Ashlyn Chase has been a registered nurse for 20 years. During those years, she wrote articles for professional journals and a thesis, but eventually, thank goodness, discovered the joy and freedom of writing fiction.

Ashlyn considers herself lucky. Her degree in behavioral sciences is a combination of psychology and sociology, so she has worked with and studied people most of her life. She never has to write out exhaustive character sketches to understand her characters or predict how they will behave. That doesn't mean they don't surprise her. Sometimes they take her on grand unexpected journeys. For her, it gives "character driven novels" a whole new meaning.

Ashlyn has learned to go with the flow. To enjoy the journey is not only one of her writing goals, but also a challenge in life so she tries to follow where the story takes her. As such, she has lived in 17 different places over the years. At last, she's all settled down and comfy in New England.

Is there a grand design or do we decide our own fates? Perhaps if the powers-that-be have a plot, then they also give us the right to revise it. Ashlyn has certainly made detours on her path, but she thinks she's better for it. She's having fun at any rate and hopes that if she enjoys the journey, so will those around her—including her readers.

Who wouldn't love the idea of some flaming passion between a Phoenix and a Dragon? NEVER DARE A DRAGON by Ashlyn Chase takes us back to Boston, the mecca of the paranormal and frequent hang out for Mother Nature, who by the way is learning to have a sense of humor…
Jayce is a phoenix shifter, so it was only natural that he would follow in his family’s footsteps and become a firefighter for the BFD. It does make dating seriously a little tough, though, I mean what if his human partner wasn’t into feathers and flames? Enter dragon shifter, Kristine of the New York Fire Department. Before their romance can really get off the ground, it may go up in flames, because everyone knows long distance relationships rarely work and Kristine has her own life, her own dreams and her mother in New York while Jayce has his life in Boston. It may take a bonfire of trouble for Christine and Jayce’s attempt to help out going up in flames to make them each realize what is more important to them both.

It’s important to me to believe and live the story I am reading and for some reason, I just couldn’t fall into this one completely. I just felt there were times when this tale got too wordy, a bit scattered and that just maybe some of the characters were a little flat. There were some cute moments, but not enough to make me believe that these two were a match made for each other. The heated passion just wasn’t there and when you are talking a phoenix and a dragon, wouldn’t you think it would be a given?

NOT a bad read, but it just failed to "get off the ground" or soar with the eagles of fantasy for me.

I am keeping this review short, really really short. I DNFed it around 60% simply because I was so damn bored. I literally didn't care about the weirdly thrown together plot line, the flimsy romance or any of the cookie cutter characters that populated the book. I then realised if I don't care, why I am continuing to read? As soon as I got bludgeoned over the head with that epiphany I stopped reading, shelved it under DNF and moved on to the next book.

Authors sometimes make confusing choices, adding a mythology or a plot twist that is such unnecessary deus ex machina that it almost ruins a book. NEVER DARE A DRAGON has characters who feel real, and it’s disappointing to have most of their problems disappear in the last quarter of the book.

Jayce and Kristine are two firefighters used to risking their lives for the people in their respective cities and for the people in their family. It made sense that they were so torn about starting their relationship. Boston and New York aren’t that far from each other, but both have serious responsibilities. It was great to see a couple where one person wasn’t willing to give up everything (job/family/school) to be with someone. Most paranormal romance novels get around this problem by making one of the characters a lone wolf/drifter with a murdered family, which is a bit of a cop out.

The phoenix mythology was refreshing. The phoenixes were powerful but small, and they aged faster when they were in bird form. Their regeneration was also super fun and interesting.

Unfortunately for NEVER DARE A DRAGON, the author decided to have Gaia the earth goddess heavily involved in the plot. In a book that had grounded issues such as long-distance relationships, kidnapping, arson and incest, it was incredibly distracting to have teleportation thrown in as an answer to everything.

