After Skin Stealers but before Cassandra or The Library, Before the Winter and Fall details the not-so-clear events of what exactly took place in the five year gap between books one and two.
Recently released from the hospital after recovering her own body again and suffering from partial amnesia, Ebony Lyre's found she has a whole new life to re-learn. And it's not quite like a soap opera, though she's positive her amnesia sort of suggests otherwise. The similarities? She's apparently got a filthy rich boyfriend with a secret job, Nathan Helsing, who shot and killed his father, has a dead mother, an adopted brother named Andrew, and serious PTSD.
The differences? His job includes working for a secret place called the Dread World - an entire society hidden under her own, his father's body had been inhabited by a monster at the time, he was raised by his dead mother the ghost, and most of that PTSD has come from being a monster hunter.
Oh, and now Ebony's sister Ivory has decided to become one of these monster hunters, too. And if she decides she really does want to date Nate, she'll be along for the ride...
There's much for her to relearn, here. Certainly. And not just about herself and Nate, but also about the Dread World and some of the people in it. Like the supposedly cold and elusive Spencer Crue, Andrew's peculiar friends Lukas Cord and Eira Caddell, and of course, Alexandre Aldea - the vampire prince who's scheming is likely to ensure Nate and Ebony end up together one way or the other.
