84 books399 followersM. Mukundan(Malayalam: എം. മുകുന്ദൻ) is one of the pioneers of modernity in Malayalam literature. He was born on 10 September 1942 at Mayyazhi in Mahe, a one-time French territory in Kerala. He served as the president of Kerala Sahitya Akademi from October 2006 until March 2010.
Mukundan is known in Kerala as 'Mayyazhiyude Kathakaaran' (The story-teller of Mayyazhi). His native village of Mayyazhi figures in his early works: 'Mayyazhippuzhayude Theerangalil', 'Daivathinte Vikrithikal', 'Appam Chudunna Kunkiyamma' and 'Lesli Achante Kadangal'.
His first literary work was a short story published in 1961. Mukundan has so far published 12 novels and ten collections of short stories. Mukundan's latest four novels 'Adithyanum Radhayum Mattu Chilarum', 'Oru Dalit Yuvathiyude Kadanakatha','Kesavante Vilapangal' and 'Nritham ' carries a change in structure and approach.
'Oru Dalit Yuvathiyude Kadanakatha' reveals how Vasundhara, an actress has been insulted in the course of acting due to some unexpected situations. It proclaims the postmodern message that martyrs are created not only through ideologies, but through art also.
'Kesavante Vilapangal' one of his most recent works tells the story of a writer Kesavan who writes a novel on a child named Appukkuttan who grows under the influence of E. M. S. Namboodiripad. 'Daivathinte Vikrithikal' bagged the Kendra Sahithya Academy award and NV Prize. 'Ee Lokam Athiloru Manushyan' bagged the Kerala Sahitya Academy award. Daivathinte Vikrithikal has been translated into English and published By Penguin Books India.
In 2008, Mukundan's magnum opus Mayyazhi Puzhayude Theerangalil fetched him the award for the best novel published in the last 25 years. Three of his novels were made into feature films in Malayalam . Mukundan wrote the script and one of them bagged a state film award.
Mukundan's latest novel is "Pravasam" (sojourn in non-native land) and tells the story of a Malayali whose journeys carry him around the world.
The French government conferred on him the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 1998 for his contribution to literature.

Loved this short story collection...The best was The wife of the Autorickshaw Driver.. It was positive and funny..Whereas some like Achan or Father were really heartbreaking...Most of the stories were a leaf taken from contemporary events..
ഒരു ചെറുകഥാ സമാഹാരം. അതിൽ ഓട്ടോറിക്ഷക്കാരന്റെ ഭാര്യ ആണു തിളങ്ങി നിൽക്കുന്നത്. പ്രതീക്ഷാനിർഭരവും ഹാസ്യാത്മകവുമാണ് അത്. അച്ഛൻ എന്ന കഥ കണ്ണിനെ ഈ റ നണിയിപ്പിച്ചു കളഞ്ഞു. ,സമകാലീന സംഭവങ്ങളെ ആസ്പദമക്കിയാണ് മിക്കവാറും എല്ലാ കഥകളും.
ഒരു ചെറുകഥാ സമാഹാരം. അതിൽ ഓട്ടോറിക്ഷക്കാരന്റെ ഭാര്യ ആണു തിളങ്ങി നിൽക്കുന്നത്. പ്രതീക്ഷാനിർഭരവും ഹാസ്യാത്മകവുമാണ് അത്. അച്ഛൻ എന്ന കഥ കണ്ണിനെ ഈ റ നണിയിപ്പിച്ചു കളഞ്ഞു. ,സമകാലീന സംഭവങ്ങളെ ആസ്പദമക്കിയാണ് മിക്കവാറും എല്ലാ കഥകളും.

