Aaron hadn’t been caught by surprise by the early arrival of the Nebraska blizzard in November, so after hunkering down for the night to wait out the snow and gale-like winds, he set out in the predawn to resume his trek across the plains to get to his ranch. While he may not have been surprised by the storm, he was soon stunned by what he discovered on the frozen ground southwest of Scotts Bluff.

Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.

The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.

As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.

My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"

Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.

I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)

"And what did the doctor say?"

"I'll ask him when we get back."

"Yes, you will."

I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.

Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.

So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.

The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.

Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.

Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.

Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.

They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.

It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.

They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

Excellent Storyline

Different from the standard themes and characters by CJ Petit, this story retained my interest all the way through. It begins with a horrifying situation, and that got my full attention. But, as usual the author created characters with hidden strengths and enough love to turn disaster into a while new life. I particularly enjoyed the positive power of gossip. Gotta remember that one. Maybe I could pull a rabbit out of a hat with some storytelling of my own when called for.

ORPHANed PEOPLE, RANCH LIFE, GUNS

Bringing 4 STARS of gut punching emotional disruption & heart affections this after the Civil War Old West Era drama takes place on the Nebraska Plains. Ranch owner homesteader Aaron & 12 yr son lived 6 hrs out of town. They had been without a woman's influence for 7 yes since his wife had died. It was cold with heavy snow in a blizzard, Aaron on his way home from town saw a shadow on the plain that turned out to be a girl & boy freezing in a wagon without enuff covers to keep warm all alone, they asked him to find their mother. Mary, he found barely alive & almost to late with frostbite. He saved the 3 after finding out they had been purposely abandoned in that blizzard in a broken wagon by her abusive 2nd husband of 2 yrs. Aaron invited them to live at his ranch in safety. Several weeks later Aaron made the long trip to town roughly 20 miles out there is a small area of trees near a river bend and he thought he saw movement; therefore since he was on alert of a sniper or other Aaron sent shots around the tree area. He was surprised when he found a dirty 7 yr girl there & pretty hungry at that. His heart was affected when she said her Mother had told her to get out of her house & stay gone, panicked when peach juice dripped, and said she hoped her ugliness wasn't that bad. Her Mother had told her she was so ugly people didn't want to see her He took the little girl to his ranch to live with the rest of the ORPHANed family. Mary's husband being violent was taught to shoot & started wearing a gunbelt. Aaron & Mary, had to wait for a year to petion for a divorce due to abandonedment. Of course other life like Indians came by and bought almost his whole 300 head herd cows but they would bring some kind of payment back later when others brought it to them but now their women & children were starving & needed feeding. It is an amazing thing to read about how they arrived at the ranch and Aaron's reaction. It's even more amazing to see what they returned later on months later as payment. This gives several different interesting areas of pleasing reading in the book & made me smile plus laugh out loud, too. Now I will just say there is a few places I out loud cheered on Alice & Mary, this woman & her daughter have sand. Aaron is a man with sand or grit who has a great capacity to love, to help others, and to do good in general but doesn't shy from taking action or taking care of people he needs too. My heart went out to Martha, how can a 7 yr go 20 miles in the dark ? A mother telling a child she is so ugly people don't want to look at you then in winter tell her to leave the house is beyond sad; yet maybe Martha was lucky to not be at home on the unfortunate event night. My the strange happenings with the distance of miles & hours seem mysterious due to the connections to them living at the ranch. Great exciting experience!

LOVE HAS NO BOUNDS

Abused women and children who in one case the Mother didn't want her own child, said the little girl was like a rock around her neck. Her mother who sold her body to any man felt the kid was a hindrance to the men who visited her. Little girl runs away and no one missed her..very sad.
The woman in this story had bad luck, misfortune all rolled up in one George Davenport, the cad, scoundrel who abandoned his family on the flat lands of Nebraska twenty miles from the nearest town and dang it, he did it in a snow storm.
If you've read any stories by this author the plot all deal with broken hearts, death of a wife or possibly a mail order bride left waiting at the stage drop off for her intended husband who mysteriously never shows.
The endings are happy. I know you have to deal with realty, but there are some really mean spirited, black hearted individuals who care only about themselves and the narcissistic attitudes of both men and women. This author touches upon all negative energies that befalls mankind and how we coped with them.
I think everyone who reads this author's books will enjoy them..

