Zombi literally means wresting. This is an account of a youth from interior Maharashtra. He fights his way through just to complete his secondary education. His landless father tilling lands for others, thinks his son`s education not only unaffordable but unwise also, He helplessly watches his mothr permanently fated to thankless labour, contineously working for an evergrowing family deep in the cluthes of customs and superstitions. He had to wrestle with hardships and hunger to complete his school education. This autobiographical novel is an authentic tale as much of the author and his family as of any of the hundreds of landless families from rural interiors.

About the author

Yadav was one of the early writers of Marathi Gramin Sahitya (literature pertaining to rural life in Maharashtra).
His novel "Zombi" (झोंबी) (meaning “fight against all odds”) won a Sahitya Akademi Award in 1990.The novel is an autobiographical story of a young boy, his loving mother,his life of utter poverty, and his eagerness to receive education.
Yadav wrote three sequels to autobiographical "Zombi" (झोंबी): "Nangarani" (नांगरणी) (meaning “cultivation of the soil”), "Gharabhinti" (घरभिंती ) (meaning “housewalls”), and "Kachawel" (काचवेल) (meaning “a vine of pieces of glass”)

३० नोव्हेंबर १९३५ रोजी त्यांचा कोल्हापूर जिल्ह्यातील कागल येथे जन्म झाला होता. आनंद यादव यांनी कोल्हापूर व पुणे येथून आपले शिक्षण पूर्ण केले‌. आकाशवाणीत त्यांनी काही काळ नोकरी केली. पुणे विद्यापीठात प्रपाठक म्हणून नियुक्ती झाल्यावर तेथेच मराठी विभाग प्रमुख म्हणून ते निवृत्त झाले.

मराठी साहित्यातील ग्रामीण संबंध अधिक ठळक करण्यासाठी ज्या साहित्यिकांची नावे आवर्जून घ्यायला हवीत, अशांच्या यादीत यादव आपोआप जाऊन बसले. स्वातंत्र्यपूर्व काळातील ग्रामीण साहित्यापेक्षा यादवांच्या पिढीतील लेखन वेगळे होते, कारण त्यात वास्तवतेचे भान होते. ग्रामीण निसर्गवर्णनापेक्षा, तेथील जगण्याला असलेली दु:खाची किनार आणि दाहकता आहे.

नटरंग या कादंबरीवर त्याच नावाचा मराठी चित्रपट निघाला होता.

‘ग्रामीण साहित्य : स्वरूप व समस्या’ आणि ‘मराठी साहित्य : समाज आणि संस्कृती’ यांसारख्या पुस्तकांच्या रूपाने समीक्षालेखनही केले. चार कवितासंग्रह, दहा कथासंग्रह, पाच लेखसंग्रह, सात कादंबऱ्या, आत्मचरित्राचे चतुष्टक, आठ समीक्षात्मक पुस्तके असे लेखन त्यांच्या नावावर जमा झाले. विविध ठिकाणच्या पाच ग्रामीण साहित्य संमेलनांचे अध्यक्षपद यादव यांना मिळाले. मध्यमवर्गीय संवेदनांच्या बाहेर जाऊन साहित्यात नंतर येऊ घातलेल्या दलित साहित्याला यादव यांच्यासारख्या लेखकांनी मार्ग दाखवण्याचे काम केले. महाबळेश्वर येथील अ. भा. मराठी साहित्य संमेलनाचे अध्यक्षपद मिळाल्यानंतरही त्यांच्या ‘संतसूर्य तुकाराम’ या कादंबरीतील कल्पनाविलासाला जाहीरपणे विरोध झाला. तो एवढय़ा टोकाचा होता, की त्यामुळे यादव यांना 2009 संमेलनाचे अध्यक्षपदही भूषवता आले नाही.

