Arcane Inc. #3

Dark Warlock

Rate this book
637. That’s the number of children that have been taken in the last thirty years.
All taken by one person. He never leaves any evidence. He never leaves
witnesses. He leaves only a name: Mr Panomie. And Panomie is far from human.

Eddie is hired to solve the case and bring about an end to Panomie's machinations. He delves into a world, in which magical creatures are in charge. But Eddie has problems of his own.
Rachel is in prison but her curse is fighting to take control of Eddie's mind. And it's getting stronger. Each time Eddie gives in to the dark urges the curse gains more ground and he becomes more monstrous. With the darkness inside him rapidly growing he has to figure out a way to cure himself before he becomes worse than Rachel ever was. But it's getting harder to tell the difference between what's him and what's the darkness.

Sean is a writer and reader of all kinds of books, but he particularly enjoys books with 413 pages. He lives alone in Maidstone with his cats, Molly and Klaus, in an apartment that does not allow pets. He is also quite sure that one of them is trying to kill him. It’s a good thing he’s immortal.

He works as a lab technician by day and writes rather marvelous books by night. Sometimes he writes in the day too, but those books aren’t as good.

Sean Stone is a serious man.

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.

This is the third book in the Arcane Inc. series. It is a standalone book with no cliffhanger ending. You can certainly start with this book but I would strongly recommend that you start with the first book in the series "Warlock for Hire" so you can truly get a feel for the MC Eddie Lancaster.

Here, Eddie is hired to look into a case where children are being kidnapped. There's a common thread - the name Mr. Panomie but who or what is it? Eddie works with law enforcement to solve a case where over 600 children have disappeared over the past few decades. On top of this, Eddie is still battling with his dark side.

Without a doubt, Eddie grows quite a bit in this book. He is still snarky and dismissive of other people's feelings but at least he is now starting to realize that he can cause pain. He is also battling with himself over his dark side and whether he can give up his dark side. I love the humor in this series - from his landlord and son antics to dealing with the police to going to his favorite pub. I love this series and highly recommend it!!

I listened to this book - Every once in a while, you see an actor portray a character in a movie and it's magic - Marlon Brando in
The Godfather or Kathy Bates in Misery come to mind. Same can be
said here - Hannibal Hills is completely magic in his narration of Eddie Lancaster and this series. He absolutely enhances the written word and makes
this series so fun!

A child disappears... taken by someone only known as Mr. Panomie… and the child simply appears to have disappeared off the face of the earth...LITERALLY!

Warlock for hire Eddie Lancaster is a little surprised when his once law enforcement nemesis - now enlightened and grudgingly accepting - Detective Chief Inspector Richards comes to him to ask for his special kind of assistance in finding the missing child. And, while Eddie agrees to help, things take a turn when it's discovered that it isn't only this one child that has been taken... but actually only one of 637. So Eddie is on the case that soon becomes even more complicated as he has to contend with the growing darkness that is still within him left there by Rachel...the one that basically made him who he is as a warlock.

Sean Stone always entertains with his stories in the Arcane, Inc series with Eddie Lancaster being his star character. He populates the world of magical England with witches...ghosts...and other supernatural people and creatures.

Another fun story from the mind of Sean Stone.

Honestly, I could just cut and paste my reviews from books one and two here. So, there isn't a lot worth mentioning. I still don't particularly care for the character, the narrator still does a fine job and the writing is still perfectly readable (or listenable in my case). There is significantly more personal growth here than in previous books. So, maybe he Eddie becomes less unbearable as the series progresses. All in all, I think it's just a matter of taste and this series wasn't the one for me.

Another good story. Engaging and enjoyable. Saw more of Eddie's dark side, which was a good thing at times, not so good at others, but still really entertaining. I'm enjoying Eddie and I like the narrator. May have to look into him for more audiobooks.

As with any good mystery series, this book works perfectly as a stand-alone story, with a beginning, middle and end, within a greater series ARC, and you can, as I did, jump right into this Very fun urban fantasy... and enjoy it! The book has a cynical Dark Warlock, Eddie who finds that the missing child case he's just accepted, is a lot bigger than he first suspected... as in 637 children bigger, and involving magical beings, so it's definitively not the usual snatch and grab case as he first thought. On top of that, he's fighting his inner demon, a darkness that he can't allow to take over, a darkness that's getting stronger by the day...
I kinda' liked Hannibal Hills' narration. The voice and his accent was great, but his pacing was a bit off putting. I couldn't tell if it was an affectation he used for the character voice or if it's his general speach pattern. Please don't get me wrong. He narrates a fine story. And I won't hesitate, not even for a moment, to listen to more of his work, but I wanted you to know why I didn't give 'em 5'★.
So, if you enjoy urban fantasy, and find that you're in need of an investigator, then Eddie's your man... no matter how big the case!