It was distraction and unfortunate that two characters who are strong willed and capable at their jobs, and who have mighty powers of their own, were reduced to pawns in their own story. I loved lots of parts of NEVER DARE A DRAGON, from the cool family dynamics and the extended dragon and phoenix mythologies; I just wish the characters had solved their own problems.

The blurb to Never Dare a Dragon and the title itself sounded very promising. A phoenix shifter and dragon shifter is an unusual pairing. 

Jayce is a phoenix shifter and works as a firefighter in Boston.  He meets Kristine, also a firefighter but in New York, and she is a dragon shifter.  I enjoyed their banter in the beginning.  Their flirting was great and I felt they had something starting.  Kristine is in New York, though,  and Jayce is in Boston. Unfortunately, their romance never really got off the ground. 

Long distance relationships are hard. Jayce does go to NY to see if there is anything to this "thing". While there, there are all sorts of drama that takes center stage away from this couple's romance.  Because of that, I never got invested in them, and their romance doesn't gain any traction. I didn't feel any real chemistry either. There was never a OMG they need to be together type of feeling for me. For the types of shifters that each were, you would have thought they would have had some type of heated intensity that I felt was missing.

That's not to say it wasn't a good read.  It just wasn't great. At times it lulled and seemed to have too much explanation that I just tuned it out and started to skim. Maybe you will see it differently, but when everything went down and the ending was here, I was left wanting more.

This third book to the Boston Dragons series is full of strong willed characters trying to do the right thing.

Kristine does everything for the right reasons but ends up in a pickle when her mom's situation forces her to make choices between moral right and family love. This character is very intriguing. Her mind is wired in a manner that portrays quick thinking but independency from others. So it was quite fun watching her learn to let others help.

Jayce is hysterical..... well his first meeting with Kristine was. But how he turns the tables and pushes his way into her life was enjoyable to read and kept the story moving right along.

Secondary characters were all well rounded with many of them presented in the first two books of this series. While I didn't think I would like Kristine's mom from the description in the beginning of the book I really got to understand her and like how she learned to survive with her secrets and fears.

All in all this was an easy fast read and for this reason I give it 4 STARS.

Never Dare a Dragon is the third book in Ashlyn Chase's Boston Dragon series. However, people can read these books as standalones, and it is not imperative to read the series in order. This was the first book I've read by Ashlyn Chase, and I was underwhelmed. I was expecting a sexy fantasy romance, and instead I was handed a lackluster (and insta-love) romance with too many side characters and sub-plots getting in the way.

Let's first talk about the romance. I was so disappointed by the romance. Both Jayce and Kristine were such flat characters. The whole entire time, I did not care about the characters. There was a lot telling and not showing of Jayce and Kristine's feelings, whether it be about their relationship or not. Because of this, their personalities never shined through and they came off as one-dimensional instead of complex. When you put two pieces of cardboard together, sparks don't ensue. Instead, you get a misshapen box for even more problems to go in. My main issue with this romance was how boring it was. I was so tired of reading any of their interactions. Normally sex scenes are sexy (I know, what?!) but I was just about to doze off reading about the two of them getting it on. Plus, Jayce and Kristine know each other about a week before they start declaring their love for each other. I just couldn't believe it.

And guess what? There is not just one insta-love, there's two! There's this whole sub-plot about Kristine's mother, who I did not care about at all. She's kidnapped in the very beginning of the movie, and I really thought I would get some great action sequences. Instead, the issue was solved in the blink of an eye and then we got some lukewarm romance for the remaining 60 percent of the book. The first man Kristine can have kids on, she falls in love with. They are in a serious relationship and contemplating marriage within a week...what???

The "action" parts were also underwhelming as well. Like I mentioned, there is a kidnapping early on in the novel, but it is solved pretty quickly. There were a couple strings left unresolved, and that took up the remainder of the plot that wasn't taken up by the romance. However, the action never seemed dangerous and I was never scared of the characters. The antagonists never provided any sense of threat, so I wasn't invested in the story at all.