എയർപോർട്ടിലെ ഡിസി ബുക്സിൽ നിന്ന് ഓട്ടോറിക്ഷാക്കാരന്റെ ഭാര്യ എന്ന പുസ്തകം എടുക്കുമ്പോൾ ഒരു ലഖു വായന എന്ന് മാത്രമേ ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചുള്ളൂ. പുറം ചട്ടയിൽ ഒരു കാർട്ടൂൺ ചിത്രവും അകത്ത് ഏഴു കഥകളുമുള്ള വളരെ ചെറിയ പുസ്തകം. 2017ൽ വായിച്ചത് മുഴുവനും ദശാബ്ദങ്ങൾ പഴക്കമുള്ള മലയാള സാഹിത്യങ്ങൾ ആയത് കൊണ്ടാവാം സമകാലിക വിഷയങ്ങൾ ഉള്ള ഓട്ടോ റിക്ഷാക്കാരന്റെ ഭാര്യ എന്ന ചെറുകഥാ ശേഖരം വളരെ ഇഷ്ടപെട്ടത്.
അമ്മമ്മ, രക്ഷിതാക്കൾ എന്നിവയെല്ലാം തന്നെ മാറുന്ന കാലത്തിന്റെ പ്രതിധ്വനികൾ ആണ്. മനസ്സിൽ കോളിളക്കം സൃഷ്ടിച്ചില്ലെങ്കിലും,മുകുന്ദന്റെ ലളിത ഭാഷയിൽ എഴുതിയ ഈ കഥകൾ ഒരു ആസ്വാദനം തന്നെ

പല കാലഘട്ടങ്ങളിൽ പല മഗസിനുകളിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച എം മുകുന്ദന്റെ ഏഴു ചെറുകഥകൾ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയ ബുക്ക് ആണ് ഓട്ടോ റിക്ഷാക്കരന്റെ ഭാര്യ.
കഥകൾ മിക്കതും സമകാലികമായ നമ്മുടെ ചുറ്റുപാടിൽ നടന്നുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നതാണ്. ഓട്ടോറിക്ഷക്കാരന്റെ ഭാര്യ എന്ന ചെറുകഥയിൽ ഉത്തരവാദിത്തം ഇല്ലാതെ തോന്നിയ പോലെ ഓട്ടോ ഓടിച്ചു നടക്കുന്ന ഓട്ടോറിക്ഷക്കാരനും ഉത്തരവാദിത്വബോധമുള്ള അയാളുടെ ഭാര്യയും ആണ് കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ. ഒടുവിൽ ഭർത്താവിനെ ഉപദേശിച്ചു സമയം കളയാതെ കുടുംബം പോറ്റാൻ സ്വയം മുന്നിട്ടിറങ്ങുന്ന ഓട്ടോറിക്ഷക്കാരന്റെ ഭാര്യ സ്ത്രീ ശാക്തികരണത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീകം കൂടിയാണ് എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാൽ അതിവായന ആകുവാൻ തരമില്ല.
അച്ഛൻ - രാവിലെ പത്രം തുറക്കുമ്പോൾ കാണുന്ന വാർത്തകൾ തന്നെയാണ് ഈ കഥയും. മുതിർന്നവരിൽ നിന്നും ബന്ധുക്കളിൽ നിന്നും ശാരീരികമായും മാനസികമായും കുട്ടികൾ അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന പീഡനങ്ങൾ ഒരു കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ തന്നെ താളം തെറ്റിക്കും. മകളെ അതിയായി തലോലിക്കുകയും സ്നേഹിക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത ഒരു അച്ഛന്റെയും മകളുടെയും കഥ.
അമ്മമ്മ- 'നാട്ടിൽ നടക്കുന്ന വലിയ പരിവർത്തനങ്ങളെകുരിച്ച് അമ്മമ്മ എന്നെ ബോധവാനാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു' എന്ന കൃപാകരന്റെ ആത്മ ചിന്തതന്നെ ധാരാളമാണ് ഈ കഥയെപ്പറ്റി വർണ്ണിക്കുവാൻ.
രക്ഷിതാക്കൾ - അയലത്തെ വീട്ടിലെ കുട്ടിയേക്കാൾ ഒരുപടി ഉയരത്തിൽ തങ്ങളുടെ കുട്ടിയെ പ്രതിഷ്ടിക്കാൻ കഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്ന രക്ഷിതാക്കളിലേക്ക് ഒരു എത്തിനോട്ടം.
മലയാളി ദൈവങ്ങൾ - നാടുകാണാനെത്തുന്ന വിദേശീയർക്കെതിരെ നടക്കുന്ന ലൈംഗീക അതിക്രമങ്ങളെകുറിച്ചു വാർത്തകൾ വായിക്കാറുണ്ടെങ്കിലും അതിനെപ്പറ്റി അധികം ചർച്ച ചെയ്യാതെ വിടുകയാണ് പതിവ്. യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ സംഭവിച്ച ഒരു സംഭവത്തിന്റെ കഥാ രൂപം.
ചാർളി സയ്വ് - മയ്യഴിയിൽ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന പലരെയും അക്ഷരം പഠിപ്പിച്ച ചാർളി സായവിനെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള ഓർമക്കുറിപ്പു.
സന്ത്രാസം - കല്യാണ ആലോചന കഴിഞ്ഞതിനു ശേഷം നരൻ എന്ന വ്യെക്തി കടന്നുപോകുന്ന സംഭവങ്ങളും അതു അയാളെ മാനസികമായി ഏത് രീതിയിൽ ബാധിക്കുന്നു എന്നും പ്രമേയമായി വരുന്ന കഥ.

