The seventh book in this action-packed, wildly original fantasy series by New York Times Bestselling Author Jasmine Walt.
Home from their travels at last, Sunaya and Iannis are confronted with a threat against which even their strongest magic is largely helpless. The very ground under their city is becoming increasingly unstable, and there are disturbing predictions of an impending quake the likes Solantha hasn't seen in centuries.
While their hands are full preparing for disaster, Iannis's most dangerous rival returns to Solantha, intent on finding anything he can use against Iannis. It isn't long before Fenris too is in his crosshairs, his dangerous secret perilously close to being exposed. Sunaya is fiercely determined to protect both her friend, and the man she loves, but will her efforts be enough? With old and new enemies as well as the might of nature ranged against her, one false step or indiscreet word can spell doom for all three of them...
On the edge of my seat with this one! I absolutely loved it like the rest of the series it was fast paced and full of action. I enjoyed meeting new characters and discovering more about our favorites! I can’t wait to see what happens next!
I love this series and the dynamic between Sunaya, Iannis, and Fenris. In this part of the story, Garrett arrives unexpectedly on orders from the minister to follow up on a rumor that after the prison fire and her consequent escape, Thorgana may be hiding out in the city ready to exact her revenge on Sunaya and Iannis and any other innocents who may get in her way. However, Garrett has an ulterior motive in mind that has to do with uncovering the truth about Fenris and possibly trying to lay the blame on Iannis so that he may be arrested for illegal magic and out of the running for next minister and therefore no competition to Garrett. At the same time, a human architect brings to the attention of Sunaya and Iannis that many of the buildings have been not properly followed protocol for earthquake and disaster prevention, at the forefront being the schools and hospital, and there is the probability of a major earthquake in the area in as little as two weeks. While Iannis assigns teams to prepare and strengthen the buildings and evacuate the schools and hospitals that are deemed too dangerous, Sunaya teams up with Garrett to investigate and hopefully locate Thorgana, allowing her to keep him off Fenris's case as much as possible.
I finished this book in one day, less than 24 hours, as it was impossible to put down, as all of Jasmine Walt's books are. She is a very gifted writer with a talent for writing strong characters and worlds. Thank you so much to the author for putting her books on Kindle Unlimited. It is the #1 way to read unlimited books for only $10 a month and definitely worth it for an avid reader like myself!
I was happy to see so much social progress being made, and that a human architect did some of the planning for the earthquake preparation. There was also just the right amount of romance. Garrett was a pain in the butt, but even he showed compassion in the end for his coworker. And I felt so sad for Fenris!!!
One of my favorite quotes: "You may be wiser and less hotheaded than the girl who was dragged to my audience chamber in chains, but your essential self has not changed, Sunaya. You still burn with all the passion and fire that made me fall in love with you."
This one might be my favorite in the series so far. There were an unusual amount of copy editing problems but the story was exceptional and the set up for the potential new arc is exciting.
Another engaging, action packed addition to the Baine Chronicles!
I love all of these books! They're super fun and quick to read. Lots of action and heroism from our fave characters. Love this series and can't wait to see what's next!
This book was just....meh. At least it's not formulaic like the previous versions, but it just seems a little lacking. It wraps up a bunch of things, but what I wanted most about their relationship is kind of thrown to the side. Also I'm kind of annoyed that It feels like a cop out to me, and just left me super frustrated.
Oh my goodness! I just finished reading the ARC of Scorched by Magic and I can honestly say it is my favorite so far!! I laughed out loud and even cried a few tears but I literally could not put it down. I received it about 3 hours ago and it is fantastic! Whatever you do, don't miss out on Sunaya's latest adventure.
I just finished Scorched by Magic, and now I'm ready for more. Did Noria escape the mine cave in. What about Annia and her strange new power presence. Will Iannis and Sunaya ever get married and will they hear from Fenris. So much to learn and more story to tell. Get busy, Jasmine, I need book 8 .
Death threats and attempts, earthquakes, falling buildings, subterfuge, and resistance members makes for an interesting story. I did not expect the downfall of the resistance benefactor to turn out like it did. Good plot and story development and delivery.
I truly can't say enough good things about this series, and I consistently and eagerly am always looking forward to a new installment! Ms. Walt has created a fascinating and yet somehow familiar world, with interesting and well-developed characters.
It takes a disaster like an earthquake to unite people. Families and friends are lost. All races will learn to live together and get along. I recommend this book. I recommend all books by this author.
