Indigo Road by RJ Jones is a hidden little gem that flew under the radar. After reading Blueprint by her, I told myself I'd try another book by this author and ran across this .99 cent book. This story contained multiple aspects I enjoy reading.

-Best friends to lovers
-Low angst
-Self-discovery
-A road trip
-Banter
and
-A strong HFN

If you want to get a lost in a sweet romance, then give this one a go- IT'S ONLY .99 CENTS! I would've happily paid more for this. 4.5 Stars!

BR, January 7th with Paul.

* 4 Hey. Horse. stars*

Very nice road-trip story. I love these kind of stories.

About two graduated guys taking a year off to travel the roads of America in a Indigo Volkswagen Van.

“We’ve had this conversation already.” Haven’t we?
“No, we haven’t.”
“Are you sure?”
“Josh.” Alex sighed. “I’d know if I had already asked you to live with me.”
“Oh. Maybe I thought it was a given. Maybe I dreamt it. You know, we’ve spent all this time together, sleeping, traveling, exploring… fucking.”
I winked. “I just thought we would. I can’t imagine going to bed and not having you with me.”

Gift from Paul!

Best friends Alex & Josh have just graduated from college. And are excited that the 1 year road trip which they have been planning and saving up for quite some time will finally become a reality. Anxious to get the show on the road, they depart a day early and set on an adventure that not only gave them the opportunity to make new memories and experiences, but also the opportunity for new feelings.

Road trip, friends to lovers was cute! Thank you Paul for the gift! :-*

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would! I wish the author had done a few things differently but overall, it was a very enjoyable low angst friends to lovers road trip romance.

Sidenote: I really appreciate that the story's indigo theme was incorporated in the cover and I also love that Maude (the van) was included in the cover, since she's basically a third main character.

Josh and Alex have just graduated university and they've spent years saving up money to do a one year road trip across the US. As every reader would know, they start out as friends but fall in love along the way. There's nothing new or surprising in the story but there didn't need to be. It's meant to be a simple, low angst romance and the author did a relatively good job pulling that off.

I did enjoy the progression of the romance and the will-they-won't-they wasn't dragged out just to heighten the tension. The boys get together at and things mostly go smoothly. I could have done with fewer smut scenes since I felt some of them were repetitive and felt like filler, but I liked that the boys took things slow and we got to see the progression of their sexual relationship over time.

I also appreciated that the author tried to include lots of different road trip conflicts. There was a good mix of sightseeing scenes where the author focused on the states that offer special scenery (ex. sedimentary rock formations in Arizona/Utah, the coast in California, wide open farm country in Montana, tropical vegetation in Florida) and higher intensity scenes that showcased things that could go wrong on a road trip . In particular, I loved the two hurt-comfort scenarios that were included - . Like with the smut scenes, most of these scenes were enjoyable but some were much longer than necessary. The worst examples of this was when the boys spend time working on a ranch in both Montana and later Texas. Not only were those scenes overly detailed, boring and had the boys working apart for days at a time but the author repeated this arc twice for some reason. I love ranching romances but I don't want MCs spending multiple chapters on a ranch when I'm reading a road trip romance.

I ended up wishing the author had gone a bit further with their creativity and added a bit more flavor into the story. Many of the conflict scenes were good but they were often much shorter than the repetitive smut scenes and the author could have squeezed out more conflict and angst from those scenarios before moving onto other things. There was also tons of potential for other conflict that the author could have touched on but chose not to. Overall, I did enjoy this low angst friends to lovers romance but I wish the author had upped the intensity and variety a bit more to make it a true winner.

This was a great GFY book. This is the third or fourth "road trip" book that I've read and I wasn't expecting much different from this one, but I was pleasantly surprised. This story wasn't a "visit and check off the landmark" kind of book, the focus was on the journey together. A page turner that will keep you interested till the end. A beautifully written, best friends to lovers story. And check out that beautiful cover!

***2.5 Stars***

This is such a hard book for me to rate.

It kept my interest, but I wasn't invested in the characters. Does that make sense? It's kind of like I was reading for the sake of reading. No emotional connection to anything going on in the story but I still wanted to see how things would play out.

The dialogue was awkward, the emotional evolution of Josh and Alex's relationship was awkward, and the sex (especially the kinky-lite inclusion and Josh's need to keep mentioning that Alex was kinky) was awkward.

It's almost as though I kept waiting for some spark to ignite. Spoiler alert: It never happened.

Review @ Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Bored is not even the word to describe how I felt by this story. I didn't connect one time to these characters. For me it was no highs or lows, just straight line from beginning to end. Neither character made an impact to me in the story. I just felt like a passenger on a road trip around the country with them. Actually these two felt like brothers to me. I didn't get the friends to lovers vibe at all. If anything if they've claimed to be friends as long as they have then this situation should have happened differently.