There are some stories poignant, inspiring, revealing hardships of life and unending struggle. It's one of those story, a true story at that. Reading it one feels grateful for what he has and what he is capable of if determined. I read when I was still in school, it was the best time to read it. I'm sure one day I'll pick it up again and this time the experience will be different. It on any account leaves reader sad and provokes thinking that our so-called-social norms are superficial and hollow, that our values, beliefs and tradition need re-thinking. It makes mind challenge the stratification of Hindu system and the restrictions put on people was a huge error of humanity. Btw, it's everywhere, not just India, that social norms went wrong leaving certain people fall pray to it. The forms are different and so were the impacts but it exists. नुकतेच आनंद यादव यांचे आत्मचरित्र झोंबी वाचून झाले. आत्मचरित्राला पु .लं. देशपांडे यांनी प्रस्तावना दिली आहे प्रस्तावना वाचतानाच आनंद यादव यांनी केलेला संघर्ष दिसून येतो. पु.ल ची प्रस्तावना म्हणजे त्यांच्या विनोदी लेखन शैलीच्या पेक्षा वेगळी वाटते. शब्द भंडारातून एकेक शब्द शोधून काढून प्रस्तावनेत उतरवलेला आहे असे वाटत. खरंतर तो शब्द संघर्ष वाटतो परंतु जसे जसे आत्मचरित्र वाचायला सुरुवात होते तो संघर्ष अन्द्या च्या खऱ्या आयुष्यात दिसून येतो. अठरा विश्व दारिद्र्य पाचवीला पुंजलेल्या कुटुंबात लेखकाचा जन्म झाला. फक्त ब्राह्मणाच्या मुलांनी शिकावे आणि कुळवाड्याच्या मुलांनी शेनी च उचलावी या सामाजिक परिस्थितीत लेखकाचे बालपण संघर्ष करत होते. जिथं पोटाला मिळणे हा हक्क नव्हता त्या ठिकाणी अन्ध्या ने शिक्षणासाठी हक्क धरला . अन्ना च्या ठिकाणी माती खाणे आणि पुस्तकाच्या ठिकाणी पाठीत धपाटे खाणे या कौटुंबिक पार्श्वभूमी त संघर्ष करत अक्षर ओळख करून घेतली. शिक्षण म्हणजे भिकर चोट नाद असे वाटणाऱ्या स्वतःच्या वडिलांसी वैचारिक तसेच भावनिक संघर्ष करून त्यावर लेखकांनी मात केली . शेती की शिक्षण यामध्ये लेखकाला प्रचंड संघर्ष करावा लागला यामध्ये शेवटी विजय हा शिक्षणाचा झाला. संगतीच्या वाईट सवयीवर शिक्षणातील विचारानेच मात केली. शिक्षणासाठी काबाडकष्ट करून आपला जन्म हा शेतीत मर मर मरून काम करण्यासाठी नाही हे लेखकाने वेळीच ओळखले होते. डझन भर भावंडं त्यांचे पोटासाठी होणार हाल हा संघर्ष मनाला वेदना देऊन जातो. कौटुंबिक पार्श्वभूमी बरोबरच मुलाच्या आयुष्यातील शिक्षकाची भूमिका ही किती महत्त्वाची आहे हे त्यांनी अचूकपणे हेरले आहे. वाचनाचा वेड हे त्यांच्या आयुष्यामध्ये आगी सारखे भडकलं होतं, लागिर झालं जी म्हणजेच काय याची प्रचिती येते. लेखकाने फक्त शिक्षण संघर्ष च रंगवला नाही तर त्यावेळी ची सामाजिक, आर्थिक परिस्थिती तसेच कायमचे दारिद्र्य याचे वास्तव अस्सल ग्रामीण भाषेमध्ये मांडले आहे .त्यामुळेच ग्रामीण पार्श्वभूमी असणाऱ्या वाचकांना ही आत्मकथा आपलीशी वाटते . परिस्थितीमुळे मी शिकलो नाही किंवा शिकू शकत नाही असे म्हणणाऱ्यांना झोंबी हे मोठे उदाहरण आहे . संघर्ष करीत एस एस सी उत्तीर्ण झालेल्या लेखकाचे त्यानंतर शिक्षण कसे पूर्ण झाले याची उत्सुकता लागून राहते.

