Alasdair Connery has seen a lot in ten thousand years.
He’s the first of his kind; the father of all nightwalkers. Together with his trusted assistant Edgar, he trolls for victims to feed from at his time of blood lust. When he’s invited to a wedding, he meets his perfect choices—a married couple. Bruce and Jules have their own sets of insecurities and secrets. She hides a wealth of insecurities under a shield of bravado, and Bruce? He hides the fact that he can’t stop thinking about the love of his life—his college flame Dr. Jeffrey Bayfield. With Alasdair’s powers of seduction working a little too well, he finds that both of them are growing somewhat dependent on him.
Growing increasingly annoyed at their emotional baggage, some of which he is responsible for, he’s willing to put up with their games for a short time, but something has to happen before his blood fever is over for another fifty years and he has to go back to donors once again, unable to kill humans for their red gift. He rather likes the killing part.
And what is he going to do about Edgar’s own growing feelings for him?

I'm a child of the Sixties--born and raised in Southern California. I escaped that craziness, and made my own brand of crazy in Colorado--where my husband of 46 years and I raised three lovely daughters and helped with six grandchildren. I have a soft spot for LGBT issues (naturally) and zero tolerance for blind hatred.

I never warmed to this overlong and sanctimonious story. The ancient vampire makes Ann Rice's characters look deep and well-rounded by contrast (witness this little gem of monologuing: "he remembered his conversation with Bruce, telling him about the person he loved. How could he tell Edgar when he was barely able to admit it to himself?  When would he be sure of being able to make him like he was?  It wouldn't matter if he were ever able to make love again, or kill human victims again; he cared about none of that. If he could make Edgar his equal for eternity, the rest was unimportant. He would never stop trying to find a way"), the pair of human males and the female Jules behave as so many self-absorbed asshats, the plot is all over the place (not so much complex or even convoluted as feeble and contrived), and do not get me started on the writing. Neither descriptive nor evocative, it skims on the surface of the entirely too many things the book crosses into.

Kathy Griffith "The Ancient" 5 stars!
From the very beginning of the story I was emotionally captivated by the dialogue, and when Bruce and Jules met Alasdair, mesmerized sitting at the same table trying hard not to overhear their conversation and twitched when Alasdair spoke. And they danced. I felt as if an observer when he and Jules danced, but felt myself in his arms as if Alasdair was holding me instead of Bruce. I was as aroused as each of them were.
My mouth dropped open when reading Alasdair’s email to Bruce, and my eyes lingered on the page. I had to re-read the email three times before I could turn the page.
So complex and vivid, the emerging desires instilled into Jules and Bruce’s minds. When Alasdair provoked the thoughts of Bruce and his childhood memories, what a rush of an experience.
Imaginative, detailed scene setting, history recording and explosive feeling abound while already captivated being caught within my own imagination living inside the story. I could not put this book down. I was frustrated when sleep and work interfered.
Best book quote ever: “Race you to the shower.” He smiled, touching himself. “How about brace yourself in the shower?” Griffith, Kathy (2015-02-25). The Ancient (Kindle Locations 1897-1899). . Kindle Edition.
Imaginative, complex and vivid... Well written. Thank you!

A rush of blood, to all the right places … Kathy Griffith’s THE ANCIENT is a mesmerizing journey into the realm of vampire and human interface. The story is complex, yet it unravels with grace and with a kind of sexy inevitability that held me spellbound.

You will meet Alisdair, the Ancient, the nightwalker. And you will not forget those whose lives he touches, almost as memorable and just as nicely crafted: the lovers Jeffrey and Bruce, the special friend Edgar, the curiously vulnerable and sympathetic Jules …

The story is intricate and well woven, leading to a climax and dénouement that I will not spoil, but I will say that I look forward to another journey into Griffith’s remarkable universe.

A well-crafted tale of vampire and human lust, longing, and love.

This was one of the longest, most complex stories I have ever read. I'm not a fan of long m/m romance books because I feel most romance stories can be told within 250 pages max. This story was so much more than a romance novel. I'm still processing what I read and cannot figure out how to describe what I read. This was the best romance novel I've read focused on vampires and the modern world. One issue I did have was breaks between screens. It would go from Julia at home and then the next line would be about Jeffrey. I was able to follow along fine but it would have been nice to have that clear separation.
