Fear is all in the mind ...

But Mia’s nightmares become a reality when she and her troubled sister, Jamie, inherit their deceased uncle’s house and experience phenomena that extends way beyond a typical haunting. Only Mia’s infant daughter is aware of the sinister presence of a man that roams freely about the house, but it’s Jamie who has become the subject of the entity’s torment.

No one’s secrets stay buried for long, and the psychological abuse that the family are forced to endure soon turns physical, with the demon’s attachment to Jamie taking on a sexually violent nature. When the evil spreads beyond the boundaries of the house and wreaks chaos in the lives of those closest to Mia, she knows that she must uncover the house’s past, along with the identity of its ghostly inhabitant, in order to sever his hold on anyone who enters.

This book was a captivating horror story and the more I moved into the story, the more creepier the book turned out!

A little backstory for your readers:

The story revolves around two sisters (Mia and Jamie) and Mia's young daughter Louise. The sisters inherit the house that use to belong to their Uncle and they decide to move into the house. What they don't know, but soon find out that something else inhabits the home too. A demonic entity becomes attached to the sisters and causes havoc as they try to adjust to living in their Uncle's home.

At first I thought it was going to be a slow ride, but then the book jumped from slow motion to "boo spooky" within a few pages!

The author, Rae Louise pulls the reader straight out of reality and drops them into this house of fear! Lots of twists and turns throughout the book. Giving it four "spooky" stars!

The Fear by Rae Louise
Publisher: Black Rose Writing

Thanks to NetGalley and publisher Black Rose Writing for this ebook ARC of The Fear by Rae Louise.
Mia lives with her 5 year old daughter, Louisa and her 17 year old sister, Jamie and their dog, Casey.
Mia and Jamie’s mother, Vivian just moved into a care home due to an illness, early onset Alzheimers.
The girls end up inheriting and moving into their Uncle Billy’s house. They begin experiencing paranormal activity. First the dog, starts acting strange. And then Louisa starts talking about the shadow man who keeps coming into her room at night. And then things go from bad to worse and they need to come up with a plan on how to deal with the haunting of the house.
Will they figure out what is going on how to get rid of the evil that is terrorizing their family.

This book made me want to keep reading, it was extremely creepy yet kept me wanting to read more. It is a well written book. I wanted to read this book mainly based on the cover as well as the description.
I give this book 4 stars and I recommend you read it.

"Fear is all in the mind ..." This book. I've been on a thriller/mystery kick lately, so a good horror book was something I needed. Oh man, this was perfect! So creepy. So scary. I loved it. Do you like The Conjuring? Insidious? Well, here is the next book you need to read!

Mia’s nightmares become a reality when she and her troubled sister, Jamie, inherit their uncle’s house after he passes away. They experience phenomena that extends way beyond your typical haunting. Only Mia’s infant daughter is aware of the sinister presence of a man that roams freely about the house, but it’s Jamie who has become the subject of the entity’s torment.

No one’s secrets stay buried for long, and the psychological abuse that the family are forced to endure soon turns physical, with the demon’s attachment to Jamie taking on a violent and sexual nature. When the evil spreads beyond the boundaries of the house and wreaks chaos in the lives of those closest to Mia, she knows that she must uncover the house’s past, along with the identity of its ghostly inhabitant, in order to sever his hold on anyone who enters.

Most possession type stories can either fall flat or be incredibly scary, this one was definitely the latter! Reading this in the house, at night, home alone....not a good idea. Every creak and sound from the dogs freaked me out. It definitely had the feeling of The Conjuring 2, when the little girl in London is possessed by the demon. It preys on the weaker soul of Mia's sister and won't let go. If you're a believer in possession, then this one will send a chill down your spine and have you checking around every corner.

I give this 5/5 creepy stars!

