The cover of this book is one of the most beautiful I've seen, which is actually why I grabbed this book and hoped to heck the blurb was accurate, because it sure won me.
Don't let the word novella fool you. While this story is light on words, it's heavy on message and great characters. Trish is a dutiful Navy SEAL wife, perfect mother and keeps the family together while her SEAL Langley is away on deployments. All this while working a demanding full time job herself. She becomes tired, resentful and her world seems to come crashing down when one of her kids starts acting out.
Langley is the perfect husband. He has two sets of vows to uphold - those he swore to his wife and the ones to the Navy and his Country.
This story gave such a wonderful look into the life of a SEAL. They have families, they love their kids - they just happen to have jobs which require them to be gone more than they are home - and God forbid, some of the things they encounter while on deployment are horrific. Balancing that into a 'normal' life and marriage is tough and takes determination.
I immediately connected with Trish and felt for her. I felt the same with Langley and was rooting for them to work things out. Just when they were at that fork in the road, something horrific happened. I won't give spoilers, but will say that sometimes you have to go through hell to get to heaven and appreciate what you have and what you could lose in a heartbeat.....
