As for me, halfway through a successful career in technical writing, marketing, and sales, along with having four beautiful children, I veered into fiction. For The Scottsdale Series, I tried to combine my love of the desert, derived from sixteen years of living in Arizona, with my appreciation of the modern romantic detective story. I hope you like the results!
Thanks to all for the great comments and questions. As always, I'd love to hear from you.
I live in Scottsdale and couldn't pass these up. I just finished book 1 of 5 and I'm enamored! Please read these they are delightful. It's kinda "trashy" in a really fun way and I don't mean poor quality. It's competently written and the plot is pretty interesting/well thought out.
Things I loved: the POV MC Laura makes a lot of wacky decisions and says weird stuff and then sometimes you get to hear her immediately reflect on it or regret it through her thoughts or after what follows and that makes her seem really real despite her odd choices; the characters are all super horny which is hilarious; the detailed geographical descriptions are just *chef's kiss* if you live in Scottsdale, you can really place yourself in the story (and I doubt this was intentional but it sort of adds another layer of mystery when the venues she's describing don't match what you know is there which is a little bonus); Jackson Reno... just that name, for a cop, it tickles me. And the description of him getting stares in his Aloha shirt and blue jeans from Scottsdale women at the resort... I laughed out loud because I could picture it so clearly. I'm here for it.
Things I didn't: the Max kiss... I ship Laura/Max over Laura/Reno so far hahaha but it was just so much a thing that wouldn't play out that way ever and there are so many other ways to frame irresistible attraction and a spontaneous kiss that I just couldn't get over it; Laura was a little judgy about the Dominatrix's clients like girl let people be freaky bahaha.
This review covers the first five books in this series and which are included in this anthology.
What can I say? These books are just plain fun, and I highly recommend them. I spent 12+ years in southern Arizona so the descriptions of the heat, cities, vegetation and food all recall memories to me. They certainly are correct.
Laura Black and her friends, boyfriends, and clients are deftly handled by the author, and the plotlines for each book are unique enough to keep my attention without having to burn up brain cells. I look forward to Book Six and Seven with a certain amount of smug glee, but I am not quite sure why. I hope you join me.
This series is mixed for me. Books 1 = 4 stars, book 2 = 5 stars, book 3 = 4 stars, books 4 & 5 = 3 stars. I love the characters, the writing, the suspense and the action. Some of the story lines are hard for me to enjoy. I will re-read the ones I enjoy as I often do with my books.
Laura Black is the new Stefanie Plum. Loved her antics and uncanny knack for always finding trouble. Her relationships with her girl friends was funny and endearing. We all need a Sophie and a Gina in our lives. I highly recommend this series. Can’t wait to see what Laura gets into next.
I liked the Book 1 and they just continued to get better. A feisty heroine, old friends and a wealth of new ones added each book. I like how all of the chars and action continue to intertwine, yet there’s enough repetition in the books that all can stand alone. Loved the series
I really enjoyed all five of these books. Each book has a lot of twist and turns. You do not need to read all five books. Each book is stand alone book. There is just the right amount of everything to make these good reads.
I purchased this series on advise of a friend. There were lots of plot twists and some romantic teasers over the first four books. I read this over the summer alternating other books in different genres. Overall a good buy.