A big thanks to Black Rose Writing for the ebook copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is my first book by Rae Louise but I have to say it will not be my last. She scared the crap out of me. This only words I can use to describe the story is Creepy and Scary. It started a bit slow but when it kicked in it kicked in hard and fast. If you like haunted houses and ghosts you will love this book.

Mia, her 5 year old daughter and 17 year old sister Jamie are looking for a better life when they inherit their Uncle's house. It's not a mansion or anything but much better then where they were living. That is until the demonic entity that comes with the house rears his ugly head and targets Jamie.

"The Fear" had a bit of a slow start to me but when I got into it I really enjoyed reading the book. It is a typical haunted house/entity type of book so what came through for me was the characters. I liked Mia quite a bit especially her struggle to raise her younger sister and her own daughter as a single mother. The strength of the book (for me) was the writing style and the plot. I found it to be a nice and easy evening read.

I was looking forward to a horror story after reading so many psychological thrillers. But sadly, I just couldn't get into this book. I found all the characters unlikable and confusing. Why would you still stay in a house where you were assaulted? It was a struggle to finish the book.

Thank you to NetGalley, Black Rose Writing and Rae Louise for a copy of "The Fear" in exchange of a fair and honest review.

"...odd things, like food turning moldy when it was fine, maggots raiding the cupboards; creatures trying to get in through the windows at night." (Louise).

For fans of Poltergeist, Insidious, and Ouija, this one is for you! The Fear will plunge you in to the lives of a family trying to find a fresh start after a terrible accident. Their fresh start holds more than they bargained for. With an interesting plot, and creep factor, this one will keep you turning the page.

The Plot: After having to move her mother, Vivian, in to a care home, Mia and her 17 year old sister Jamie inherit their Uncle Billy's old house. The sisters, and Mia's 5 year old daughter Louisa move in to the house, hoping for a fresh start after their mother, with early Alzheimer's, accidentally set fire to their home. It doesn't take long for their fresh start to turn in to a fresh nightmare. All three begin to experience odd and frightening occurrences, each different, tailored to their fears. As the nightmares worsen, the psychological effects begin to take their toll. Can Mia uncover the truth of the house's history and save her family before the entity can do more harm?

The Fear was an interesting, quick read with a good amount of creepiness to it. I felt like it read as if I was watching a horror movie. It had a good plot with a fair amount of chill factor to the "paranormal events". The characters were well written and I felt like their fear was well conveyed.

"Are you implying that this...thing...is preying on people's fears?" (Louise).

Mia was a decent "motherly" figure. I felt that she was wise and matured beyond her years, and for good reason. Her reaction to the paranormal occurrences was believable and justifiable. I admired the way she took care of her younger sister and enjoyed the way the book ended with her and the entity.

Jamie was a typical teenager. I assume the drinking age in England is younger than 21 since she was allowed to drink. She had a rough past and her worst fear was definitely used to torment her.

I don't have much else to say without giving away the main details of the book. I would rate it 4 stars and definitely felt a little "creeped out" reading at night time in the dark. It was a good read, and though not as scary as I would have liked it to be, it had a fair amount of horror details that kept my interest.

"Paul was convinced it was down to demonic activity but I insisted that he'd seen too many horror films." (Louise).

2.5 rounded up. This had the premise of the usual haunted house tale, but the atmosphere/scene-setting was minimal. The characters were not likable, and they vacillated between histrionic and oblivious. The momentum of the first half of the book built quickly and included some genuinely scary scenes. Unfortunately, the plot then seemed to go off the rails, spiraling into weak, inconsistent plot points to explain/confront the haunting.

This was a hair raising haunted house tale.
After a fire, Mia and her younger sister Jaimie move into their deceased Uncle Billy's house along with Mia's young daughter Louisa, and their family dog. Right away the dog starts behaving strangely and Louisa begins to see "The Shadow Man" in her room. At first Mia puts this down to stress from the fire, the move, not seeing her father enough, and grandma having to be put into care due to dementia. Unfortunately for Mia, none of these circumstances are the cause of the evil that is infesting the house. There is something unearthly there, and it knows what you are afraid of and how to use it against you.

