Jamie is frustrated that his parents love to go shopping, just for the sake of it. They frequently go on shopping sprees, returning with goods that they simply don’t need. Jamie pleads with them to stop buying so much wasteful stuff, when they already have so much they don’t use (and probably never will). His parents stop and think about their actions. With so many people out in the world who cannot afford to buy beautiful things, Jamie and his parents decide to clean out the house and the car, selling everything they do not need, in a massive yard sale. When they walk back inside the house, after the sale is complete, they are astonished at the difference their actions have made.

I very much enjoyed this book and the message that it sends. Tracy Bryan conveys how wasteful our spending can be – sometimes way too often – and not only gives reasons for us to be more thoughtful in our spending (or saving our money), but also raises some ideas in how to utilize our funds more thriftily. In having a yard sale, Jamie and his parents are able to rid themselves of all of the wasteful things they own, whilst benefitting people who would not, usually, be able to afford such luxuries. Not only were others given a unique opportunity with the yard sale, but Jamie and his folks were able to appreciate how much the “less is more” approach can be, in one’s own home. I recommend Too Many Things! to adults and children alike, showing that sometimes, others can benefit from the sale of items in your home, which would otherwise gather dust, and that your bank balance could start to regain its healthy status.
