Harper Harlow #6

Ghostly Wrecks

Rate this book
The dog days of summer are here and the heat isn’t the only thing oppressing the populace in Whisper Cove. No, it seems that feelings – the big L-word, to be exact – are weighing heavily on Harper Harlow and Jared Monroe. Both halves of Whisper Cove’s favorite couple are both desperate and terrified to say it.

Personal issues are hastily shoved aside when a boat slams into the beach during a violent storm and Jared and Harper are on hand to help the injured mother and father, as well as their confused daughter, Hayley. Harper and Hayley instantly bond and when the girl admits to hearing voices on the deck before the boat mishap, the event turns from an accidental tragedy to something more nefarious.

During her conversations with the traumatized child, Harper starts to suspect that something paranormal visited the boat the night of the wreck. She believes a legendary Whisper Cove ghost – one she’s never had the privilege of seeing herself – bore witness to the truth.

Harper is determined to find out what caused the boat crash – and exactly who is threatening young Hayley’s future – and she’s taking the entire motley crew with her for what she’s certain will be a bumpy ride.

For his part, Jared is doing his best to hold things together and maintain order, but when Harper puts herself in danger without worrying about the ramifications he knows it’s time to put his foot down.

Hold on for adventure, because Harper and Jared about to track down a ghost from the past in hopes of securing one girl’s present and future. Along the way they might put their own destiny in danger when a killer sets his sights on Harper … and Jared is determined to risk everything – including himself – to protect her.

I was torn in terms of a rating for this. In terms of the main storyline--the mystery, I would give this four stars. It's a fun, light read, mostly well-written with a few stray editing oversights but nothing egregious. The story flows well and I've enjoyed this series.

On the other hand, in terms of the relationship between Harper and Jared--I would give this 1 star. Jared's overprotectiveness of Harper is becoming pathological. I could overlook it while Harper continued to do as she pleased in spite of it, but in this book that changes in a rather disturbing way. Jared treats her like a child, in spite of the fact that she's an adult who makes a decent living for herself and co-owns her own business. She not only allows it, she alters her behavior to please him even though he's being ridiculously unreasonable. At one point, he 'punishes' her for doing something he didn't like, saying that 'it's for her own good' and she cries and swears she'll never do it again. Thus continues the thread of the romantic sub-plot where she alters her behavior more and more to please Jared. That's not cute, it's not funny, it's not sweet and it's certainly not romantic. It's dysfunctional as h*ll, extremely disturbing and borderline abusive. This story makes a pretty good textbook on how psychological and emotional abuse begin in relationships. If you're in a relationship that the interaction between Jared and Harper reminds you of--seek help.

While I enjoy the mysteries, the humor and the paranormal aspects of these stories, I'm not sure I'll read any more books by this author solely because of what passes for 'romance' in this series.

Harlow is a 28 year old woman

When this series started, Harper was alone but capable. She had a best friend sidekick, knew her worth (to doubters and others), took risks in her job, was strong/independent (think of her exploring and searching for Quinn), and ran a successful business.
In the past couple books, she has had her boyfriend become a parental figure she has to get permission from and share all - even though he does not. Zander has encouraged, even warned of this behavior. Harper is always apologetic for her "shortcomings" and oh so grateful and worried - constantly - about her status, how Jared perceives her, if she is allowed or authorized to feel and react in certain ways.
She is becoming more pathetic each book and constantly wins Jared over and reaffirms their relationship through the physical. Seriously, we read about her beauty, her plans for the bedroom/seduction, and how she needs to stay on Jareds good side.
I hope that the next book gets better or I am done.
This isn't romance.

So much fun!

Harper sees ghosts. She stopped caring about what others thought and opened a ghost hunter business with her bestie, Zander. Enter Jared, the new detective in town who doesn't believe in anything he can't see. Of course, sparks fly when they meet over a dead body.

I absolutely love the characters in this book. Harper is awesome - strong in that she doesn't let anyone else tell her what to do or how to live her life, but vulnerable in that her only true friend is Zander, who she both lives and works with. Zander is absolutely ridicilous (and seriously loveable), but 100% pro-Harper, no matter what. They are joined at the hip, and anyone entering into a relationship with either has to accept that. Jared figures that out, and actually does pretty well at accepting Zander's position in Harlow's life. Every one of the side characters are also great, well developed and multi-dimensional.

