Iron Wind

Rate this book
Book 5 in Anthony J Melchiorri’s The Tide series.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo already faced the extreme ravages of war before the outbreak. But deep within the militia-controlled jungles, Captain Dominic Holland and his covert group, the Hunters, follow a lead in a desperate race to uncover who is responsible for the biological weapon turning humans into the monsters known as Skulls. But what they uncover may be far more dangerous and frightening than they ever expected.

Back in the United States, a lost member of Dom’s team makes a final stand to survive and reunite with the Hunters. He faces a relentless tide of Skulls alone. Haunted by his past, he soon realizes far more is at stake than just his survival. The fate of the Hunters and their mission may rest in his hands.

Maybe it’s me, but I didn’t see as much action as I did in the last book.

Okay...Captain Dom and his team of hunters have been accused of manufacturing the oni-agent, which causes the virus that turns people into skulls.

That’s what they are being called because they grow a strong bony growth all over their bodies which protects them.

They also turn into violent depraved cannibals who hunt down and kill everything alive.

This time Dom and his team head for Birkoro, a city in The Congo. They believe that the scientists who created the virus are hidden there.

Not only do they find the ravenous skulls known as the droolers and the Goliaths, but there is a new skull in town.

Oh, Lord…

'Iron Wind', book #5 of the Tide series has a lot more character development than the previous editions which helps in understanding their decision making and strengths/weaknesses going forward. I always appreciate this aspect as it is necessary. However, I wish there was a bit more Skull battles which is what hooked me into this series initially. Hopefully the ante will be upped again in book #6 with the Humans vs. Skulls life and death confrontations....

It's starting to get a little silly now with giant monsters and yet another miracle cure developed in a matter of days. Not sure I will go on to the next one.

Mix "The Walking Dead" with "The Extinction Cycle", add some "The last ship" and a little dose of "World War Z", and "The Tide" is what you end up with. Entertaining and well written. I will keep reading till the bitter end.

4+ stars. Another amazing adventure tale featuring non-stop action, horror and more that left me literally exhausted after it was said and done... at least so far!

I have to admit that "Iron Wind" stirred very mixed and even conflicting feelings. It is - again and again and again - another tremendous success in a series of AJM's amazing apocalyptic stories that I read AGAIN into the wee hours of the morning. There is no argument from me at all that this is easily the most thrilling group of books in this genre I've read since this author teamed up with NS.Smith to bring us their co-written "Extinction Cycle" books.

However, having said that, this book filled me not with hope, but with a truly visceral sense of despair. Make no mistake: this is a dark, dark book and yes, if you want, you can look back to your high school days of having to read Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" for 'inspiration'. From the nearly hopeless situation befalling all of mankind - not only from the threat of the Skulls and their kin but also the progression of the virus itself - to Dom's own 'Apocalypse Now' Col.Kurtz-like sense of doubt and loss, it left me feeling drained and more than mildly depressed. I know the counter-argument should be that this book has real moments of hope and bravery in it - and none greater than what Frank does or how the team pulls together when they need to most - but maybe after reading what must be by now well over 1200+ pages of dystopian gloom and doom without pause, I am starting to wear down myself. I wonder how or even if anyone could ever do what this team has done.

In addition, Mechiorri introduces SO MUCH new stuff in this book - from new forms of the beasts to different continental settings, allies, enemies and more - that I felt, well, no, not like the book was rushed. No, more like it could have been twice as long and still had room to provide more details. I just felt like so much BIG stuff was happening - and no, that's not just a Goliath pun - that we could have spent much longer on the Congo, much longer in the hide-out of the CDF and with their leaders, much longer doing, well, everything and not missed a beat. This book had as much to offer as the one chapter in "Extinction Cycle" where we find ourselves in Rome/The Vatican and if you've read that, you know how things ended there.

Maybe the faults is with me. I feel beat. Maybe a nice beach holiday would help... but oh look, there's more books in the series, talk to you later!

These books just keep getting better and better! I love how the author meshes some of the characters' backstories right into the same paragraphs where they are knee-deep in skulls and fighting for survival. In this book, Dom and his crew travel to the Congo to try and get to the bottom of who developed and then started the spread of the ONI agent. Here, The Hunters encounter two new kinds of skulls...one titanic...one minuscule...both highly intelligent and incredibly cunning. The Hunters are used to the mindless skulls who use sheer numbers as their only means of getting what they want and the Goliaths who use brute force to get what they want, but these new skulls really throw them all for a loop! They have to be more vigilant and cunning themselves in order to survive the Congo and not all of them will make it out alive! And what they end up finding in the Congo will answer some questions, but will raise a few more.

There is also horrific trouble brewing for those who were left behind on the Huntress as the science and medical team work furiously to take care of the survivors in their care and to find a way to stop the ONI agent once and for all. They could not have predicted what their race for a cure would unleash in its wake.

