Haunting Horror Vibes!

Backstory:

Andrew Whelan along with his children, Sarah and Jake decide to leave the city of Boston after losing his wife in a car accident and moving out to the country to start a new life. Andrew, being an author, thinks that maybe being away from the city that he can finally get back into writing books so he fixes a room in the house where he can get his writing done.

Everyone starts settling into the old house, but it doesn't take long for things to start happening. Sarah knows right away that something is not right with the house so she talks to her friend Becca that lives in Boston about the strange things going on in the house. Sarah's brother, Jake in the meantime starts conversing with someone or something on a toy telephone which Sarah at the time thinks he just has an imaginary friend.

Becca decides to stay with Sarah for a weekend and she brings along a Ouija board to find out what could be haunting the house. Sarah doesn't believe in ghosts, but Becca talks her into using the board. After using the board, things take a twisted turn as they come to find out the house and property date back to the Salem witch trials.

Andrew keeps himself locked up in his study and seems to be oblivious to what is going on around him, but as more things start happening in the house, he has to come to grips with the reality that there is something wrong with the house and that it could be haunted!

What is haunting the Willow House? Who is Jake talking with on the toy telephone? What happens to the Whelan's while living there? No spoilers here as if you want to know more you will just need to read the book!

Thoughts:

The creepiness of the story just wrapped itself around me and the more I delved into the book the more haunting it became as there are twists, turns, and a suspenseful atmosphere that swirls within these pages.

When the Ouija board was introduced in the story is when the book went into major overdrive as the haunting increased in intensity within the storyline making it hard to put this book down!

The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat as when I became more hooked into the story I kept wanting to find out what exactly was haunting the Willow House. The story just grabbed me from the beginning and kept me in its clutches throughout the book. Giving this one four "Spooky Scares" stars!

Andrew Whelan, is a best selling author. He had just lost his wife Jennifer, in a terrible car accident. Andrew thinks the best thing for his family is to move from their home in Boston, to a new house, and new surrounding, where they might try to become a family again. Andrew, found this old house in the country, that he thought would be perfect for his family. Sarah, his fourteen year old daughter, did not want to move. All her friends were in Boston, and she would now have to attend a new school. Jake, his ten year old son, liked the house. Once the Whelan's moved in, strange things began to happen. Each one of the family members claimed to hear strange noises and feel the presences of some unknown entity in the house with them. When Andrew bought the old house, he did not know that is was cursed. The Whelan's are about to enter the gates of hell, and there is no looking back. Can Andrew, and his family defeat the evil that has surrounded this house for so long? This spooky story kept my interest from the very first page. The author did a very good job on the development of the main characters, and this help's to make the story stronger. Anthony M. Strong, is a good writer and a very good storyteller. I recommend this book.

Anthony M. Strong scared Me!! Yes, this haunted house/ghost story was so well told that I will never forget Willow House! It is right up there with the houses of 'Burnt Offerings' and many others! Read it! In fact LISTEN to it.
Check out my Video Review for it here: https://youtu.be/SKqTFGFbyXM

Andrew Whelan is an author with a 10 year old son; Jake and a 16 year old daughter Sarah, and they have just lost their Mother and wife in a snowy winter car accident.....their lives are about to change! Get ready for Willow House and it's occupants that they cannot see or touch, or can they?

When they are upended when Andrew purchases the 'old country mansion out in the country with a BIG assed scary tree at the beginning of the driveway' they move to Willow House and the country is nothing like Boston, plus Andrew is pushing himself to write his next scary Best Selling novel.

Sarah takes the bedroom up on the 3rd floor which is also the attic, the room is huge....and kinda scary; she loves it! She has gone 'to the dark side' which I mean she has become dressing, and acting like a Goth teen. Jake has the room below her. And upon unpacking Jake finds an old phone with a rotary dial, which is something he has NEVER seen, and it immediately reminds him kinda like one he saw at his grandparents. He becomes obsessed with this phone that is not even connected.....but someone is talking to him through it. When the phone actually rings one night in his bedroom, this is when he starts to hear 'a voice' that is familiar talk to him, and what is it they say? Author Strong in an author I had never read before, and going into this audio version I thought how is this book going to be Not like every other haunted house book out there?
But this became a great story from the first chapter! Do you remember a book that you had read a long time ago, where the writer described things (like the houses interior etc....) to you in a way that something just triggered those images in your brain and thoughts so well that you remembered them YEARS later? This is going to be one of those books, it reminded me of how drawn i was into the brownstone that the family lives in in Frank DeFelitta's "Audrey Rose" and that was over 40 years ago!!! That is how good Anthony M. Strong is at scaring you. I LOVED this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves a great haunted house or ghost story. There is NO graphic violence or sex. But it is still a great novel.
4.5 (ALMOST perfect....) 😧👻👻👻

Dysfunctional family, check. Relocation to a new house to start over, check. Weird, paranormal happenings, check. Yes, this book has all the props you've come to expect in a haunted house novel. However, none of that matters because this is a scary scary book. One that will send shivers down your spine and will exceed all your expectations. This author excels at this genre and that's a very rare thing, as it's extremely hard to do horror, especially of the haunted house variety, without being trite, overblown or downright boring. Mr. Strong has the perfect touch and is a master of thrills, chills and slowly creeping terror. Put him on your "must-read" list of horror authors immediately.