ही संपूर्ण आत्मकथा दहावी पर्यंत शिक्षण घेण्यासाठी लेखकाला खाव्या लागलेल्या खस्ता ह्या भोवती फिरते. दारिद्र्य,अंधश्रद्धा आणि वडिलांचा शिक्षणाला असलेला प्रखर विरोध ह्या विरुद्ध ठामपणे उभे राहत आनंद यादव आपले शिक्षण पूर्ण करतात. लेखकाची शिक्षणाबद्दल असलेली तळमळ अन त्यासाठी त्यांना कौटुंबिक, आर्थिक आणि सामाजिक स्तरावर कराव्या लागलेल्या संघर्षाची ही कहाणी आहे. लेखकाने ग्रामीण मराठी भाषेतून हे आत्मकथन केल आहे. त्यामुळे बऱ्याच शब्दांचा (विशेषकरून शेतीशी संबंधित) अर्थ कळत नाही. ह्या पुस्तकातील अपरिचित शब्दांची सूची करून त्यांचे अर्थ शोधण्याचा मानस आहे.

What horrified me about this book is unfiltered, unapologetic narration of brutal reality of Indian small towns. The male dominance, the socially-accepted dominance of husbands over their wives, the unjust behaviour of women toward each other originated from centuries of helplessness, love for the brothers and sisters, pity for the mother: everything is there. The will to continue studying despite the brutality of his father is thankfully not relatable for me and I guess this is a victory of Indian society in a way. But I know there are kids who will find this book “their story” even after all these years and that’s something we as a society need to focus on.

It was a painful read and that’s why I loved it so much. Anand getting final approval to study for the last year from his father felt like a victory to me but I could not stop asking myself one question over and over again, “how can you be so unkind toward your own son?” And I don’t think there is an answer to this question.

पुस्तक वाचून झाल्यावर त्याच्या शीर्षकाचा खरा अर्थ उमगतो.
शिक्षण पूर्ण करण्यासाठी प्रतिकूल परिस्थितीशी जिद्दीने केलेली ती झुंज आहे. लहानपणापासूनच शेतीची कामे करून केलेली शाळा, वडिलांचा सततचा विरोध, शाळेची फी भरण्यासाठी, पुस्तके मिळवण्यासाठी खाल्लेल्या खस्ता, केलेले कष्ट वाचताना मन अस्वस्थ होते. पण एकूणच त्याची शिक्षणासाठीची आवड, आणि शिक्षण पूर्ण करण्याची जिद्द, परिस्थीती बदलण्याची ओढ अत्यंत प्रेरणादायी आहे.

बिगारी ते मॅट्रिकपर्यंतच्या प्रवासात नायकाला भोगाव्या लागणाऱ्या असंख्य दुःखांचा आणि अगणित अडचणींचा इथे उल्लेख करण्यात आलेला आहे.यामध्ये त्यांनी २-३ मुलानंतर आईच्या-ताराच्या- मनाविरुद्ध झालेली मुले, आधीच गरिबी असल्याने एवढ्या जणांमुळे डबघाईला येत चालेलं त्यांचं कुटुंब, यामध्येच 'हम करे सो कायदा' या थाटातच वागणारा त्याचा शेतकरी बाप हि पात्रं आपल्याला कथानकात गुंतवून ठेवतात.लेखकाने आपल्या आईवडिलांचा उल्लेख एकेरीच केलेला आढळतो. 'मातृदेवोभव ,पितृदेवोभव' हे ऐकण्याची सवय असलेल्या कानांना जन्मदात्यांचा असा उल्लेख वाचल्यावर भुवया अनपेक्षितपणे उंचावल्या जातात.

What is poverty? How does it feel? I thought I knew it. I didn't! I hope nobody ever goes through such hardships as the author of this book. It is so inspiring and makes you appreciate every little thing you have. It pushes you to become a better man. This is the best book I read this year. Totally worth it. The writing is excellent. किनवट आणि कागल, नांदेड आणि कोल्हापूर, 2000 आणि 1948, शेतमजूर आणि शेतकरी, घरच्यांची परवानगी आणि घरच्यांचा विरोध... एवढाच काय तो फरक... बाकी सगळा संघर्ष अगदी जवळून पाहिला. वाचताना मन अगदी उद्विग्न होत होतं, पण कुठेतरी लेखक चुकीचं करतोय असं राहून राहून वाटत होतं.
एक आत्मचरित्र म्हणून जे काही लिहिलंय त्यात सत्यतेची झलक असली की त्याचं सोनं होतं. या पुस्तकाच्या बाबतीत नक्की हेच झालंय.