Eddie Lancaster is not intended to be the most likeable of main characters, but he is an interesting one and more well-rounded than he was in the first book in the series (I haven't yet read the second one), less reliant on the fourth wall breaking that featured so heavily in the first one.

The narrator does a good job of enhancing this book, giving suitably distinctive tones to the main character and supporting cast to help bring them to life that much more.

Overall, the story is an entertaining one in it's own right and challenging for the hero, but there is also a fair amount of world-building that both fleshes out the overall world while also setting things up for subsequent books in the series too.

The Switch

Boy book 3, just ups the the game for Eddie Lancaster. Don't get me wrong he is still a pain in the butt even when he is working for someone else.

The author does a great job keeping the reader engaged with the various characters. The details and actions flow rather smoothly throughout the whole book. The story provides, grumpy characters, love, betrayal, intrigue, abductions, secrecy and revenge. What more could a reader ask for in a book.

Looking forward to the next book in the series to see what the future holds for Eddie and Rachel.

I have voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC received from the author.

This is the third book in the series but the first one I’ve listened to! What a treat it was!!! The story has it all, a dark cursed warlock, gnomes, Imps, a secret paranormal investigation team, a human police investigator mixed up in the middle of all of it. I just loved it. Eddie, well want to say about Eddie, he really is the extreme, kinda sweet one minute and a first rate jerk the next but you can’t help but love him. This was one of the most entertaining books I’ve listened to in quite some time. Hannibal Hills was freaking awesome with the narration. Can’t wait to go back and get the first two to see how this all started

I was given this book at my request for free but the review is of my own. Eddie is back to deal with Rachael’s curse, a creature taking children, and a new company that wants his talents. Children are being taken without a trace and Eddie gets called to deal with the case finding that there’s a long history. He is fighting the darkness Rachael gave him and trying to win back the girl he cares for. Will Eddie find the creature before more children go missing? Can he ever get rid of the darkness? Another amazing tale.

Audiobook review: Dark Warlock is an entertaining adventure of a warlock charged with finding a missing child and encounters more of a world than he realized existed. The storyline is entertaining with plenty of action and banter. You’ll either love or dislike the Warlock as he definitely can come off as a bit of a sarcastic rompus. The narrator did a good job! Just when you think Eddie is never going to grow as a person, we start to see that maybe he will. It's going to be a long journey, don't you doubt it, but I think he's in danger of being a likeable guy - if you don't stick around too long.

This series is growing on me. Not so much talking to the audience in book three, which I liked. More imaginative wizardry and an nod to HP.

It's British. It had to happen. :)

Narrator: Hannibal Hills

I just love Eddie Lancaster, he may be a powerful warlock but he’s just so normal.
Eddie faces a difficult challenge in this one and although Ashley told him to stay away he finds he needs her help, will she help him?
Lots going on in this story, it’s interesting, entertaining and completely absorbing.
Once again the narrator does a fabulous job at bring Eddie to life.

This was a really good book! Eddie,a warlock, is hired to solve the case of over 600 kids who have dissapeared.Hannibal Hills was an excellent choice of narrator to take us on this jaunt into a magical world of imps and goblins. I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.

I have just recently come across this author, and I am so glad I have! The latest installment in the Arcane Inc. series has Eddie and Richards (yes, that Richards!) teaming up to go after a child abductor. Richards knows something strange is going on with the abductions, something up Eddie’s alley strange, and hires him to help with the investigation. This brings Eddie back into contact with those he has left behind in the previous book. But, like everything Eddie has been involved in recently, people will probably get hurt…or worse. Will Eddie be able to help the children or will he be too late? As every book goes by, I love this series more and more. This book was well-written, the pacing just right with great action and plot, and the characters are getting to the point they feel like family. If you like urban fantasy with magic and mayhem, this series is for you! Highly recommend!

Thanks to the author for the e-copy which I voluntarily reviewed. This same review will be posted on both Goodreads and Amazon.
