Claire Dowson is focused on her career as an NYPD detective and avoids media attention. She gets enough slack at work for being the mayor's daughter, she doesn't need anything more. But when her father announces his Senate run, her mother asks for one meeting with the fixers team, and Claire, against her better judgment, gives in.
He's not ready to watch her leave.
Nate Urban is a fixer for the New York's rich and powerful, and after years in the business, he's a hard man to surprise. But when the client's daughter comes into the office for consultation on what was supposed to be an easy case, he's thrown completely off balance. The last thing on his mind is his job.
The mutual attraction makes the risk seem worth taking, but they're not the only players in this game.
This book is written by a friend, but my review contains only my own opinions.
A promising start to a new series of fluffy, light-hearted romance novels (novellas?). The romance joins a cop from a rich political family with a fixer whose firm is hired by her father's campaign. That kind of set-up made me expect some drama in the relationship, possibly with a male protag who is at least a little sleazy - and instead this was a sweet story about falling in love and dealing with issues. The characters are adorable, and - in the case of the female protagonist especially - well developed (and I really liked how much sense her behaviour made, considering her issues). The fact that the male protagonist is not a jerk in the slightest was refreshing and fun. The progression of their relationship is nice and well paced. The only complaint I would have is that there are rifles hanging on walls that never quite get to be fired - for instance the fact that the heroine's job is in direct conflict with that of the hero (the cops hate the fixers), and so it seems clearly set up that her colleagues would give her hell for that romantic choice, and yet there's no follow-up. In general I think the story would have benefitted from more space for developing the story, getting more meat and space for all of it, but the brevity has its value. It's a comfort read, and I look forward to the next book.
Although this book terrible, it wasn't all that great either. I don't know how to explain it but I just couldn't get into it. I finished reading it but it was lacking something and I'm just not sure what it is. It's a quick read and maybe that's why. It just wasn't long enough to go into the debt of the story.
More like a 2.5, but the writing was solid so I'll round up. I really enjoyed the prequel story to this one, but unfortunately this didn't deliver the goods. The characters didn't have time to get any depth, and the plot was pretty weak. It needed the heroine to confront her dad. The next in the series has one of my favourite tropes though, so I may give it one more chance.
Liked this one even more than I did the prequel. Thought the romance was a lot better developed and paced for the length of these stories. My only thing is I wish we had gotten at least a little explanation as to why Claire and her dad don’t get along so much other than he’s self centered. Like I wish we had gotten maybe like one back story that was the turning point in their relationship. Would’ve made the final scene at the ball feel less like Claire was just being over dramatic.
Although this is a short story, I really enjoyed reading. The subject matter of a fixer was new and interesting to me and I loved the chemistry between Nate and Claire. They were such nice human beings and I was rooting for their relationship. A very enjoyable, sexy read.
I didn't care much for this book, or anything about it. It wasn't horrible, I just didn't think it was very good. All the characters were flat & one-dimensional. Nothing made me care for anyone.
Great...a good read with a fast paced romance.....the main characters a detective and a fixer are adorable and simple together....read to see what trouble these two find on their road to happiness...
A lady cop with daddy issues? Well it almost seems like a TV show. Oh I think it was. Anyway, I feel that overall that the romance was a bit rushed in this book and even a bit forced. As a "fixer" most get a bad rap but Nate is not "mobbed up" so Claire gives him a bit of a hard time. But her father is another issue together. Claire also seems to have trust issues. Really? A cop with trust issues? Mmm, not that far of a stretch there. There are a few steamy pages to get you going. But even the ending left nothing for me. I am hoping the next book which is 2.99 is going to be worth it. This book is worth the .99 but not much more. For me it is closer to a 3.5 than a 4 star. OH...WHAT'S WITH THE TITLE? WHAT RULES???
Really enjoyed Nate and Claire's story! And goodness, wasn't Nate a sex God! Yummo! By Your Rules was an engaging short and easy read. Very much look forward to reading more from Ally!
Really enjoying this cute low angst series. Glad it focuses on the couple and doesn't get into the weeds on the side story. Can't wait to read the next one.
He comes in to fix things. Her dad is running for a higher political office. His daughter is in the picture. They go off course and end up dating and they hit it off very well. But then comes the suspense, excitement. I recommend it. I was given a review copy and voluntarily review it.
Mayor Richard Dowson (husband/father) plans on running for the senate. Manhattan, NY. He hired Nathaniel “Nate” Urban (lawyer, Foster, Young, & Urban) to oversee the legal issues. Detective Claire Dowson (daughter, NYPD, major crimes divsion) came in for some advice also. Things took a turn & her Nate started going out.
The sex was great also.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A fairly well written legal erotic (novella) book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great legal erotic movie, or better yet a paid-per-view mini TV series. To be continued. It was just OK for me so I will rate it at 4/5 stars.