The Huntress's only helicopter pilot, Frank, who was separated from The Hunters in the 4th book has finally broken away from his captors and goes through Hell and back to reunite with his crew. If miracles were tangible things, Frank would be popping them like Vitamin C! He faced so many unbelievably weighted odds and although he came out beaten and bruised on the other side...he did indeed come out on the other side!

The author has a straightforward way of drawing you in to the story and making you care about all of these strangers who come together in an epic and honorable search for the people who devastated the world in such a horrific way. You actually feel like you are part of their story and you experience what they experience...and the odds just seem to keep stacking up against them! At least they have acquired some new friends in the Congo and from the Azores and have also acquired a prisoner now who can give them some much needed answers! Too bad we have to wait for book #6 to get them! Ha!

This series continues to be a top-notch apocalypse thriller.

You should know going in that this series is one of those giant stories broken up into novel-sized pieces. There's a story-arc to each volume, but the real story takes the whole series to tell. You must start at number one and read them in order and you will not get much in the way of resolution at the end of any single volume. (Normally, this annoys me, but for some reason, it's fine in this series.)

Things I find myself liking as I make my way through it:

Women are treated as competent, complete humans. They fight and think and love and are not treated as objects, idiots, or possessions. Bonus points for one of the main female characters being both sexy and kick-ass at the age of fifty and with a significant battle scar.

Men, too, are allowed to escape the limitations of the warrior stereotype without being presented at weak or unmanly. The MC has actual feelings besides anger and lust. And he's still a bad-ass. He can have a love interest without treating her as "the little woman" who must be protected, and in fact, fights alongside her without his efficacy being compromised by their relationship. Amazing!

The monsters could easily have been either boring or silly. More than once, the basic idea behind them reminded me of Plants vs. Zombies, BUT they are actually scary as heck. Melchiorri is really creative in how he presents variations on the theme. Some of his creatures are great nightmare fuel.

Whether it's intentional or not, there are parts of this book that mirror and refute H. Rider Haggard's African adventures, particularly the encounters with the Amahagger in She. It's nice to see American/European characters encounter African characters and treat them like... well, like people. It's sad that this is still rare enough that it draws attention, but I'm so pleased to find it here.

THIS SERIES JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER

What an awesome Book #5 as Anthony Melchiorri has done it again and this series just keeps getting better and better. This book has it all and it doesn't slow down, from the first page to the last page here's another book in this series you won't want to put down. Dom and his crew are in for the fight of their lives, with Imps & Titans in the mix you think it couldn't get any worse. But now the Hunters are fighting for the rest of humanity. The only answer is, who will win? I want to say this book is the best by far, but I seriously loved each and every book in this Series. I highly recommend this book to everyone out there and I can't wait for #6. This is also one series I would read a second time, it is that good. Anthony Melchiorri, you rock!!! Keep the stories coming.

The fight for humanity continues

Dom, Meridith and the Hunters on on a mission, not just to clear their names but to find the true architects of the Oni Agent. It leads them into the jungles of the Congo. New monsters are discovered, more horrific that what is already out there but to find answers, the possible discovery of why they were targeted, framed and why. There will be losses and pain but in the end they also find new friends that have as much at stake in the discovery of a way to stop the final assault and destruction of all life on the planet. To make matters worse there is another battle being waged on the Huntress itself as Lauren and her team discover the unthinkable has happened. It is slow in places but only to show the desperation of each group as they fight for survival and the final battle is an all out fight that will decide it all.

This is the fifth book in The Tide Series and also the final book which has been published. As with the previous four books, the story flow is a bit slower choosing to focus on the details of each battle and significant event. I enjoy this style of story telling, however, if you prefer a plot that expands quickly then this series may not be for you.

In this installment the Hunters are pushing hard through the Congo in the hopes of reaching those responsible for the Oni outbreak. While the Hunters do battle, the rest of crew works hard to find a cure for the virus.

One thing I really enjoyed was the introduction of two new types of skulls. I won't provide any spoilers about these new beasts, you will just have to read it for yourself.

I'm hoping for a sixth book in this series to be released soon.

Love this addition to the series. Very epic in scope, I could really see this in the big screen.

Loved getting to know Frank a better, wasn't sure I'd enjoy that part of this story, but I should have known better. Parts of his story actually had me cheering for him.

Dom and the crew are on an adventure that is nothing short of nail biting. It also made me cry. Again. Hate when he makes me cry, but this story also has some epic knock down fighting that is incredibly fun to read. Can't wait for the next book to come out in this series.

This was not my favorite book of the series thus far, but I gave it four stars because it was still an extremely entertaining read. This book, I believe, serves as a nice segway to what must surely be the intended finale Mr. Melchiorri has in mind. Knowledge gained by the hunters is leading them toward a showdown with the creators of the Oni agent and those protecting them. Sadly, one of the hunter team is lost in this book. On a brighter note, the scientific team aboard Huntress makes a wonderful discovery. Whew...on to the next book.

