Saboteurs is a fantastic prequel novella to Ben Peek's The Children series and features exiled baron Bueralan and his saboteur crew out on a job before event of The Children begins and gives us a wonderful insight in Bueralan's dark and seedy world in which his life revolves. While in this case it is a novella I do think that this story would have worked equally well if it had been expanded into a full length novel as I wish it had been as it almost felt like as soon as I was into the story and implanted into the world that it had sad finished already and I personally wanted more!

The novella will work as a prequel as mentioned to those already into the series like I am and gives a deeper insight into the saboteur while it would still work well as a way of introducing yourself into Peek's wonderful world for those who haven't started the series yet.

Either way this novella has an important place within the series and is welcome addition to the other books, it's also a great little tidbit as followers of The Children wait impatiently for the next full length book to arrive!

Definitely recommended to those already reading the series and as an introduction story into the world too!

This short has the time-jumping narrative style characteristic of the Children series for which it is a prequel. Some people might find it a bit annoying or hard to follow, but I think it adds to the tension of the story, and allows the reader to try to piece together what Berulan did in order to achieve his goal.

Berulan is a great character, and I'm glad that we get more of an insight into his motivations and personality in this work.

I think this short story works well for both fans of the Children series as well as an introduction to the series, since there's some small mentions about the dead gods and how they affect the world. As well as the aforementioned introduction to the narrative style, although this piece stays exclusively within Berulan's head, and in the main series we get a few other points of view.

The author sent me a copy of the short story to review.

Not as good as I'd hoped

I had really planned on liking this story. It was written as a prelude to the The Children trilogy (Godless and Leviathan's Blood so far) and the ideas behind this series are very interesting to me. But this novella left me cold. The pacing of the story was fairly slow and was, overall, quite difficult to comprehend. The denouement of the tale demanded that the series of events leading to it took place in a very exact location. How the hero pulled this off is still a mystery to me.
