ব্রিটিশ উপনিবেশ, পাকিস্তান ও বাংলাদেশ-এ ভূখণ্ডের এই তিন ইতিহাসপর্বে ছড়িয়ে আছে ফারুক চৌধুরীর জীবন। ১৯৫০-এর দশকের মধ্যপর্যায়ে নবীন পাকিস্তান রাষ্ট্রে তাঁর কূটনৈতিক জীবনের সূচনা। কূটনীতিকের চোখে তিনি দেখেছেন পাকিস্তানের বিলয়, বাংলাদেশের অভ্যুদয় এবং স্বাধীনতা-পরবর্তী বাংলাদেশের ঝোড়ো রাজনীতির উত্থান-পতন। এ সময়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবস্থানে থেকে সাক্ষী হয়ে আছেন বাংলাদেশ, ভারত উপমহাদেশ ও বিশ্বের নানা অঞ্চলের চমকপ্রদ সব পররাষ্ট্রীয় ঘটনার। একদিকে তিনি পেয়েছেন মওলানা ভাসানী, বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ও জিয়াউর রহমানের মতো জাতীয় নেতাদের নিবিড় সান্নিধ্য; অন্যদিকে সংস্পর্শে এসেছেন বিশ্ববরেণ্য নেতাদেরও। ফারুক চৌধুরীর এ আত্মস্মৃতি বাংলাদেশ ও এ উপমহাদেশের বিশ শতকের দ্বিতীয়ার্ধের কূটনৈতিক ইতিহাস এবং সে ইতিহাসের নায়ক ও খলনায়কদের এক অন্তরঙ্গ ও উপভোগ্য চিত্র তুলে ধরেছে।

About the author

Faruq Ahmed Choudhury was a distinguished Bangladeshi diplomat, prolific author, and dedicated social advisor. Known for his wit, professionalism, and "larger than life" personality, he played a pivotal role in shaping Bangladesh's early foreign policy and contributing to its largest non-governmental development efforts.

A social and athletic student, he was a champion tennis player during his university years. Though he was known for his love of socializing rather than strict academic discipline, he possessed a brilliant memory. In the 1955 Central Superior Services (CSS) examination, he achieved the second-highest marks in English in all of Pakistan.

Diplomatic Career and Public Service
Born on January 4, 1934, in Assam, India, heattended the Sylhet Government Pilot School and later Dhaka University, where he studied English Literature. In 1956, he entered the Pakistan Foreign Service through merit, serving in Rome, Beijing, The Hague, and Algiers before the independence of Bangladesh.

Upon the birth of Bangladesh, he became a "patriot to the core," serving the new nation for two decades in high-profile roles:

- Ambassadorial Roles: Served as Deputy High Commissioner in London, Ambassador to the UAE, and Ambassador to Brussels and the EU.
- High Commissioner to India: His final major posting before retirement.
- Foreign Secretary: Headed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served as the Secretary-General of the first-ever - SAARC Summit in 1985.
- Conference Coordination: Successfully managed the 1983 Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers (ICFM) and the 1994 SAARC Summit.

Post-Retirement and BRAC
After retiring from government service in 1992, he transitioned into the development sector, joining BRAC as an advisor. His strategic guidance was instrumental in BRAC’s expansion and growth. He eventually served on the Governing Body of BRAC, the Board of Trustees of BRAC University, and as Chairman of Delta-BRAC Housing Company.

Literary Contributions and Awards
After retiring from government service, Faruq reinvented himself as a writer. He became a beloved columnist for the weekly Jaijaidin. Choudhury was a highly respected analyst of international affairs. He authored twelve books in Bengali, including Desh Deshantor, Priya Farzana, Nanakhan Nanakatha, and Swadesh Swakal Swajon. His literary excellence was recognized with several prestigious honors:

- IFIC Bank Literature Award (2014)
- Bangla Academy Literature Award (2016)

Personal Life
A devoted family man, he was married to Zeena (Zeenat) Chowdhury. Together they had two children, a son named Adnan and a daughter named Farzana. Faruq Ahmed Choudhury passed away on May 17, 2017, in Dhaka at the age of 83.

