Lost in Space
One lone astronaut One lost space traveler Two ships passing in the night
Nivea a lone astronaut is forced to make hard choices and has to accept things she would have never imagined to be possible as reality. Meg a lost space traveler from another planet trying to get home. The two happen to cross paths as their ships drift by each other.
Excerpt: Never did Nivea truly know quiet until she knew the silence of space. She hadn’t heard another voice in days. At least, she thought it was days. Maybe it had only been hours. Minutes? Maybe she was already going insane. She knew that she would probably be ordered into therapy once she got home.
If she got home.
She wouldn’t deny that she needed the sessions. She wouldn’t even try to pretend she was okay during the psych evaluation. But she needed to pretend she was okay right now. For her own sake, she needed to pretend she didn’t see that mirage in the corner of her eye.
“Imagination to Defiance Labs, Imagination to Defiance Labs…” she said into a microphone. “Please, someone… anyone, speak to me. If someone is listening… I’ve been trying for hours. I see another ship out of the corner of my eye. I keep seeing it. I know it isn’t real. I’m going to die out here.”
Hello, my name is Dylan Keefer I'm a web designer / developer by day and a writer by night. I’m basically a modern day superhero using code and words to breathe creativity into reality. On a more serious note, I have been writing from a very young age and have always been pursuing the dream of writing professionally everything I do is in pursuit of that dream. I write light-hearted and dark themed stories as well as across multiple genres. My stories If you like things involving psychological struggles or moral dilemmas of the human condition, chances are my stories are going to be of interest to you no matter what tone or genre they happen to be.
Lost in Space by Dylan Keefer is a short story of two women traveling through space. Nivea is an astronaut who has been alone with no contact from anyone on Earth for nearly a week, ever since her companion Jack died in his sleep. Meg is a space traveler from another planet who is trying to get home after escaping from the man she had been going to marry.
Feeling she may be losing her mind from lack of contact with anyone, Nivea is shocked to see a ship drawing closer to her and even more shocked when someone disembarks and bangs on the door to her ship. Tentatively, she dons her space suit and opens the door to find Meg standing there.
The friendship between Nivea and Meg comes across really nicely, although they have only just met they see each others vulnerabilities and are both quick to trust each other. One thing I loved about this book was the impact of the kindness shown by the characters. An act of kindness shown by Nivea, by Meg, and the people around them has a major effect on the way things play out. Lost in Space is short and sweet, and that is one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much.
"Lost in Space" is a quick read and I thought I wouldn't like it because it was short but I was wrong. I very much enjoyed it.
The story reached a resolution of sorts but there are lots of opportunities for continuation so I am hoping the author already has written more about these characters or will do so in the future.
Sex: None Language: One instance of "damn" and one of "hell" Violence: One person is choked as punishment. One person is killed but no description other than it happened. Both instances are presented as "bad". Religion: None
So much happening and so many details missing. I wanted to really like this story but by the time she got back to Jiom's ship; I was confused and lost interest.