Amazing series.

Very well written series that I know I will read again.....and again! It has kept me on the edge of my seat with actual nail biting moments where I didn't want to wait to find out what happens next - Anthony knows how to draw out a moment just long enough to prevent me screaming at him 😃!! Unlike another reviewer, I find Dom's moments of worrying about killing enemy soldiers very human and proof that goodness can exist in apocalyptic conditions. Another very much enjoyed book in the series - now for book 6!

Terrifyingly good

Just as I thought Anthony had peaked in the first four novels of the Tide Series, out comes “Iron Wind”. Not only does Dom head off to the darkest jungles of the Congo, but Frank is freaking out in the forests of Virginia looking for something that flies. Then there’s Sheppard and his motley crew trying to do their part in the Skull war. With all the action going on, it’s like reading three different stories that somehow wind up together and making total sense in the last few chapters. The mark of a true writer! Can’t wait to get to the next book.

When will the tide turn?

Dom, Meredith, the Hunters and the crew of the Huntress have the fight of their lives on more than one front. First Skulls then Goliaths, Growlers and Titans. Oh and imps which aren’t nice at all. Then there’s gangs and very evil people and the virus that could take their lives with just a scratch. There are even more C4 charges and gun battles in Iron Wind. And a teensy touch of romance. For edge of your chair, breathtaking adrenaline and emotional turmoil this series is the one!

I liked the books 1-4 so much, I picked up book 5 in the series. This one takes us to the Congo, where the special ops team led by Dom and Meredith to seeking to find answers to the source of the world-wide virus that has changed much of humanity into monsters. The team uncovers many secrets here, and is introduced the some enemies to deal with. Lots of action in this series, though it still resembles the Extinction Cycle. But I'm too invested in the plot right now to care.

This 5th book in the series continues where The previous one left.
The search for people behind the outbreak has extended to the jungles of Congo. Some new threats awaited in the jungles but The Hunters also found new friends with the same cause. They are also united with a lost colleague, but also lost one.
And for the first time it seems that the cure seems to be working on folks rescued from Boston.

Excellent read that is tension-filled, action-packed, and has some of the best genetically-mutated monsters in fiction I've read. The Congo unleashes probably the most haunting of the Skulls -- Titans.
While this is nicely tied up, it's left open, which means there is definitely more in the series, and I will definitely be waiting to read the next. Highly recommended.

Enjoyable near zombie stories - new twist, books are as close to books as I have seen for a while - natural split and sensible size, not 1 book per chapter. Enjoyed and got to the end and the story actually stops at a natural place and does not need another book which is a good ploint of closure. Well done.

Not a zombie in sight but decent baddies.

Next page, please!

This is a great series! Every book keeps getting better, and every time I read them again my opinion raises. One of the hardest things about this series is schooling myself to read slower so I don't miss any of the little details that make up the bigger story. Next page, please!

Never ending action!!

Another great book in the Tide Series. Dom and his crew of hunters are in a constant battle to stop the Oni Agent with a cure and to find the people responsible for it. As he loses one of his original hunters he seems to get a replacement. But another thrilling book and onto book 6

Great series

I've binge read the first 5 back to back to back etc .and everytime i start to think its getting stale a new twist comes up . But at a perfect pace to keep it exciting but as not to be confusing with too many new scenarios to follow .im loving this series. Just hate that there is only a few books left for me to read . I give this series a big A+ 2 thumbs up !!

The action continues along with the Titans, Goliaths, Imps & more

The action rolls almost non-stop, the main characters continue to soldier on and the Hunter team is nearing a facility that may have ..... oops !!! ..... to say anymore would spoil the book, that is for certain. Book 6 will see the action continue as the plot thickens faster than a bad gravy.

CONGO's TITANS

Another story that helps uncover more of the "Oni". The usual characters plus Alicia's and the rest of the people in this Congo story. The "Oni" is killing more and more this time is the people in the "Huntress". The same people working to save the world.

The return of Frank to the action. Follow the Hunters in their search for a cure and justice!

#5 seems to be the best of the series so far. It moved from what had become routine killing of skulls to a more adventureous plot. The under story of Frank's return and the struggle finding a cure, helped to refresh the series and my interest. I'm hoping that #6 adheres to the same or a similar plan.

Great Exciting Read!

The excitement never ends. The author does a brilliant job of raising the stakes as the series continues. Excellent characterizations and growth. I have binge read the first 5 books and happily lost sleep diving into this adventure. I would definitely recommend this series to everyone with an interest in the genre.

This was actually better than the last books. We finally got some development, and not just mindless action.

That said, I'd have been happy if this had been the final book. It's dragged enough already.