The other huge complaint I had were all the other characters. I understand that they were all from the last two books, but they didn't add anything to the story. I've read series before like this and have read them out of order. Whenever the inevitable cameos happened, I wanted to read the other books, but this didn't happen in Never Dare a Dragon. I felt as if never Dare a Dragon was used to tie up all the loose ends for the past two books, and I simply didn't care.

Unfortunately, Never Dare a Dragon was a huge miss for me. This series seems to be well loved by others, but it didn't hit the mark. I wanted a sexy action filled fantasy romance, but instead I got insta-love two times over and a non-threatening antagonist.

If you decide to pick up Never Dare a Dragon, I hope it works well for you! Even if this didn't work for me, it just might work for you.

While having read the previous books will give a reader a better grasp of the secondary characters and the mythology, I think new comers to the series will still be able to enjoy the read.I did read the first two books, and they certainly gave me a head start when things started to get complicated.

Never Dare a Dragon is both what I expected from Chase, and a little disappointing. I think a good amount of time was spent on the danger and conflicts of the book were very well done. The danger to Kristine and her mother felt very real, as did Kristine's need to resolve the problem and keep Amy safe. Although, I will admit that I kept expecting a member of her fire station to be in the pocket of the bad guys, and was a little relieved that it never came to pass. The continuing thread about the dragon families and muses from the series might not make sense to newcomers, and while I enjoyed that continuity I think it felt like an afterthought rather than a necessary part of the book. My biggest issue with the book is that I never felt really connected with Kristine or Jayce. Their romance just was, I never really felt that it built up or grew. Perhaps it just depended on the aspect of paranormal characters that find a perfect mate and just know rather than getting to know each other and work through relationship issues. I get that the action of the story made doing that hard, but some of it could have happened prior to the danger and action coming into play. I still liked the book, and I still felt it was important to the larger story arc, but I have come to expect more fun and character depth from Chase.

Never Dare a Dragon is a good addition to the series, and I found some of it very good. However, it just did not capture me the same way the previous books in the series did.

The title Never Dare a Dragon sounds very promising. And since I really like shapeshifter stories, I was really excited to get the arc from Netgalley. But have you ever looked at the face of a little child when they get the surprisebox at a fastfood restaurant? The child goes through several fases: 1) falls in love with the great poster of the toys which will be in the box. 2) starts pleading when you are in line to order: "Can I puh-lease get the surprisebox???" 3) is jumping up and down: "when is it ready... Can I get it already..." 4) is following you to the table, nearly knocking all other things from your hands. 5) opens the box and pulls the toy out of the box. 6) realizes it is just a piece of plastic... 7) eats the contents of the surprisebox and decides to play with the toy for the next few minutes.

Well... that was pretty much my experience with this book. I looked very good (I mean: look at that cover...), the title got to me and the blurb was very promising. So I really, really wanted to read it. (Puh-lease Netgalley, will you give me a copy....). And I jumped up and down, when my request was granted, dropping all my other books and starting on this one directly.

And it was a good read. Jayce is a very hunky dory guy with only one strange feature: you can torch him and he will go up in flames. Only to revive from the ashes as a bird. A Phoenix bird to be precise. And he can phase from bird to man and back again. No biggy. Well, it does come in handy when you are a Boston firefighter.

On the other had, we have Kristine, who is also a firefighter (only in New York) and who is also very fireproof, because she is actually a dragon. They meet, sparks are flying (literally this time...) and to make matters more interesting: Kristine's mother is also a dragon who is kidnapped...

The story flows easily, Jayce and Kristine find out each other secrets and they go after the kidnappers of her mother. So, we have action, excitement, tender love and care. All ingredients are there. But after ending the book: it still left me a bit unsatisfied. Like the fastfood: you are in need of more...

But hey, some fastfood every now and then is just great! Three out of five stars from me. And a thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.

Plot & Pacing — 19/25
The plot had me hooked early on and kept me invested all the way through. The story flowed well and made it hard to put down. There was one flashback chapter that initially threw me off, and while it made more sense as I got closer to the end, the fact that there were no other flashbacks made it feel a little out of place. Still, the strong plot and engaging pacing carried the story and kept me fully along for the ride.