When author Andrew Whelan, his teenage daughter Sarah and his ten year old son Jake move out of Boston to an old farm house in the country, he's hoping for a fresh start for them all. After he lost his wife the year before in a car accident, he's found it hard going trying to deal with his and his kid's grief. The old farm house gives them a chance to heal from their loss and begin to move on in the hopes of a happy family life once more. Plus Andrew is hoping that he can pen his next best-seller. What they aren't counting on is the dark past the still haunts the house. An injustice done during the times of the Salem Witch trials has left an angry entity behind that has one thing on it's mind. Soon the family find themselves facing off against the angry spirit that wants nothing more than to exact it's revenge.

I am a huge sucker for a haunted house story. I just love them. I had this one sitting on my kindle and had totally forgotten about it. However, it did not disappoint.

Andrew is an author but he's struggled to write anything since his wife died, Sarah, his teenage daughter, is struggling with her grief and her entire persona has changed since her mother's death, while ten year old Jake is just trying to come to terms with why his mum is no longer around when he needs her. I really felt for the family. They're going through something so traumatic and awful and it really endeared them to me from word go. Sarah is the typical teenager and she absolutely hates the fact that they're moving out of the city into the middle of nowhere, though the final straw was because of an accident she was involved in. Jake is ten, he's excited for an adventure though he still has moments of sadness, and Andrew is just trying to keep his shit together for his kids.

The house is old and needs some work done, but it's already had the basics repaired so they could move in. It's your typical in the middle of nowhere, run down, multi story house, with creepy tree near the beginning of the driveway. The story actually opens with a scene, from memory, set in the 1640s? I could be wrong about the date though, I can't quite remember. So we sort of learn a little bit about the haunting from the very beginning. I think what I liked the most about this book was that it didn't rely on jump scare, so to speak. Creepy stuff happened but there was also an actual story line as well.

The story focuses mostly on Sarah, a little less on Andrew and only a small amount on Jake, though it made me nervous because Jake seemed to be targeted the most due to him being more believing in what he was being told. We get a glimpse into who Sarah really is and I honestly really enjoyed her character, she's just a teenage girl who is trying to navigate the terrifying road of being a teenager, all while trying to deal with the fact that her mum is gone. Andrew, I felt for, but he did annoy me, while I understand that he was being coerced, I felt like he should have been stronger than how he came across. When it surrounds Andrew, the story gave me The Shining vibes, and I wonder if that story gave Strong a bit of inspiration for this one? I love The Shining, so I was totally cool with it.

The story was a little cliched in parts, but I honestly didn't mind. Teenage girls doing seances, teenage girl being possessed by evil entity, evil entity trying to separate the family as much as possible to make it easier to pick them off. Yeah, there were cliches, but it still didn't take away from Strong's ability in his craft. The narration was just a super enjoyable thing to read and I just flew through the story. It had the right amount of creep, and it did it's job which was make me thing that I probably shouldn't read it at night before falling asleep.

One thing that I really enjoyed, was the ending, it actually made me wonder whether Strong was writing about his own past experiences in some old, run down farm house out in the middle of nowhere, and I think that really lends credit to his ability as a writer.

I thoroughly enjoyed this ghost story for what it was. If you like a good haunting that has great writing and an engaging plot, give it a go.

This book receives three stars from me because I did find it suspenseful and couldn’t wait to see what happened. That being said, some of the behaviors of the characters did not make any sense, and they were not that likable. It was however, a decent enough ghost, uh witching story and for the enjoyment of suspense, I am happy with my rating.

5 Stars

First of all although I love syfy, I've never much cared for Ghost Stories. But since Mr. Strong was the author and I was a big fan of the "John Decker" series I decided to give this one a try. I wasn't disappointed it kept my interest beginning to end. Am I a fan of Ghost stories now, probably not, but I will give this one 5 Stars.

Another great haunted house story. Another reason to not mess with a ouija board. You never know what might answer you or come through. With so much trauma in the Whelan family, it is no wonder they were victims of a haunting. As I was reading, I could hear the footsteps down the hall. I could feel the wind whip through the trees and I could smell the bitter smell of gasoline. As always Anthony M. Strong delivers a great book!

*Trigger warning: mention of suicide and grief

Lots, and I mean, LOTS of inspiration drawn from The Shining by Stephen King. After a family loses their wife/mother in a car accident and the teen daughter swallows a bunch of pills in a suicide attempt, a best selling author and his 10 year year old son move to an old farmhouse way outside the city.

The writer has a complicated history with drinking which the house is happy to oblige him with and the younger son is communicating with something disguised as his dead mother.

