"Taptapadi`, is actually "Saptapadi` as the name suggests is walking those seven initial steps together; one of the rituals of an Indian marriage. These seven steps are indicative of the life that a husband and wife are going to lead together in each other`s company, holding hands on the way, completing the journey of life with a firm belief in each other, supporting each other, sometimes following, sometimes leading. In Sanskrit it is said that, "Sakha Saptapadi Bhav`; it indicates that the seven steps that we walk together during the "saptapadi` should always be our friends, should bring our minds close to each other, should make us comfortable towards each other, should help us to understand each other properly as a friend would. Those men who understand the meaning of "Sakha` will lead such a life; for them life will be no less than heaven itself, but those who do not understand the real meaning of the word "Sakha` will suffer. For them trudging along will in no way a pleasant experience, for them it will be walking on a hot iron plate. Before taking the seven steps of the "Saptapadi` the end of the bride`s saree is tied up in a firm knot to the shawl that the bridegroom carries over his shoulders. At any time, he can conveniently discard the shawl as he is just carrying it over his shoulders. But for a bride it is not easy. Even if she decides to discard it then she has to pay heavily for it. She has to take care of the shawl along with the knot or compensate for it; laboriously; even today

वधूने शालू नेसलेला असतो. वराने उपरणं पांघरलेलं असतं. त्यामुळे ते उपरणं तो केव्हाही उतरवू शकतो. वधूला ते उपरणं गाठीसकट सांभाळावं लागतं. ते उपरण्याचं ओझं झटकून टाकायचं तिने ठरवलं तर अजूनही ह्या समाजात तिला जबर किंमत मोजावी लागते.

लग्न विधीतल्या सप्तपदीबरोबर सुखाच्या सहस्त्र्पदांची स्वप्ने पाहत स्त्री प्रपंचात पाऊल टाकते. त्यावेळी अनेक संमिश्र भावनांनी तिचे मन वेढलेले असते. नव्या नवलाईचं अप्रुप, नवीन वातावरणं, नवीन माणसं याचं अनामिक दडपण आणि सार्‍या आयुष्याचाच ट्रॅक बदलणारी महत्वाची घडामोड.
नव्यानवलाईत डोळ्यासमोरच्या सहजीवनाबद्दलच्या स्वप्नांच्या धुंदीत पावलांखालची जमीन कशी आहे हे कित्येकदा समजत नाही. सुखाच्या अनुभवातला आभास हळूहळू जाणवू लागतो जीवनाचे संसाराचे बोचणारे जखमा करणारे रूप उलगडू लागते.


संसारातील अशा तप्तमुद्रांच्या कथा या संग्रहात वपुंनी रेखाटल्या आहेत. अनेकजणी या तप्तपदीवरून अखंडपणे चालत आहेत. संसारात सर्वार्थानं सूर जुळणे अशक्यच. ‘सखा सप्तपदी भव’- एका ओळीच्या ह्या अष्टाक्षरी कवितेतल्या ‘सखा’ ह्या शब्दाचा अर्थ ज्या ज्या पुरुषांना समजला, त्या त्या संसारांच्या बाबतीत सात पावलांनी स्वर्ग पृथ्वीवर अवतरतो. उरलेल्या संसारांची ती तप्तपदीच! पण नवरा जर 'सखा’ असेल तर पाऊलवाट फुलांच्या पायघड्यांची बनते. तसे नसेल तर
जखमा करणारा काटेरी रस्ता. अवघड वाट अशीच शक्यता निर्माण झालेल्या संसाराच्या कथा खास वपु शैलीत.

As ever, mesmerisingly well written. Small aspects of married life are woven beautifully. Heart-touching collection of 7 stories telling no one is right or wrong in the nuptial bond. Only the thoughts and perspective of a person is incorrect. Alot to understand in each set of perspective.

Extraordinary!

Over and over, author explores women's travails within marriage, and thry are all so true, one wonders how he knew!

तू येत राहा - Mind-boggling.

Writer who writes like this, also wrote 'बाई, बायको, कॅलेंडर' (Bai Bayko Calender)?

Not that that wasn't good! It is!

तिशी Goes straight to whatever part's that supposed to know - yes, true!

But this is all life, heart, travails of a woman. How did the author know?

आसावरी (Asavari) is about the torture every accomplished, successful woman endures, few escaping.

प्रतीक (Prateek) comes across as expected, not in details or dialogues, but in the very theme.

That's not to say there aren't profound truths here, too.

मॅरेज इज ए डील is different. Not an uncommon problem as far as women face in India.

Wish he'd written दिशा with genders exchanged.

But he perhaps has.

Marriage is a deal किंवा contract नक्कीच नाही, पण दुर्दैवाने ज्या संस्कृतीत व्यक्तिस्वातंत्र्यापेक्षा लग्न नेहमीच जास्त महत्वाचं ठरतं त्यात लग्न आणि deal मध्ये जास्त फरक राहत नाही, आणि अशाच काही deals मध्ये काही व्यक्तींचं पूर्ण आयुष्य वाया जातं.