Scorched by Magic was awesome to read. I loved how the author writes her characters with lots of attitude and snark. My favorite characters are Sunaya Baine, Fenris (Fen for short) and Lord Iannis - Chief Mage of Canalo. Sunaya is 1/2 shifter(turns into a big black panther) and 1/2 mage and is engaged to the Chief Mage Lord Ianmis. While reading I found many humerus parts and parts that made me break down to tears... But I loved every page. My favorite passage is: Annoyed that he wasn't following, I changed back into my human form, ... Grabbed Iannis by his shoulder. " don't you see?" .... His scent leads away from the city, not toward it, and I know from his memories that he didn't go that way when he first came here. Plus, I don't scent anyone else around, which means..." That he is alive" Iannis said..... This is book 7 and one of my favorites... I loved all of the books but this one was my favorite... Thank you Jasmine Walt for the wonderful adventures that you me on with Sunaya Baine.. I look forward to more to come. So pick it up and give of a go... You will love it
The long awaited end of the series book! Sunaya's adventures have finally led her to a position of power from where she is able to help a lot of people. She is seen coming into her own and working things through even as she feels her old life slipping away. Her new identity while totally dependent on the Chief Mage, is one that she is happy to embrace. The new architect, human no less, seems like the kind of person she will be able to help even as he brings his expertise to solve their latest quake crisis. While this is the last book of the series I have a feeling we may be heading into a spin-off series. After all we want to know what happened to Fenris and also the resolution of the situation at the mines!
This is the seventh book of the Baine Chronicles, and it’s my favorite in the series to date due to the terrific character development by Ms. Walt. Sunaya is adapting to being a mage-shifter, an enforcer, and Iannis’ fiancé. Scorched by Magic introduces some new characters, and marks a change in the series focus from fighting the Resistance to working together in a more egalitarian society. While this may sound peaceful and tranquil, it’s far from it. This book is an emotional rollercoaster. So, buckle up, and enjoy the ride. If you haven’t read the previous novels, please start with “Burned by Magic”, as the storyline builds from one book to the next. I can’t wait for more!
I received an ARC from the author for an honest review.
Sunaya is maturing and gaining more insight of her new role in the need-changing patchwork society of the federation. Her friends get their own adventures, some new secrets and enemies are becoming important allies… For certain purposes only. Sewed between natural disaster and pollical threats this book continue The Baine chronicles. The main orders are still magic, feelings and justice. With the usual speck of thrillers and adventures.
Unique world with diverse culture and locations. I enjoy this series and like the characters. Sunaya is a strong female lead with a sense of fairness and courage to stand up for her beliefs. This story wrapped up the resistance leaders. It also moved So!anthe into a more integrated world due to a disaster. I like the addition of the children as side stories. It opens potential future storylines. This book seemed to wrap the initial series arc and prepares us for future arcs and spinoffs.
Oh, how I did not want to start this book because starting it meant it would be the end. The final installment of the Baine Chronicles is here and, WOW! What a fantastic end to the series! It is always a sign of a great book when your emotions are invested, and this one had me laughing, crying, etc. Sunaya has come a long way since book one, and you can see how she has matured through the series. I highly recommend the entire series!
I hate reviews with spoilers so I'll try to review this one without ruining the book for you. Torring comes to town to hunt down the Benefactor but that's not the only reason he's there. He's out to get Iannis and Fenris. The city is preparing for an earthquake and a new character is introduced. There are a couple of scenes in the aftermath that brought tears to my eyes. I'm just not sure they really have the Benefactor. I think it's someone else.
Here we are at the concluding title in the Baine Chronicles. As I read this, knowing it was the last book, I was both excited and apprehensive because I really didn’t want the series to end. As with all the other titles I’ve read by Ms. Walt, this book was amazingly well-written, the characters were well-drawn, and the action was such that I couldn’t put it down. As I learned the fate of the people (people, not characters, at this point) in this installment, I laughed out loud, and I cried tears of sadness. I think the books aren’t perfect, but how can I not love books that draw so much emotion from me like that? I have to say the book answered many questions but did leave some open, leading me to believe there might be another series with a different protagonist. Let’s hope so because I loved the people (see note above) in the series. If you are a fan of this series, you will love this book. If you haven’t started the series yet, do so; it’s well-worth it! Highly recommend! Thanks to the author for the e-copy which I voluntarily reviewed. This exact review will be posted on both Amazon and Goodreads.
Have loved this series from the start and hopefully it will continue to take me along on the ride. I love all the characters and the ways they interact with each other. Do please start at the beginning it is not to be read as stand alone you would miss out on everything that brought these wonderful people to the choices made we all need a mage inour lives.
Out of the previous books, this one fell a little short in comparison. I'm not sure if it was the premise of the story or the fact that the writing this time read a little lackluster.
Either way, I'm attributing it to this being a bridge book that sets the stage for some future awesomeness in stored for our dear Iannis and Sunaya.
The danger continues in the city and an earthquake is threatening soon, our crew working furiously to prepare. The aftermath is tragic, the death and destruction massive and disheartening because of greed. So much is left to do you can't help but hope there are more books planned to continue the tale.
While I really enjoy all of Jasmine Walt's books, I have to say that this is my favorite by far. Her character development and story telling are excellent. I find myself caring a great deal about what happens to all of these characters. Will definitely be reading Fugitive by Magic next.
This book was awesome. I love a happy ending and this book had it. The roller coaster of emotions throughout this book had me losing sleep because I didn't want to put it down. Sunaya, Iannis, Fenris along with Director Chen and Rylan did everything they could to ensure the safety of all of Solantha. I can't wait to read more about these characters.