From very early on when reading this book, two things become immediately clear: first, this is a particularly formulaic horror book, and second, Rae knows her genre very well indeed. It opens with a great, attention-grabbing, wince-inducing scene, which grips the reader firmly by the throat, in typical fashion, and, for those seeking a standard get-what-you-see supernatural horror thriller, it continues in the same vein relentlessly throughout.

“The Fear” is Rae Louise’s homage to the cliché-ridden 3-act horror genre, which she has undoubtedly studied at length. It features all the usual ingredients: the bickering sisters/single mum with no man on the scene, frightened dog, deranged neighbour who clearly knows more than he is given credit for, and the unlikely psychic, stirred in with the more contemporary horror elements of a child tormented by a malevolent supernatural force known only as “The Shadow Man”. Rae does a great job of creating and building the tension, as well as the villain’s chilly backstory. The book is very well written, and its timing well-crafted; although the metaphors are perhaps a touch unsophisticated, Rae is a good, professional author, whose book is of a significantly better quality than the average horror e-book by an establishing writer. She clearly indulges in any hint of a gore-opportunity (which is great fun, by the way), and there are some good set-piece moments, if perhaps not particularly original.

The realism afforded by the book and its cast’s gritty northern Britishness, in my opinion, assists the tension, bringing it into the real world, rather than taking us into its. However, the violent action sequences, when they occur, are perhaps a little too naturalistic and down-to-earth, which affects their impact – I feel these scenes could perhaps benefit from a touch more artifice and a lot more atmosphere. Although quite entertaining, there are no real surprises in a book which is pretty much a list of motions. Its concept, characters and story are all standard stuff, and there is little in the way of shock or deviation. As a result, the reader is left with an unsated feeling of familiarity – we have all read this book before, and there are a hundred movies like it on Netflix.

Still, if you’re looking for a formula horror, which, let’s face it, many of us are, you can (and probably will) do a lot worse than “The Fear”.

You’re not going to come across many better suburban terror novels than Rae Louise’s debut novel “The Fear”. Strapped for cash, Mia moves into the house previously owned by her recently deceased uncle with her younger sister, seventeen-year-old Jamie, and her own young daughter Louisa. This is supposed to be a fresh start for the family, but right from the start there is tension in the family dynamics which shape the progression of the novel. On one level it’s a haunted house story, but on the second it’s a family drama. Both are great, mixed together are terrific.

Mia herself is only 26, and so struggles to control her younger sister who has dropped out of school after failing her A-Levels. In the background their own mother is suffering from Alzheimer’s and is a brooding presence in the background of the novel. Also, in the background is Nathan, the father of Louisa and ex-partner of Mia, who has married someone else and is adopting her children. So even before anything supernatural happens Rae Louise paints a picture of a family with a lot of issues, problems and baggage and does so exceptionally well.

Things start going bump in the night quickly, but what makes this story different from most ghost stories of this type is the sheer ordinariness of it all. It’s a quiet street, not much going on, nosy neighbours and a bog-standard house. But we find out quickly that the house has a history. Before long Louise begins to be disturbed, thinks she is being watched in her sleep and starts wetting the bed. Teenage Jamie is also graphically targeted by the entity in some very powerful sexual scenes and soon things really spiral out of control.

I loved the down to earth nature of this beautifully told horror novel. Why didn’t they just leave the house you might ask? They had no money and nowhere to go! Rae Louise shows that great haunted house novels don’t need to be set in windswept mansions, dark lighthouses or cabins hidden in the forest, they can be equally effective in a council house which you or I could be living in. Terrific stuff from an author to watch out for.

Fear is a perfect title for this book because it will put fear into your mind and heart..

