Hiking Canada's Great Divide Trail

Rate this book

Trekking the Continental Divide from the U.S. border to Kakwa Lake is a demanding adventure. In this revised and updated guidebook devoted to Canada's 1,200-kilometer Great Divide Trail (GDT), Dustin Lynx helps hikers piece together the myriad individual routes that form a continuous trail along the Divide. Outlining the six major sections of the GDT, Lynx breaks the trail into 20-kilometer segments and describes the terrain and condition of each segment. These segments can be used to plan shorter trips along the GDT. Lynx's indispensable pre-trip planning advice will help long-distance hikers overcome daunting logistical challenges such as re-supply, navigation and access.

Obviously out of date in some places, but a good overview all the same

This would be an amazing trip. I've been on a fair bit of this entire trail already, from the US border in Waterton to a bit of the trail near Field. I haven't been on the Yoho main trails or the Jasper trails. My brother and I hiked to Berg Lake and Mount Robson in 2018 and over 30 years ago we did the Assiniboine to Sunshine route - I would dearly love to do that again - Marvel Pass has to be one of the most inspirational views in the world.
The thought of putting all of that together is very exciting. The description of Section G north of Robson sounds wonderful, certainly the ideal place during a pandemic.
As a book, well it's a trail guide. But it seems to have all the info you need. The detailed itineraries at the back are really helpful. I wish the topo maps were bigger or clearer or something, but then I think most backcountry enthusiasts love slowly pouring over full size topo maps like I do and it's a book, you can't fit those things in a book.