यात एकूण सात कथा आहेत, फसलेल्या लग्नांच्या आणि त्यावर आपापल्या परीने शोधलेल्या उपायांच्या. लग्न झालं म्हणजे मुलीची जबाबदारी (?) संपते का? लग्न टिकावं म्हणून मनाविरुद्ध आपल्या आवडीचं काम सोडणं बरोबर का? किंवा निव्वळ पत्रिका छापल्याहेत म्हणून किंवा वाईट प्रवृत्तीच्या माणसांना धडा शिकवण्यासाठी म्हणून स्वतःहून जाणूनबुजून अशा घरी लग्न करून जायचं का? नाही ना?! आजकाल निदान मोठ्या शहरात तरी 'कितीही त्रास झाला तरी लग्न टिकायलाच हवं' असा अट्टहास दिसत नाही, नोकरीबरोबरच घरातली कामं वेळेत केली तरच ती आदर्श बायको, असाही विचार आजकाल कमी होतोय. त्यामुळे या कथा सगळ्यांनाच पटणार नाहीत. पण पुस्तक जेव्हा लिहिलं होतं, तेव्हाचा काळ तसाच होता.

मग हे पुस्तक अगदीच outdated ठरतं का? नक्कीच नाही. शिक्षणाअभावी किंवा इतर काही कारणांमुळे अजूनही बरेच जणं अन्यायाविरुद्ध आवाज उठवू शकत नाहीत. व.पुं.च्या इतर लिखाणात असतं तसं बरंच तत्वज्ञान यातही आहे. त्यातल्या माणसांचे स्वभाव अजूनही आपल्या आजूबाजूला दिसतात, कमीजास्त प्रमाणात आपल्यातही असतात. आपल्याला ते ओळखता येत नाहीत. आजूबाजूला सगळेच like minded असतील ही शक्यता कमीच. तेव्हा स्वतःचे किंवा आपले ज्यांच्याशी नेहमीच संबंध येतात अशा जवळच्या नातेवाईकांच्या स्वभावाचं audit म्हणा हवं तर, करण्यासाठी हे पुस्तक एकदा वाचायला हरकत नाही.

अचूकपणे वर्णिलेले क्षण..

संसारात येणाऱ्या बहुतेक सर्व प्रकारच्या वक्ती आणि स्वभावाचे अचूक वर्णन आहे. हेकेखोर माणसं त्यामुळे आलेल्या अडचणी.. त्यांना आपलंसं समजून सांभाळणारी माणसं.. सगळंच आपल्या आजूबाजूला असल्यासारखं वाटत आणि आपल्याच कथा सांगताय अशी भावना होत राहते..

तप्तपदी हि वपु च्या कथारत्नापैकी एक..

सप्तपदी हि खर तर लग्नाची खूणगाठ पण लग्न म्हणजे एकमेकांची साथ घेऊन आयुष्य फुलवणे, एकेमकांची प्रगती होण्यासाठी झटणे. थोड्यात "एका सखी साठी सखा होणं" हे ज्यांना समजला नाही त्यांच्यासाठी हीच सप्तपदी, तप्तपदी ठरते.

आसावरी हि कथा तर प्रत्येक स्त्रीनि वाचायलाच हवी अशी आहे. प्रत्येक वाक्य अधोरेखित करावं असाच आहे. अशीच काही वाक्य..

"चार भितींच्या आत फक्त प्रेमच असावं. चार भिंतींच्या बाहेर तर्काने प्रश्न सोडवावेतं. आपण उलट करतो. ज्यांच्याबरोबर आयुष्य घालवायच त्यांच्याशी मोकळपणे न बोलता तर्क करीत बसतो.."

"ठिणगी ठिणगीच असते. ती कुठे पडते ह्यावर तीच अस्तित्व टिकत. पाण्याच्या पृष्ठभागावर पडते कि ज्वालाग्राही साठवणीच्या गोदामात? माणसाचं मनही जलाशयाप्रमाणे शीतल आहे कि स्फोटक वास्तूचं गोडाउन आहे ते ठिणगीशिवाय समजत नाही. संशय, स्पर्धा, द्वेष, मत्सर, क्रोध अशी नाना रूप ठिणगीला धारण करता येतात. "

"आयुष्यात जो अंत्यत महत्वाचा निर्णय असतो, की ज्या निर्णयामुळे सगळ्या भवितव्याला कलाटणी मिळण्याची शक्यता आहे, अशा क्षणी कुणावरही विसंबून राहायचं नाही. आपला बेत फसला किंवा कुणीतरी उधळून लावेल अशी परिस्थिती निर्माण होऊ दद्यायची नाही. निर्णयाच्या क्षणी आपण स्वतंत्र असला पाहिजे.."

"हत्या अनेक प्रकारची असते. सगळेच मारेकरी सापडत नाहीत आणि जे सापडतात त्यांना शिक्षा होऊ शकत नाही."

Its a typical classic by Va.Pu. I love his style of writing and totally in love with his writing. I have made a complete list of Va.Pu. books to be read, Some books are already read but I will complete the whole set again.