We follow Mia, her daughter Louisa, and Mia's sister Jamie throughout this story of horror. They recently had to put their mother into a care home for Alzheimer's disease, due to a incident at their original house. Once that happened they had to sell their home, and move into their recently passed Uncle's home where they could afford to live and take care of their mother. Except once they move in things begin to happen, strange things...

The first to experience this sinister feeling in the home is the youngest Louisa, who can see what she calls the "shadow man" and listens to him rant and rave about Mia, and Jamie. She begins to draw pictures and begins cursing at people in her life. (mind you she is very young only 5-6 years i believe). Mia works at a catering hall, where one day during a "halloween themed" party, Mia who already had a scare earlier in the day see's someone upstairs where no guests are allowed- as she follows this person upstairs she comes to a window to find her "mother" hanging from a tree- once someone else see's Mia running out of the building toward the tree- they chase her down and calm her down enough to see it is not her mother but an elderly woman who hung herself.
Now why is this detail so important? We find out later but the scare Mia had earlier that sent her into crazy mode- well she was in the bathroom and see's this figure who appears to be her mother except she's dead and screaming at her "THIS IS YOUR FAULT!" then as Mia tries to escape the horrid image she slips and is forced into the tub which is now filled with blood water and her mother's ghost is trying to drown her...

Sounds insane right? Well this book gives you chilling detail one after another, and the imagery it puts inside your head will have you running for the hills!
A must read for any fan of Horror!!

I received this book via NetGalley to give an honest review.

Talk about a ghost story! Mia and her family are going through a tough time and so when they move into an old family home they do not think about ghost! Who in their right mind would? Well Mia and her family learn about the shadow man and their stay in the home will not be pleasant.

Mia will stop at nothing to get her family back to normal, because lets face it fighting a ghost is tiring!
When you first start reading you may be like me and wonder why is this character Jamie talking to her mom like that and her mom just laughs. Well Mia is not Jamie's mom but her sister and Mia is taking care of Jamie.
They all start noticing things going on in the house via Louisa Mia's daughter is not herself, the nightmares are starting things just seem off. Mia feels she is going crazy until she finds help to rid the ghost of this house.
I really enjoyed how the ghost fed on the fear of everyone and made their fear come true in their mind, to me that was wickedly cool, but freaky. Everyone has a fear of some sort so to have it come to life in your mind makes it creepy.
For a ghost story it did its job in keeping me engage and wanting to finish the book so I could see what would happen. If you like ghost stories then check this book out.
Characters I felt were well written. The author did a good job with the way Jamie and Mia interacted with being sisters. Mia seems a bit wiser than 26 though she has a lot on her plate that I think made her grow up a bit more.
The interaction between Nathan (Louisa's) father and Mia is very grownup and isn't bitter like which I enjoyed.
Plot wise it was a steady page turner, there were no boring parts in my opinion.

I really did enjoy this book immensely. I am always searching for the 'perfect' ghost story and this comes pretty close!

The authors writing style really drew me in, an almost casual voice that ramps up the tension without you really realising it.
The characters were all extremely natural and sympathetic. None of the conversations felt forced, even though they were between characters of very differing ages.

The actions, and reactions, to the dramatic events made sense. At no point did I think "No one would ever do that, how silly" which often happens in supernatural/horror stories.

The way in which the atmosphere and tension slowly crept up meant that I just couldn't put it down. I could actually imagine the growing claustrophobia the characters were feeling.
Because certain events are not as they seem, for reasons you will understand after reading, it really kept me on my toes - did that happen? Can I believe what I'm reading this time?
Even though it kept me guessing it never got annoying - I just wanted to read that little bit more to find out! To me that is a sign of a talented author.

If I had to find fault it would be with the ending, unless there is a sequel planned! It was satisfying until reading the very last chapter, which was left as a kind of cliffhanger.

Rae Louise has managed to write a horror which is genuinely creepy and has suspension and action in spades.

