of Light Fae, this Queen is slowly becoming a major villain which more info was provided in this book.

Fintan is the focus of the next Reaper book and he is the Reaper with snow white hair and white eyes rimmed in red. We find out his backstory as a dark Fae before he is betrayed and killed and why he is the only dark Fae with pure white hair and eyes that are almost all white. He doesn't feel. He doesn't let emotions out, not since his death, until he sets eyes on Cat. Catriona Hayes comes from a family thrice blessed by Fae visits, except, unlike her family members she has no magic. Tragedy has also befallen her too many times to count and she expects her death will be next. When she spies Fintan killing a dark Fae, instead of fearing him she is drawn to him and him to her. She is full of courage and agrees to help Fintan trap Bran when he sheds light on the fact that it was Bran who murdered her siblings. They partner up but what they don't expect is the well-formed plan Bran has set for Cat and how he plans to get her to agree to help him. When Fintan believes she has betrayed him she faces Bran alone but Bran's ultimate plan continues to have surprises that neither see coming. I love the Reaper series. It is definitely unfolding and the plot is developing well. I like Fintan and his back story and Cat was a perfect match for what he needed in a partner. Overall, very entertaining adventure and love story.