In a series of short stories, M. Mukundan, the eminent writer of Mayyazhi, paints for us the day to day, slice of life fictionalized tales of the people in everyday lives. The tales he composed range from OK, to good, to head scratching, to thought inducing, a full cornucopia.
But sad to say, there isn’t much meat to these stories, a collected anthology from the stories he’d penned in various news publications. Mukundan himself seems the most soulful and engaging, when delving into the semi fictional tales that he crafts about his beloved Mayyazhi; with its colorful history and ever more colorful coterie of characters.
Out of all the collections of stories which are printed here, the one which connected with me the most, is the one titled ‘Malayali Daivangal’ (Malayali Gods). The tale is about a French tourist couple that come to visit Mayyazhi and Kerala and end up falling completely in love with the people, culture and everyday life; almost feeling more at home here than their own. A with most of the other stories, the ending is something unexpected and leaves you in a pensive mood.
Several others such as the titular ‘AutoRichawdriver’s wife’ or ‘Guardians’ are more jovial and wouldn’t be out of place in your weekly periodical. The whole exercise seems more as a passing effort by the author, to exercise his writing and creative muscles, rather than anything that is borne out of some strong desire to explore the human psyche.
Coming in under 100 pages, this anthology is something you can pick up for an afternoon of light reading, to help you relax and unwind. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Enjoyed reading all of them. Just a simple & neatly written collection of stories.
The collection doesn't form any particular genre, it is just a random collection of his stories that were published in the recent years in magazines.
Like Basheer, there are many self references or the narrator is the author himself, a style which love reading.
Hope to see few of them to be made into good movies or part of some anthology.

അട്ടോറിയിക്ഷക്കാരന്റെ ഭാര്യ എം. മുഖുന്ദന്റെ കഥാസമാഹാരമാണ്, മനുഷ്യബന്ധങ്ങൾ, സാമൂഹിക യാഥാർഥ്യങ്ങൾ, മനോവിശകലനം എന്നിവയെ സങ്കീർണമായി ആവിഷ്കരിക്കുന്ന പുസ്തകം. ഓരോ കഥയും ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ വ്യത്യസ്ത വശങ്ങൾ തുറന്ന് കാണിക്കുമ്പോൾ, എഴുത്തിന്റെ ആഴവും വിവരണത്തിന്റെ കൃത്യതയും വായനക്കാരനെ ആകർഷിക്കുന്നു. കുടിയേറ്റജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ദുർഭാഗ്യങ്ങൾ, വിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ പരാജയങ്ങൾ, സ്ത്രീസമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ത്യാഗങ്ങൾ, പ്രകൃതിയുടെയും മനുഷ്യന്റെയും ആന്തരികബന്ധം തുടങ്ങിയ കാര്യങ്ങൾ കഥകളുടെ ആസ്പദമാകുന്നു. മുഖുന്ദന്റെ ഹൃദ്യമായ ശൈലി, ലളിതമായ ഭാഷ, ആഴമുള്ള ചിന്തകൾ എന്നിവ ഈ സമാഹാരത്തെ മലയാള കഥാസാഹിത്യത്തിലെ ഒരു സമാനതകളില്ലാത്ത അനുഭവമാക്കുന്നു.

Seven short stories written by the immensely talented M. Mukundan, published in various magazines between 2011 and 2016. The stories touch upon contemporary sociopolitical issues and are narrated in Mukundan’s characteristic style. My personal favorites are ‘Autorikshakarante bharya’ and ‘Malayali Daivangal’.