Character Building & Chemistry — 25/25
The character building and chemistry were absolutely spot on. The banter between the characters was sharp, natural, and had me genuinely chuckling more than once. Their interactions felt effortless and layered, making the relationships believable and engaging from start to finish. The chemistry kept me fully entertained and emotionally invested, elevating the story and making every shared scene a highlight.

Writing Style — 15/20
The writing style was smooth and easy to follow, allowing the story to flow nicely from scene to scene. A few moments felt more childish in tone compared to others, but that felt more like a personal perception than a flaw in the author’s style. It didn’t take away from the story or disrupt the overall reading experience, and the narrative remained engaging and cohesive throughout.

Emotional Impact — 20/20
This one hit close to home. With past childhood trauma, I found it easy to relate to the FMC and deeply understand her struggle with identity and self-discovery. Her journey felt raw yet gentle, and the way she worked through her emotions resonated in a very real way. The sense of closure she reached felt peaceful rather than rushed, making her growth feel earned and emotionally satisfying.

Memorability & Aftertaste — 10/10
I fully intended to put this down and finish it the next day… but that didn’t happen. The story stayed with me the moment I closed the book, making it impossible not to keep going until the end. Even now, I’m still thinking about both the FMC and MMC and wishing I could know more about their lives beyond the final page. It’s the kind of book that lingers — one you don’t just finish, but continue to carry with you.

These stories have officially moved from dragon-centric to phoenix-centric and I am totally enjoying them. They have a mix of smut, action, and romance that give you a good intro to this world, even if you’re picking up from this point in the series.

Jayce is the latest Fierro to get the focus of their own story. We met them all in the previous book, but we get to see it all happen from his (and Kristine’s) perspective. Who knew that meeting a girl at your brother’s fake funeral could start off an epic romance? Kristine is a dragon shifter who happened to be attending said funeral without any understanding of the paranormal undercurrents. Sure, she was appalled by the fact that Jayce wanted to flirt at his brother’s funeral, but she ended up writing it off as his own way of processing grief. She is, however, very happy to see him walk into her firehouse without warning.

These two have some sizzling chemistry (haha, fire paranormals, haha) but that part of the story can kind of be predicted. I liked the general lightheartedness you can practically feel jumping off the page when Jayce and Kristine interact. Yes, there are some darker stories at play, where Kristine is forced to do some not-really-good things, but the overall story is their budding romance. Can two paranormals from firehouses in different states make it work? Well, yeah, this is a solid HEA, but well worth the trouble it takes to get there. I especially liked watching them try to cross their paranormal divide.

I was glad that the paranormal aspects wasn't the big drama for the couple in this book. As both of them were shifters, that seemed to help. That just left the two of them to deal with the logistics of one of them living in NYC and the other in Boston.

I liked Kristine and Jayce together, thought their initial flirting was great, but could see how Kristine got upset when she learned who Jayce was. I was glad that Jayce took the initiative to go to NYC to see if there was something to their flirting.

In NYC Kristine and Jayce reconnected in a good way, it's just too bad that drama interrupted them. I found myself annoyed with Kristine's mom, had she been truthful I think a lot of what happened wouldn't have and I hated how Kristine felt like she needed to clean things up which caused some drama with Jayce.

It was fun to see all of the connections between the paranormals in Boston, loved how they realized there were relatives in common. That was a good thing because Kristine needed support and she had a whole new crew of people to help her.

The ending to this one was great, loved how so many couples cemented their love, loved that Kristine didn't have to give up her dream, but found a new path towards it all the while she could be with her love.

Wow that was HOT! Lol sorry but I had to. But seriously this
was one hell of a book. I loved it so much I have to get the
other books. It was well-written and factually accurate for
firefighters. And then there was the passion to.

