Serving the nation in uniform is a career choice. But have you ever wondered about the life of a partner of these brave men and women?

Married Quarter is a light-hearted glimpse into the world of the service family, through deployments, postings, illnesses and into retirement.

You will laugh and cry as Maria Augustus-Dunn tells you her story: from the perils of dining-in nights to meeting the King of Cambodia; from her disastrous attempt at making a cheesecake to seeing her husband off for a 12-month deployment; from arriving in Townsville in the middle of a cyclone to breaking down on the side of a mountain in Tasmania with a caravan in tow. Married Quarter takes you on a 21-year journey of the highs and lows of life as the spouse of a serving soldier.

This book is dedicated to the thousands of unsung heroes — the military spouses of Australia.

I grew up in the northern suburbs of Melbourne and married a soldier at the age of 29. What followed was the stuff books are made of! The following 21 years saw us through 9 postings, 2 deployments, 1 diplomatic posting, 15 jobs, countless job interviews, and 1 brain tumour (which I survived, by the way (spoiler alert!)).

More than nine years ago we decided to retire to the road and become permanent grey nomads. Sold up and gave away the whole lot in 2011 and have been travelling around Australia ever since.

I live on a steady binge diet of Game of Thrones, House of Cards, and Suits. At the moment my addiction of choice is Australian Survivor when we have television reception, that is!

I really liked Maria's writing style which made it such an easy read. Have to confess to sneaking out for a lunch break on my own so I could get a read in. It was really interesting to follow the ups and downs of a military spouse's life and Maria's husbands often very different take on things - ha ha. They both have such a great sense of humor. But this book is overall a love story; without the mush. The love and support Maria and Brad have given each other through the course of their married life to date is evident in the pages of this beautiful book. It was such a pleasure that I am sorry I have finished it. I don't know if I will ever find another book that will compel me to sneak out at lunchtime to read again.

I received this as an ARC from giveaways. What got me firstly its a real memoir but then it started in my local area at places I go to normally. Dapto normally is rubbished but here was the start. Maria writes about the truth of military lives for those who marry in. Certainly a book for those who were, are or will be part of this but also gives outsiders the chance to understand about this.

I could appreciate some of the stories that Maria wrote about in my own experiences of marrying into the Navy family. She is very courageous sharing some of her shenanigans, lol. I am not sure I would reveal all of my own experiences to the world in a book. I found the experiences in Cambodia interesting to read about, and relate to the Caravan stories as well. They certainly moved about more than my family did!
