The Inheritance

Rate this book
Ally Bunbury's debut novel opens in the London townhouse of Sofia Tamper, spoilt Hollywood princess, whose momager is hell-bent on generating positive publicity for her protegee in advance of her appearance in Violet Tiger, a much trumpeted new TV series.

To this end, the venue is crammed with beautiful and influential people, none more so than George Wyndham, renowned art dealer, heir to a Tudor mansion in Scotland, and one of the country's most eligible bachelors. Also there, albeit at the insistence of her PR maven boss, is Irish-born Anna Rose whose brief is to rub shoulders with the right people and drum up new business for Winterbottom PR.

Having failed to connect with the jaded and peevish Sofia Tamper, Anna is planning her exit strategy when her bikini strap snaps. And voila! Out of the blue comes the dashing George Wyndham to preserve Anna's modesty with a silk kaftan. Of course the pair fall instantly in love, and Anna duly brings her new beau home to meet her delightfully eccentric parents, Harry and Freddie, at their idyllic Georgian pile in the west of Ireland. They too are charmed by their daughter's new man, as is Mrs B the housekeeper, Bernard the gardener and Dharma, the live-in yogi master. It seems nothing can come between the happy couple.

But back in Scotland, all is not well. George returns home to discover that his estranged father, Robert Wyndham, has sold George's beloved late mother's favourite painting - a Titian - and is busily squandering the proceeds. Furthermore, Sofia Tamper, whose scheming mother Blaire was born and reared in the shadow of the Big House, has wheedled her way into Wyndham senior's affections.

With his inheritance under threat, George is forced to make a choice - one with devastating consequences.

THE INHERITANCE by Ally Bunbury is a well-paced, emotional tale of love, loss, and greed, that will effortlessly pluck at your heartstrings, and make you fall completely into the story. Anna Rose is an Irish girl working hard in London for a PR Queen when she bumps into George Wyndham at a Socialite's party. Together they delve into a beautiful relationship that promises a future that they both crave. But when George's childhood estate, and the only link left to his beloved mother, is threatened, he will be forced to turn his back on Anna, in order to save it. But his decision will have consequences that even he cannot imagine, and as the cast of characters in this tale each struggle to gain control over the craziness in their lives, they will question if it is ever possible to fix the broken memories of the past.

I adored the kaleidoscope of madcap characters in this energetic story, especially Gilda who is a force to be reckoned with and hilarious to boot, but Anna is easily my favourite. Strong, caring, loyal, and humble, Anna faces many harsh trials throughout this novel, but always handles herself with dignity and aplomb. I became completely wrapped up in THE INHERITANCE and found myself laughing out loud and crying throughout because this is a story that has it all - excitement, heartbreak, love, failure, and just that extra something that makes it very special. THE INHERITANCE by Ally Bunbury is the perfect contemporary read for fiction fans everywhere.

I bought this book to read while travelling to Italy last week and I couldn't put it down. Set in the wild world of media and PR, where the characters are created and maintained in larger than life formats, Anna Rose works for the most successful PR icon in London, the brilliant but high maintenance Gilda Winterbottom. At a big bash thrown by a mega-celebrity, Anna meets the man of her dreams, the art dealer George Wyndham. They fall in love and visit their ancestral homes in Scotland and Ireland to meet the respective families. Just as things are getting serious, complications, introduced by the nemesis, budding actress Sophia Tamper, get in the way.

The characters are well developed and entertaining, the writing style is crisp and emotionally charged, and the pace is fast and intriguing. Set in a world of illusions of grandeur, where money, notoriety and sex wield power over tradition and romance, The Inheritance is a plot-twisting first novel packed with wacky characters that will stick with you! They are larger than life and yet supremely humanly flawed. I can't wait to read the sequel!

Delightful read... almost as flash as Jilly Cooper but a bit less vulgar. I'm not in love with George Wyndham but still fun over the top with Sophie as villainess and Gilda as lady boss.
Anna was a strong female character and I loved reading her character. I cried and you'll figure out where.

I loved the description of the country homes. I like that both main characters enjoyed their childhood homes and because of Anna's warmth I picture them in the future at Farley Hall. Oh, right...this is fiction...I get it. Love the ending.

Keep us updated on future books. I realize I read in a day what took you much longer to write.