Episode 6: No dead body this time, just a shipwrecked boat on the beach. Why are there bullet holes in the deck? An old ghost who hangs around the water and helps boaters reach shore in storms might have seen what really happened, if Harper can only find him.

Harper and Jared are attending a retirement party at a restaurant on the beach.. When Harper notices a boat has wrecked on the shore.. The family on the boat is alive, and are rushed to the hospital.. The little girl that was on the boat heard a ghost, so now Harper is on the hunt for a guy who died decades ago and is a local legend said to help boaters if they are in danger..
When they find him or rather he finds her he alludes to the fact that while Harper can see some ghosts their are many more around that she can't see yet..
Also a secretary that works for the police station is going after Jared and making super snarky comments about Harper, so they have to deal with that situation.. and the fact that the family on the boat has some heavy secrets.. bullet holes were found, but the husband and wife claim that someone must have come and shot the boat after it wrecked..
This was another great book, and I look forward to reading more..

Entertaining paranormal cozy mystery series

This is an entertaining paranormal cozy mystery series. A fun cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Harper Harlow and her best friend Xander on a company called ghost hunters Inc. They hunt ghost and help them travel to the other side. Harper can see and talk to ghosts And Xander has been her best friend since kindergarten. He’s a bit flamboyant and his boyfriend Sean is a new addition to their group. Harper‘s boyfriend Jared has been around for a few months and the whole crew gets along really well. Jared is a police detective in the local police department and unfortunately on occasion Harper and Xander get tied up in following a ghost from a crime that happened recently that Jared and his partner who happens to be Zanders uncle have to investigate. It’s always a entertaining and ruckus story filled with if you ghost encounters lots of entertainment a bit of Snark and a good mystery to boot. Check it out

A wreck, a ghost and a girl in trouble

Harper spots a boat being storm wrecked by the restaurant where she's attending a retirement party with Jared. Rushing to help she pulls Hayley Reiter age 13 from the boat and goes with her to the hospital while Jared and his colleagues hunt for her parents.

Hayley tells Harper that she heard two men arguing with her parents before they wrecked but when her parents are brought in they both deny it and claim Hayley is imagining things.

Strange things start to occur, however; bullet holes are found in the deck, a dodgy bookie goes after Harper, Hayley's Uncle Chuck's body appears and the ghost of the legendary Jack Corgan appears to help Harper work out what happened.

It twists and turns as the gang work as only they can to solve the case and protect the innocent.

Love is in the air

Harper and Jared are at the point they know they love one another, but are to scared to say it to each other. So easy to relate to that part of the book. The new mystery revolves around a family that has crashed upon the shore and nothing makes sense. Someone's story is based on truth, but figuring it out in time, before someone gets killed will be the trick. Harper and Zander are in the crosshairs, but can Jared and Shawn keep them safe and figure out the truth in time to keep them from harm? Another mystery within the book is a new ghost that knew Harper from when she was younger. Will he be able to help solve the mystery while also answering questions about the past?

Ghostly Wrecks - A Harper Harlow Mystery Book 6,

This was a great story. I was kind of lost in the beginning but figured out the misdirection and twists and turns this book throws at you. Kept me guessing till the end. Just when you think you've got it, something else happens and your stumped . Lots of fun with our main character. Introduced new people of course and our writer had me laughing out loud again! Some may not like her humor but I think she is great fun and always gets me laughing! Fun with great story telling. What could be better? She even had more romance in her stories but no graphics. Just suggestions and innuendos that work well.

Passive Aggressive...

Yeah I can't get over the emotional abuse in this book.

This is a common trend in all the author's (both here and on Amanda M. Lee) books.

Treat heroine like a child? Check.
Heroine adjust behavior to suit love interest? Check.
Punish heroine until she does what love interest wants? Checkity check.

This is disturbing. No woman (real or fictional) should be in this kind of relationship.

I cannot even root on the fact that they said "I love you" in this book...