This is the story of Aaron and Mary and their children and what happened with Mary's soon to be ex-husband abusive and violent

We meet Mary as her husband is leaving her in the middle of a blizzard and her two children with the wagon with the broken axle and one mule. He rides back in a zigzag pattern looking for her hoping that he'll find her and he does Mary is almost Frozen but Aaron warms her up and helps her get up on his horse and rides with her back to the children. He takes out a tarp puts it over the top of their heads build the fire inside on the ground and it starts to heat up and bring life back to the three of them. He fixes them food as well they look hungry well they are eating and getting better he takes a look under the wagon to see if perhaps there's another axle there isn't but he has one at home. Meanwhile marries mean violent husband has taken off on the mule and written as far as a shack he found and he climbed in and got somewhat warmer in the bitter cold. He doesn't like his wife and he doesn't like children at all and why he ever married them was just for their money and he cleaned them out. Lame

This author apparently doesn't understand how a real conversation works: people do not repeatedly use the name of the person to whom they are speaking -- it drove me crazy. Too much of this book was repeating previous information. And early on, Aaron states that there was four inches of snowfall, then an hour later, he doesn't think he can find the lost woman because she would be buried in the snow. Widower finds woman and her two children stranded with a broken wagon during a snow storm. Husband abandoned them to save his own life, assuming they would freeze to death and he would be free of them. Widower Aaron takes Mary, Alice and Danny to his ranch where he creates a safe, loving place for them, along with his own son James. Then Aaron finds a runaway Martha on his way to town, brings her into the fold, later learning that her mother died and her father has always been unknown.

A story of danger, fear, strength, chivalry, honor, and love. I won't write a spoiler, but the story revolves around damaged people rebuilding their lives. Characters are well developed, story kept me turning pages, and I've grown to love Petit's stories. He doesn't leave out details, doesn't bore you with minutiae, and finally ends his books with no unresolved issues and a feeling of completion. Looking forward to reading all of Mr. Petit's work.

A wonderful frontier story.

A story of a man with a big heart that protects and teaches his family to survive in New frontier. People were more important than things. The cruelty of some over the weaker sex and children. A wonderful theme of a group that becomes a family, with a lot of love and respect.

Delightful Story

Mr. C. J. has written, for me, one of the best stories of his I've read so far, and I've read over twenty. What's amazing to me is that, even though the genre is the same as well as the area and time frame, the actual stories are different enough that they hold my interest (and I think other readers as well). That's why I'll keep reading them.

Scott's Bluff

I can’t say enough about this author, C.J.Petit. I have read several of his books and they just keep getting better. This one is no exception. This is not your classic ”Shoot’em up western” but a great read nonetheless. Now on to the next great adventure so “Giddy up.”

C J Petit does again.

A little off the norm for a C J Petit book, it is still a wonderful story. Mary is abandoned to freeze to death with two children. Widower Aaron rescued them and with his son cared for them. Love prevails yet Aaron and Mary are handicapped because Mary is still married, and her husband is still in the area.

Promises

Quite a different adventure in this story, yet much of it believable when you seriously consider the timeframe. As in other offerings by Mr. Petit the common theme popping up is for the hero to say "I keep my promises", and in this case it leads to lives being positively changed.

Scott’s Bluff

I loved this story. Although it was one of the first stories by CJ Petit, the theme is essentially the same - honorable, wholesome, integrity and masterful character development. The MC Aaron is a war veteran and believes in law and justice and the importance of women being treated fairly and honorably.

Excellent Story

I love your writing. I don't like the inadvertent name changes and the added words here and there. When the plot is moving it is disconcerting to be forced to stop and figure out who this new person could possibly be.

Still love your writing.

Very good

A recommended read, however, I do not understand why typos are permitted. I FIND TYPOS IN BOOKS TO BE NEEDLESS DISTRACTIONS. It seems authors could take time to do a review proof reading of their work.

Cute book

I just finished Scott's Bluff. It is the best story of all Mr Petit's books I have read. I liked it because there is not as much blood shed. The story was short and sweet and to the point. I really enjoyed it very much.

Happy Family

What a great story of how life was for people finding their true love back in the 1870's. It is amazing how God brings families together who were meant to be together as one family. How surviving life's trials brings these families together.