যারা আমাদের অগ্রজ তারা স্বভাবতই আমাদের চেয়ে বেশি দেখেছেন, জীবনের প্রতি বাঁক পাড়ি দেবার সময় জমিয়েছেন ভালো-মন্দের মিশেলে নানান সব অভিজ্ঞতা,যা সমৃদ্ধ করেছে তাদের জীবন কে। এমন ই একজন অগ্রজ সাবেক পররাষ্ট্র সচিব ও কলামিস্ট ফারুক চৌধুরী, তার ই আশি বছরের সুদীর্ঘ জীবনের কথকতা নিয়ে আত্মস্মৃতি "জীবনের বালুকাবেলায় "। ফারুক চৌধুরী সেই ষাটের দশকে তৎকালীন সিভিল সার্ভিস অফ পাকিস্তানে যোগ দিয়ে কর্মক্ষেত্রে বিদেশে কাটিয়েছেন দীর্ঘকাল সেই সুবাদে পররাষ্ট্র দপ্তর, পররাষ্ট্রনীতি নিয়ে নানা ঘটনার স্বাক্ষী হয়েছেন, সান্নিধ্য পেয়েছেন অনেক রথী,মহারথীর যা তার লেখায় বেশ ভালো ভাবেই ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন।স্বাধীনতাপূর্ব কূটনীতি আর স্বাধীন দেশের কূটনীতির পার্থক্যটা ভালোই দেখিয়েছেন।কীভাবে বাঙালি জাতি অন্যের দারস্থ না হয়ে,নিজেদের স্বাতন্ত্র্য রক্ষা করে বঙ্গবন্ধুর নেতৃত্বে স্বাধীনতা লাভের মাত্র সাড়ে তিনবছরের মধ্যে বিশ্বের প্রায় সব রাষ্ট্রের স্বীকৃতি অর্জন করেছিল তার বেশ চমৎপ্রদ কিছু বর্ণনা আছে।কৌশলী ফারুক সাহেব বঙ্গবন্ধুর সাথে যেমন কাজ করেছেন তেমনি কাজ করার অভিজ্ঞতা আছে একনায়কদের শাসনামলেও। যারা দেশের বাইরে পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রনালয়ের ক্রিয়াকলাপ নিয়ে জানতে আগ্রহী তারা পড়ে দেখতে পারেন।

এক তারকা হাতে রাখব দিবো কারণ-

ঘটনার ধারাবাহিকতার বেশ অভাব ছিলো, শব্দ চয়নে সার্থকতার কোনো প্রমাণ পাইনি। ভাষা আন্দোলনের সময়ে তিনি ঢাকা কলেজের ছাত্র ছিলেন, নিজে তো অংশ নেন ই নি এমনকি তার লেখনীতেও সেই উত্তাল গৌরবময় সময় ছিলো অনুপস্থিত। আবার,একই কান্ড ঘটিয়েছেন মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সময়েও। সে সময়ে যখন সারা দেশের মুক্তিকামী জনতা সামরিক জান্তার বিরুদ্ধে অবস্থান নিয়েছিলো তখন জনাব ফারুক সাহেব ঢাকায় নিরাপদে নয়মাস অফিস করেছেন আর আত্মস্মৃতি তে সযত্নে এড়িয়ে গিয়েছেন মুক্তিসংগ্রাম কে।ব্যক্তি আর পরিবার নিয়ে কচকচানি ছিলো বিরক্তি উৎপাদনে যথেষ্ট।

ভদ্রলোকের নিজের জীবনের গল্প, কিভাবে সার্ভিসে ঢুকলেন এবং হালকা পাতলা বিবরণ দিয়েছেন, তবে ভেতরের অনেক কথা ভদ্রলোক চেপে গেছেন। বাংলাদেশের পররাষ্ট্রনীতি সম্পর্কে কিছুটা ধারণ পাওয়া যাবে, বিশেষত উনার পররাষ্ট্রসচিব থাকার সময়টা বেশ ইন্টারেস্টিং।