This is Jayce and Kristen's story. He is a Phoenix, how
unusual for a story to have one. It was really intriguing as to
how if they die they have to go through the aging process all
over. Imagine having a conversation with your guy as he
was as a kid.(I know we think they revert there sometimes,
but imagine he's eight again or even a teen) would not want
to explain the concept of no all over again. Well when things
go bad Kirsten has to do just that. I never laughed so much
with a book. Things just did not seem to be in her favor. But
I have to admit Gia was my favorite in the book. Never talk
bad about Mother Nature she just may be listening and you
don't want to make her mad. Man I cannot wait for the next
book. At least I have 2 others to read in the mean time.


Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you

In Ashlyn Chase latest installment to the Boston Dragon, its Jayce turn at bat. This story takes place at the funeral of one of the fallen fire fighters. And if you read My Wild Irish Dragon you know whose funeral I am talking about.

It seems that all the Boston Phoenix is destined to wind up with Dragons for mates. Yes, it should come as no secret that Kristine Scott who’s also a fire fighter is also a dragon. I guess if you’re a dragon what better profession to get into.

They both have secrets, but the secrets are revealed quickly when someone from her mother’s past forces Kristine to do something that goes against her grain as a fire fighter. It would be up to one dragon and one Phoenix to save Kristine's mother.

I found this book to be just okay. If you read the second book you find that the same formula used in this story. Just add one mystery and a nabbing of one parent and you get Never Dare a Dragon. However, take those bullets away and you will have part 2 of My Wild Irish Dragon.

I did like the outcome of the story, and the big mystery that her mother was holding back. It was a whopper of a secret.

This book was so much fun to read and I'm so glad that I gave this new to me author a chance.

Having a Firebird and a Dragon fall in love? So adorable especially these two particularly kind hearted shapeshifters plus both are two of my favorite mythical beasts!

There were various other creatures mentioned in this book that were also fun to read about. I found the family Dynamics of the Fieros to be a great addition to the storyline especially how close everyone is. Mrs. Fiero and Scotty's Mom are awesome women who have raised strong, independent kids.

Despite a kidnapping that takes place, this novel was an awesome mix of fluffy, steamy, adventure, myth and humor. Plus I loved the added bonus of a double wedding in Ireland which is always something I love to read about.

I can't wait to read the other books in this world and see who is up next to fall in love!

I liked the whole concept of a Phoenix dating a dragon, that was real romantic but I just didn't buy that someone would believe that they have fell in love with someone after only a few days. Paranormally or otherwise. This was my first time reading this series and it was very refreshing seeing characters in a profession that we normally don't think about. I wasn't entirely gung-ho on the character Mother Nature, sometimes known as Gaia. She struck me as cocky and grated my nerves a tadbit. Also found myself getting lost in the family lines as they were being described by different characters throughout the book. Perhaps it would had been helpful to provide a family tree in the beginning of the book. I have one book I will be reading from this series but after this one, I'll look into her other series. Hopefully the other books won't have the droll and lukewarm conclusions as did this one. Sorry, not sorry💁

To start...it's not a bad book. Head hopping normally doesn't bother me, but in the beginning chapters I often had places where I wasn't sure whose head I was in, which meant going back to re-read. There were several times I just moved on because even after re-reading I still wasn't sure. Dragons, phoenixes, firefighters, murder, kidnapping, ransom demands, big family dinner, insta-love/sex - and this was all before the halfway point. Then later throw in Mother Nature/Gaia, more dragons, arson, and more.... Oh, and one can't forget the dumbest bad guys on the face of the earth. Everything went downright silly. The pace was often so fast, it left the story feeling superficial. Even the sex felt skimmed over, despite the detail. It was enjoyable bit of fluff.

Never Dare a Dragon is a funny, action packed, danger lurking, romantic story with numerous paranormal beings and the sassy,wicked mother Nature lol. It starts with a funeral and ends with a wedding or two.
Jayce and Kristine have a funny start to meeting and instant attraction, both being firefighters you know there is going to be heat. Jayce is sexy, loyal, loves his family and did I mention sexy?
Kristine is independent, sassy and courageous working in a man's world. She also has secrets and some of these secrets involve danger and finding the truth.
I loved this story and the wild ride through them finding each other and figuring out how to be together. It has laughter, snarkiness and sweetness. A must read , I loved it .