It's not a bad story, just not a strong one. The ending feels a bit wrapped and rushed, there could have been better conclusions. I like my haunted houses, hotels, etc, but I've read better.

One thing I don't want to do is giving away too much about this brilliant book.
I found myself so engrossed in it that I read it in one sitting, which is something I hardly do.
Hoping for a fresh start following the tragic death of his wife Andrew Whelan and his children Sarah and Jake get away from Boston.
What none of them know that the house is connected to the Salem Witch Trails and that their new home is haunted by a rather restless spirit.
Soon the family find themselves fighting this age old ghost in an attempt to survive.
If you have never read anything by Anthony M Strong and you love paranormal tales then this one comes highly recommended.

I am torn between 3 and 4 stars for this haunted house (or should I say haunted family) story. On the positive side, it is one very spooky ghost story complete with a vengeful spirit and a lonely, isolated location. Not all the main characters were likeable but they were generally interesting and fairly well fleshed out. The story moved briskly thanks to short chapters. On the negative side, I think the book was overly long by maybe 30 to 50 pages. I occasionally found myself bored and wishing the author would get to the point. Finally, the lack of editing got quite annoying. I can handle occasional typos such as we're instead of were and too vs. to but the poor editing got worse as I got deeper into the book. Strong is one of my favorite writers and I was appalled that he would let such a rough manuscript be published. It is one of his earlier works but it really isn't an acceptable excuse as even his earliest John Decker novels were quite well polished. In the final analysis, I decided on 3 stars as the poor editing pulled me out of the story so much. Still, it's a decent ghost story overall.

This book reminded me so much of the books I read as a teenager that started my obsession with horror. Andrew and his children Sarah and Jake need a fresh start after the death of their wife and mother. Seeking solitude and a chance to restart his writing career he buys an abandoned farmhouse. Almost immediately things start to happen and it's easy to pass of as an old house creaking. Soon it's no longer deniable. Sarah seems to be the only one taking this seriously. Definitely a spooky read, perfect for Halloween, and characters you care for. Nothing graphic or perverse, just good spooky fun.

I'm going to give four stars for The Haunting of Willow House as it kept me turning the pages and the story was intriguing. There were some scary moments and I wanted to find out if the outcome for the family would be good or very bad, based on the fate of other families who had lived in the house.
I do think a little more editing would help the flow of the story. There were mistakes such as Sarah's vice instead of Sarah's voice and starred instead of stared. This tended to pull me out of the story somewhat.
Otherwise a well-deserved four-star story.

A thrilling read

This book is unlike books I've read by Anthony M. Strong. This was a horror story, complete with an evil house! Perfect area for a Haunted house (just outside of Salem). The characters were ok, all self absorbed in their own problems after the death of their wife/mother. I wasn't sure how the book was going to end but it was excellent. Little slow at times but once it got going, it moved fast! Several editing issues, especially towards the end, but I don't hold that against the book but I know some people have problems with that. Overall a great read.

The Haunting Of Willow House

I rated this a 4 simply because I liked the story line. It was so much like a movie. At first I gave it a 5 but in all honesty I decided because it needed proof reading badly. I must admit the last chapter had me on the edge of my seat, and it must have had the same effect on the person who typed the story whether it was the author or who but the sentence structure got crazy. This is a good story for the younger set. All in all it was good and spooky.

Okay, so... I'm going to be honest: there were some parts of this book that made roll my eyes for how cliché they were, and some things that I saw coming all along. The book as a whole, however, was as gripping and creepy as it could be and I absolutely could not put it down. It was in my recommendations because I'm a Stephen King fan, and Mr. Strong didn't disappoint at all. Now I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of his work!

Another winner from a great writer.

Mr. Strong Succeeds once again, creating a wonderful story That keeps you riveted from beginning to end. His characters are well written and, through them, the story has more depth. I always look forward to reading one of his books because I know that the experience will be almost like actually being in the story. I can't wait for the next book.

For haunting books, this is a pretty good read. I actually jumped a couple of times.
Anthony and his daughter and son move into an old farmhouse to start over after his wife dies in a car accident. The farmhouse is close to Salem MA. (You will not learn about witch trials in this book) Just fun and scary.

Crazy scary

The book has all the great elements of horror - ghost, witch, creepy things in the shadows, a shower scene, possession, ouija board & big fat bulbous spiders in the cellar. I couldn't read fast enough cuz the story is fast paced. Great book for a great scare. I am not really keen on undead witches.

Haunting Horror

This was an intriguing, well written tale of a long dead witch who will not allow residents of her former home any peace. Very well written and I have to say that use of a rotary dial telephone, which was one of the fixtures of our home when I was a child made it even spookier! Lol I always knew that phone was no good!!!

Not his best

I’ve read most all of his books and this one is definitely not his best. Drags and the story line is pretty lame. The book also needs better editing. Several typos, grammar mistakes or words that just don’t fit in the sentence. The worst was a priest saying that he “didn’t know a SOLE”.