I didn't buy Josh's come to Jesus moment about his sexuality. Not if he claimed to be this "big man towards the ladies". I'm not a gay man, so I'm unsure if it happens like this, but his coming to terms with his sexuality was unbelievable for me. I would be okay if he never questioned it if we had some sort of past on liking guys. It seemed sporadic at best. I don't buy into Alex's character as well. He had this hot/cold demeanor that I'm really not sure what's the true him. Other issues were their physical descriptions that seemed so similar as we can see from the cover. Besides the height issue, and the less blonde hair again I felt like I was reading about two brothers. It never gained momentum to me. I felt like the pacing was stagnant throughout the story. Some of the plot seemed random. A couple of the issues in the story I felt like it could have made some ground but it needed to be acted on.

All in all, this was a complete miss for me. I really do like the author's previous work so I'd definitely read more from her, I just did not care for this one.

Joshua Simpson and Alex Maybury have been best friends for just about forever. They’ve just graduated Purdue University. In Indigo Road, the two friends take a year off and travel the United States in an indigo VW they call Maude, before they settle into work life. Along the way they meet many interesting people, situations and discover much about themselves and each other. This story is told in first person through Josh’s eyes.

I want to give it more than 5 stars!!

After graduating college Josh and Alex head off on a year long road trip across the country together. They pile into their (new to them), Indigo colored VW van and head west. The best friends begin their journey at home in Fort Wayne, Indiana and head for California. Along the way Josh starts to have romantic feelings for Alex. Will Josh and Alex be brave enough to make the move from friends to lovers?

I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book!! I adored Josh and Alex. They were both sweet, caring and fun loving. Their relationship felt natural and I loved the back and forth banter between them. Their story was amazing and as a couple they just fit together perfectly. The chemistry was out of this world and the sex was passionate and hot, yet sweet and loving.

I loved traveling the country with them on their adventure. The story flowed well and I was never bored. This book held me captivated from the moment I opened it. I. Couldn't. Put. It. Down!!!

I know 2015 is almost over, but I can honestly say this has been one of my favorites, and it will definitely be a re-read for me down the road!!

Highly recommended!!

A new Australian author to me, and a US road trip story in an ancient VW camper van. Two guys Josh and Alex, besties since forever, who'd just graduated from college and who wanted to escape the snow in Fort Wayne Indiana. They'd been planning a road trip for a while, but had no idea their relationship would turn into a whole lot more. The trip was not without its problems either...

I would've much preferred a dual POV instead of looking at everything from Josh's POV, and I know this is fiction, but I wasn't sure about the Dude Ranch in Montana and them just accepting temporary help from a couple of complete strangers....surely they'd have had a specialist agency they would call?? Anyhoo, minor niggle and overall a nice, mainly angst-free read. 4 stars from me.

This is a perfect story! Slow burn friends to lovers, hot sex but not too much of it, happening over the course of a year but neither slow moving or too speedy over the deepening of the relationship. Absolutely lovely! Why have I only read one other book by this author? I must have gotten sidetracked somewhere in the past two years since I read Into the Blue!

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

For the most part, this story is easy and if you like a love story with little angst and two guys just figuring it out, getting it together, and falling in love, this is a great choice for that.
The story is told solely from Josh’s POV and he’s more on the quiet and sensitive side. He’s not a big planner, but Alex has their trip fully scheduled while keeping track of expenses. Josh is completely thrown by his feelings for Alex, but although he’s never been with or had thoughts about men, he’s fairly okay with this new development. There is more of an in the moment feel to the book as the story line concerns their present relationship and what’s happening right then. Although the guys are on the road and have a few adventures along the way, the story is primarily about their growing relationship. Alex is a bit more of a mystery throughout the book as we don’t get any insight into his thoughts and it is shown there is something going on with him as he needs to take breaks from Josh on occasion and takes mysterious phone calls.

Once their feelings do come to light it is a slow, natural slide toward each other with a few well-placed prompts. It’s exactly as if they were always supposed to just be together. The angst is primarily external and designed to bring them closer together, but two particular episodes were too similar in nature for me.

When a review for this book popped up on my feed I read it then immediately read the blurb and I was sold. I wanted a low angst, heavy romance with some heat. For the most part the story was all of those things and I enjoyed it. But it just didn't have anything that stood out or anything memorable about it.

The beginning was good but uneventful as I got to know Josh and Alex. As I kept reading though the story started to remind me a lot of another best friends road trip story that I'd read and didn't care much for. I tried to push that away but the more I read the more it bothered me. Then I remembered a big scene from the other book. It was one that pissed me off royally and I knew that same thing was about to happen here. And sure enough a few chapters later it did. I will say that this author handled that scenario better than the other author in my opinion. So in the end I enjoyed this book a bit more than the other one but there just wasn't anything original or memorable about it. Even the travel blog that led to a job was the same or similar to the other story.

Final verdict: started strong, held it's own without much beyond hot sex, then turned predictable and unremarkable. Good but not great.