This book was very good. It did slow down a bit in the middle but I persevered and it finished off very nicely. This is about Lt. Jayce Fierro of the Boston Fire Dept. and he is a Phoenix shifter. He meets up with Kristine Scott of the FDNY and she is a dragon shifter. She thinks it will never work out as she has to stay in New York and help her mother out and Jayce cannot leave the Boston Fire Dept. either as he is pegged to take over as the head of the clan when his father retires soon. They do the long distance and then Kristine gets into big trouble and needs Jayce's help. Quite a bit of passion between them and there were some tense moments. All in all, a good read. Recommend.

This book brings the Boston Dragons trilogy to a close but Ashlyn Chase has already started the Phoenix Brothers series and readers of the Boston Dragons will enjoy that as well. I enjoyed this book which features Jayce Fierro of the Boston Fire Department and Kristine Scott of the New York Fire Department. Despite their attraction to each other they figured a long distance relationship wouldn't work. However, while Jayce is in New York on a "vacation", Kristine winds up in serious trouble and needs his help.

A fast-paced romance and great read, I recommend "Never Dare a Dragon" to fans of the paranormal in general and dragons in particular.

Loved It

Boston, the hotbed of paranormal activity which includes the strangest bunch of characters I’ve read about in a long time. I love this crew who showed up in different series that keep my laughing. This is a totally different take on the Phoenix than any fantasy or paranormal story I’ve read because there are more than one.in fact there are a nest of them! Jayce is the second oldest who happens to fall in love with a dragon just like his older brother did. Only this dragon is a tad bit selfish in my opinion. I’m glad things worked out for them in the end and now I’m off to find the series about Jayce and Ryan’s other brothers.

A peculiar mix of the paranormal

This starts off as routine-ish shifter story of mixed shifter romance, that makes offspring impossible (in this version of paranormal), with the types of routine problems many potential couples face. Then other random mythical creatures are added into the mix, and the book feels more YA apart from the occasional sex scenes. Mother Nature as a physical deity feels like too much of a stretch, a God-like creation that knows everything, but can’t understand mobile phones? There’s a lack of finesse and sophistication that made me struggle to accept the story line as an adult paranormal romp.

This is the first book I have read by Ashlyn Chase. It was the third book in the Boston Dragon series.

I found myself not enjoying this book. I couldn't engage with the lead characters and thus the storyline for me plodded. Also having not read the earlier books, a lot of characters from diverse origins were introduced which added a level of confusion distracting from the enjoyment.

A fun installment of the Boston dragons and an interesting point of view of paranormals in the real world. The latter half stalls a little as Chase skips over some promising developments to dwell on career conflict between the central couple. If you introduce human trafficking , you should probably explore that. The end also feels a feeling of 'quick wrap-up' with no explanation of the background of the series even though it's a major plot point. Still an entertaining revisit of a fun series.

Really? Mother Gaia, who is "as old as dirt", refers to herself as "Mother-Freaking-Nature".

I has such high hopes for this book because it started quite well.
I liked the idea of phoenixes who have to wait months to mature in their bird form or risk coming back way younger than they were their last life.
Of all the romances I've read involving phoenixes, this one handled it best.
And I need a job as one of them modern muses.

I recently got a free updated copy of this book from Ashlyn and was great to read again. A great read with strong family ties, a bit of intrigue, humor and a bit of spice thrown in. She has a good knack of telling a story to keep you interested. Was a great love story between Kaitlyn and Jayce, who helped get her mother out of trouble. I especially loved it as part of the book was based in Boston where I grew up. Looking forward to re reading some of her books,

Really bad writing, too many plot devices of convenience, overuse of specific words and phrases, and way too magically perfect of an ending. At least it was a fast read.
