Yevhen Sverstiuk is an essayist, historian of literature, and poet. He holds a doctorate in philosophy and has a degree in psychology. Dr Sverstiuk is best known as a member of the Ukrainian national resistance and mastermind of the Ukrainian samizdat of the 1960s. He has spent 12 years in prison and exile for his literary activity, in particular, for the book Sobor u ryshtovanni (“The Cathedral in Scaffolding,” Paris, 1970). His book Bludni syny Ukrainy (“Ukraine’s Prodigal Sons,” 1993) was awarded the Shevchenko Prize. He is editor of the Orthodox culturological newspaper Nasha vira (“Our Faith”). Dr Sverstiuk has authored the books Shevchenko i chas (“Shevchenko and the Time”), Na sviati nadii (“At the Feast of Hopes”), Yevhen Sverstiuk na khvyliakh “Svobody” (“Yevhen Sverstiuk on air with Radio Liberty”), Pravda polynova (“The Bitter Truth”), Ne myr, a mech (“Not Peace but Sword”), Shevchenko ponad chasom (“Shevchenko Above Time”), Hohol i ukrainska nich (“Gogol and the Ukrainian Night”).