For about 4/5 of this book I was pretty happy. It was a cute story about road-tripping and falling in love. Sure some of the things that happen to the two were a bit over the top, but it was mostly in a shrug your shoulders kind of way. It was a very laid-back kind of book.

Which is a problem because the author got close to the end, realized they had absolutely no climax in the offing, and decided to play soap-opera with their story. While I won't say exactly what happened, it was ridiculous and it pissed me off. The climax of the story literally comes out of nowhere and it throws everything off. I was about two seconds away from just DNFing right there (and would have if I didn't need to finish the damn book for other reasons). That whole "well there is no climax so we are was a bit stupid. And now I am all rage-y again. *sigh*

So while I enjoyed most of this book, the ending kinda fucked that up, and I can say pretty confidently that I'll never read this book again. It wasn't a bad book, but it was definitely a one-and-done.

ARC REVIEW

Josh and Alex have graduated and are now heading off on a road tour of US, there plan is to avoid snow for a year, enjoy their freedom and have a great adventure.

They're traveling in a VW van that has been converted into a travelling van, it's s beautiful indigo colour and they name her Maude.

This book is an addictive read, you won't want to put it down, I didn't want to!

Josh and Alex are just friends but, Josh has had twinges in parts before through being near Alex, but he pushes them feelings aside.

This is a story of discovery and learning and it's beautiful watching these two get closer and eventually become lovers, even then they're on a learning curve and it is sweet and sexy when they get together.

Their journey isn't all about love, there're mishaps and things that could mean trouble mixed in.

I really loved the realism of this story, the characters were perfectly normal people falling in love, stumbling through the process at times with worries and an innocent feel to them, well innocent for a little while then things got fun.

A wonderful friends to lovers MM read.

Recommended read.

3 'horse' stars!

Not a bad story, but it just felt flat to me. I didn't connect with Josh and Alex and I really wished we could have two POV instead of one. The road trip was the thing that had me interested but also that was...a bit plain.
Overal an average book although I really loved the playful part of Alex and the GFY story in it!

3.5 to 4 stars. Not a huge fan of the cover and the transitions or passing of time between scenes was rushed or jarring or something. But the best friends to lovers felt realistic. Typical non-communicative guy misunderstandings or irritation, road trip run ins and coming out to families made it a story that I wanted to continue. Decent read.

LOVED IT !!!
This is a story about two best friends who take a year off to find themselves… and end up finding each other.
It has a great plot with the perfect balance of sentiment and sizzle.
This is definitely one of those books I'll re-read when I need a feel-good fix.

Mostly enjoyable tale of two best friends, Alex and Josh, who discover their true sexuality and each other on a drive around the country. I’m glad both of them began referring to themselves as either bi or gay because, frankly, the whole gay-for-you trope is a bunch of nonsense. It was also somewhat unbelievable that Josh went from straight to questioning to way-out-there kinky gay. Just how deep was his closet? Most of their adventures as they travelled were relatively mild. Of the bad experiences, LA made some sense, Alabama was pushing it, and Orlando was a bit over-the-top. But I liked that they got a strong HFN or HEA (depending on how you interpret it).
Overall, the writing and editing are well done and there are only a slight few minor mistakes. One mistake that stood out for me was during their time in Florida. They had been driving the coast towards Daytona and over to Orlando (which means they are on the Altantic; i.e., East, coast) with plans to “head east to Tampa...before heading back to the west coast.” Since they had been planning on South Beach, which is Miami, I’m guessing that’s what the author meant because if you’re going east to get to Tampa, then you are in the Gulf of Mexico (Tampa is on the Gulf; i.e., west coast of Florida.

Very cute new adult with some lovely emotional depth... and to my surprise, some downright dirty smexy with a dash of kink. Josh and Alex have been best friends since middle school and have just graduated college. Before embarking on "adulting" and getting a job, they plan to go on a road trip through the US. I really enjoyed the author's knowledge of the places they visited and loved the titles of each chapter. Josh and Alex were good together and had distinct voices. So I was expecting the usual new adult fare - angst about adulthood, drama and emotion about sexual identity and a lovely bit of smexy - WELL, these guys were down and dirty and Alex and his bag of "toys" just floored me. What they got up to in the back of Maude just made me squirm. Strong writing, good action, engaging characters. My only quibble - in a book where most of the action and dialogue is focused on the two MCs for 90% of the book, I would have liked to have gotten into Alex's head. The book is told from Josh's POV. Still this was quite a treat and totally enjoyed it.

A best friends road trip, not exactly eventful, if we forget the GFY* discovery. So to alter the course of a bit of a flat story we get a melodrama in the end .

* I know plenty of people who came late to the realisation they were gay/lesbian/trans*, but all of them had had some hint of this before.

Une romance toute mignonne, douce et pleine de tendresse. Les personnages sont très touchants et attachants. On prend énormément de plaisir à voir leur relation évoluer de l'amitié à l'amour, les voir se redécouvrir.
