On the mysterious Summer Isle, siblings Max and Carter discovered the magical land where the villainous Pied Piper led the children of Hamelin centuries ago. They were trapped outside of time in a never-ending clash against a vicious rat army. After a desperate battle with a cruel soul-stealing magician, Max and Carter found themselves Max with their newfound allies (human and trollson alike), Carter with . . . the Piper.

Now Max is determined to reunite with her lost brother, restore her parents’ stolen souls, and escape the Summer Isle once and for all. But the wicked Grannie Yaga doesn’t intend for the siblings to leave without a fight.

But what role will the Piper play when all is said and done—and can he redeem himself from his own dark choices when his secrets are finally revealed?

This book is the perfect ending to the trilogy. It's filled with the same magic and heartfelt emotion as the other two in the series. And after waiting a year to read this one, Cody cleverly gives enough information that the reader won't feel the need to reread the previous two books to be caught up on the action. And there's plenty of action as well as Carter and his sister, Max, and their friends from New Hamblin fight evil to bring Summer Isle back to summer. The whole series is perfect for fantasy-loving middle grade and even young adult readers. This adult enjoyed the story plenty!

Cody, Matthew The Piper’s Apprentice (Pied Piper #3), 263 pgs. Alfred A. Knopf, 2017. $16.99. Language G; Mature Content: G; Violence: PG (battles, death).

Carter is traveling with the Pied Piper for better or for worse on the Summer Isle, which doesn’t seem to be living up to its name. Carter is separated from his sister, Max, and their stories alternate back and forth as he journeys to the Magician’s Landing, while Max is determined to find her brother. Baba Yaga, the witch, has evil designs for the Summer Isle, the first of which is to find and destroy Carter. The Piper’s agenda is rather more mysterious.

This is the concluding book in the Secrets of the Pied Piper trilogy. All of these storylines weave together to create a satisfying ending to the trilogy. There is plenty of adventure as battle lines are drawn. Matthew Cody does a good job reminding us about plot points, so if you’ve been waiting for this book for awhile, you can still dive right in. Pull up your favorite reading spot and immerse yourself in rats, ogres, and creepy gray men.

This book is the final resolution of the climatic struggle of good versus evil set in a modern world with fairy tale characters. The children, Max and Carter, are at various times teamed up with different people from the Summer Isle, a magical land of youth and sunshine. Unfortunately, the land is changing due to the scheming of the witch, Grannie Yaga .

Max is charging forward in an attempt to fulfill several quests, mainly to reach her little brother, but is sidetracked often by the need to help others. Noble, but of course it interferes with her main quest.

Carter is dragged along by the Piper, who is attempting to teach him magic, which is great, but the boy is suspicious of the Piper. But the lure to learn magic is great and the reader has to wonder - will the boy turn to evil out of the need to learn magic, or will his upbringing and personality conquer and help him help the good guys?

An excellent read for the junior set!

What a great way to end this trilogy! Villains became heroes, the extreme evil was defeated, and all was made right!

I literally couldn't put this book down! I finished it riding my exercise book! It was that good!

One paragraph really had me thinking!

"Carter had asked the Piper if it (magic) wasn't like the butterfly effect, whereby quantum physics stated that the flap of a butterfly's wings, could set off a series of seemingly random events, that led to a hurricane of the the other side of the world. A hidden connectivity to the universe."

I have always been fascinated by that question! Maybe one day, the answer will be discovered!

I heartily recommend The Secrets of the Pied Piper trilogy!

I think you will enjoy this new take on an old fairy tale!

The book was (to put it short) amazing! I like how, when certain things happen, it ended in a way that wouldn’t change the main characters beginning situation but, help him evolve into the true hero he was in his mind. The thing I appreciated the most about the ending, (without getting into spoilers) it taught a lesson that:”there are some things in life that you never expect, some sudden, and some scary. But you must remember to stop for a moment, and just realize how much of a blessing our lives REALLY are.

This book was the best out of this trilogy. I liked how the villan in this series, had good in him, too. And how the characters didn't kill him, he eventually changed his ways, and sacrificed himself for his friends.
