Le 7 novembre 1987, Habib Bourguiba, 86 ans, président de la République tunisienne depuis trente ans, est destitué par son Premier ministre. En prenant le pouvoir, Ben Ali met ainsi fin à soixante ans d'une carrière exceptionnelle, d'un destin hors du commun patiemment construit par un homme convaincu de son génie.Pour comprendre le personnage et son rôle historique, les auteurs ont fouillé les jeunes années et retracé les étapes d'une lutte de trente ans pour la libération de son pays, suivies par trente ans d'un règne sans partage durant lequel il fut à la fois un grand réformateur et un autocrate têtu. Fragile équilibre dont la précarité se manifeste dès l'entrée de Bourguiba en maladie. Viennent alors les années de lutte pour la succession, où s'exaspèrent les contradictions d'un pays asphyxié par un « chef suprême » vieillissant.
La Tunisie d'aujourd'hui est-elle ou non son héritière ? II faut revisiter l'histoire de cet homme qui a marqué son pays et son siècle pour tenter de répondre à cette question.

Sophie Bessis (Arabic: صوفي بسيس‎) is a Tunisian-born French historian, journalist, researcher, and feminist author. She has written numerous works in French, Spanish, and English on development in the Maghreb and the Arab world, as well as the situation of women. A history scholar and former editor-in-chief of the weekly magazine Jeune Afrique, she is currently a research associate at the Institute for International and Strategic Relations (IRIS) in Paris and Deputy Secretary General of the International Federation of Rights Leagues (FIDH). She has taught the political economy of development at the Department of Political Science at the Sorbonne and in the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (INALCO). She is a consultant for UNESCO and UNICEF, has carried out numerous missions in Africa.