3.5. If you like haunted houses (as I do) or demonic entities, then you will like this one. Sure, you’ll find lots of familiar aspects . But if you like this sub-genre, you’ll like how the author Rae Louise weaves some of these familiar features into a really good story. Some very good scenes that gave me the creeps. Louise gives a nice build up to a fast paced end. To me, there’s nothing wrong with a formula if it spooks and delivers! Real spoilers on my next comment, so please avoid:

The old haunted house tale is one of my favourites and this book faired okay. I enjoyed the read and there was at least one scene that creeped me right out. In fact I was scared to turn the lights off to go to sleep! The writing was detailed and painted a clear picture of what was going on. It felt like watching a movie at times. Where things fell flat for me was the writing sometimes got a little too descriptive and actually detracted from the flow of the plot. It's too bad the author didn't spend more time at the front end building suspense with smaller scares such as apparitions and unexplained occurrences. The story seemed to go from nothing to the incident with Jamie's friend. There were moments when I couldn't put the book down and other instances where I skimmed ahead to get on with it. The consistency just wasn't there. My biggest problem however was the ending...it was such a let down and way too predictable...cliché to be exact. It was an okay read and I liked it but just wasn't fabulous. Thank you to Netgalley and publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I must admit I was a bit apprehensive when I received this book. I thought it was a thriller and when I saw it was classed as horror I was a bit concerned because normally I don't really like this genre (too scary - I'm a big wuss!) HOWEVER, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down, finishing it in just two days. The book was so easy to read and the characters and story written so well that I didn't really have time to worry about the 'horror' aspect which incidentally was dealt with in a most believable way. Will definitely look out for more books by Rae Louise - Absolutely loved it!

Mia, daughter Louisa, and sister Jamie move into an inherited house in Yorkshire but it's not long before they wish they hadn't! Plenty of creepy things going on to keep any fan of this genre happy. Just little things to begin with before the real nastiness takes over. I loved it from the start, the way Mia struggles to keep her family together, including her mother who has dementia and lives in a home. Living with a stroppy teenager isn't easy at the best of times let alone when there is an unwanted presence in the house too! Very much a page turner which you won't want to put down. Described as really scary it ended up not being not scary at all to me. After a bit the action started and kept up at nice pace once it started. There are references to gross stuff like bugs, vomming, etc. This annoys me as this stuff are not scary things just gross. I wish that books & movies stay with the creepy vibes & spooky happenings not bombard readers & viewers with things of the yuck. I want to be scared & creeped out not have an upset stomach & get to the point I don't want to read or watch a movie anymore. That said this book does not do this too much. For those who like bit of a scare, & can do with minor language this book should be on your list.

As an avid horror fan, I ate up the pages as quickly as possible, all the while dreading what I would find as each horror grew progressively worse. Pulling from well worn genres such as Amityville and Insidious, The Fear sewed it all together to make it something new and wholly terrifying.

If you're weak of heart, this is one to read in the middle of the day, in a safe place. If you're like me and want that adrenaline rush of terror, I'd recommend reading on a stormy night with all the lights off on a Kindle. What a ride! ~George, 4 Fearful Stars

I have to admit, I'm a horror/thriller junkie. TV, movies, books, etc. Unfortunately, a lot of media within the genre falls flat, or so far below the mark, it's comical. This is not one of those times. This book blew me out of the water. I loved this as much as I love my Stephen King books. I had to read this with all the lights on. I cannot wait to see what else Rae Louise writes. Even if it's a different genre, I would read it, just because of the storytelling style!

Honestly, The Fear just wasn't for me. There was area's that almost caught my full attention, but they'd pass as quick as they came. I just couldn't submerge myself into the story plot. I hate to call myself old, but I feel like someone in their late teens / early twenties, would enjoy this book more. Is there a such thing as soft-core horror?

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. Wow, a fairly well written bizarre psychological thriller book. It wasn’t always very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish, but never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great psychological thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. It took me to the end before I caught on. Pretty creepy. That said I will still rate it at 5 stars.