I really am concerned for the author and her outlook on relationships.

I enjoy this light, fun read & love to escape to the world of Harper & Jared! This book has an interesting & surprising plot, is well written & Harper & Jared’s eyes are opening to the real love they have for each other. I mean, I know these are characters from Ms Hart’s abundant imagination but, like I said, I love to escape & let the fun rule. Remember the first fierce days of being in love? Maturity is slowly coming to this series😊

Ghosts past

Harper and Jared, along with Zander are at it again. This mystery leads to a ghost that Harper only thought she'd never met. Turns out she knew him, via her grandfather, when she was very little. Turns out Jer grandfather wasn't her first ghost she ever say. With a little help from her past and her current group, they set out to figure out the mystery of what really happened on that boat.
Told from both main characters POV. Highly recommend.

Aahh! It’s like Harper is getting more and more annoying. She never listens and does whatever she wants with no regard for her safety. If I was Jared I’d walk away, she just goes against everything he says to be difficult not to help. Every thing she did in this book could have waited, but no she had to do it her way. It’s really starting to get on my nerves that no amount of whitty banter will fix.

Cute

The madness of Harper and Zander continues, often funny but occasionally it becomes a little too silly and immature. The romance between Harper and Jared is sweet, and a little less cloying than previous books. The plot twists and turns to surprising places, so all in all, it's fun and readable.

Great read!

I love the characters, the dialogue, and the plots of this entire series. Hart writes intriguing and hilarious mysteries, and I am a huge fan of this series, as well as the others. I can hardly wait to find the answers to the questions Harper has for Jack.. I know they will lead to another fascinating book.
Looking forward to reading more...

I love the World of Harper Harlow!!

Mobsters, ship wrecks, old ghosts... The perfect recipe for a great mystery!
Harper and Jared are progressing nicely in their relationship, as are Zander and his love interest. Of course, they are letting some minor insecurities drive them a bit nutty.
Will they be able to get through this mystery unscathed? Read the book and find out!

Fabulous as always! I loved the development of Harper and Jared's relationship. I also really like Shawn and Zander, and the four of them really have a great dynamic. The mystery was great and helped to keep me engaged.

I really hope that Jack appears in future books because I really want to know about his wives!

Overall, a fun addition to the series!

These are good easy books for a quick light hearted read. If I was to complain about anything it would be the repetition of a few phrases.
Everyone seems to roll their eyes frequently. They all roll their necks until it cracks. Bark out a laugh and narrow their eyes to dangerous skits. Which one I’ve noticed it seems a little distracting.
But that said I do still enjoy them.

“You ain’t seen nothing yet.”

Harper and Jared get more than they bargained for when a shipwreck interrupts what should be a fun night. When things with the boat don’t add up, Harper and Jared are once again looking for answers and trying to stay one step ahead of danger. Awesome read! Enjoy!!!

Another fun romp

This series is a treat for so many reasons, and this particular book is no exception! The primary characters are likable; GHI capers can be depended on to add humor; the relationships are tight-knit and loyal; and, the mysteries are engaging. This story leaves one question unanswered: not if, but how much Tina and Jack will be a problem!

Not certain I'll continue the series. Lots of control issues. Lots of repeated storylines. Lots of stereotypes for Gay men. Decent mysteries with a decent resolution this time. However, Harper really doesn't think things through and seriously becomes a petulant child when she doesn't get her way with things. Yep, I'm done.

Great story

Love the characters, Harper and Hayley were the best. I wasn't sure where this story was headed after the boat crash, but of course a body showed up. Lots of twists and turns to figure out what was going on. What were the survivors of the boat crash hiding? Things were not adding up but I had faith Jared would figure it out.

Happy reading.😁

Boat accident turns into mystery

During a big storm, Harper spots a boat that hit a rock. Something is off about the situation. And Harper finds out something about her gift.
LOL at the interaction among 4. Only germaphobe Zander would think of a toilet brush as a weapon...

Great return.

It's been a while since I caught up with Harper, Zander and the crew. It appears as if very little has changed, murder, mayhem, ghosts and giggles. Still the great stoties I remember.
