Nuclear Winter #1

First Winter

Rate this book
The people of Aspen Hill have managed to survive every challenge that's come their way since the US ran out of fuel practically overnight. Having fled their home, they're now struggling to rebuild their town in a new location and make the preparations they need before the onset of nuclear winter.

Trev Smith has assumed command of the town's defenders, and is struggling to be a good leader while trying to help his friend Deb Rutledge get over her traumatic past as a prisoner of Gold Bloc soldiers. His cousin Lewis Halsson believes he has preparations for the winter well in hand, and is now looking to the future for ways to bring prosperity for his family and hopefully the whole town. And their friend Matt Larson has taken over as Mayor, facing the daunting task of leading the town just as it faces its greatest challenge. On top of that Matt also worries for his wife Sam, who'll soon be giving birth to their first child without the aid of modern medical equipment or doctors trained in obstetrics.

None of them can truly predict how bad their first nuclear winter will be, but they know how bad last winter was even though it was relatively mild. For a town cut off from outside aid and forced to provide everything for itself, conditions had been brutal. This winter would be unimaginably worse, not only much colder and with more snowfall but also lasting far longer. They'd have to work every moment to prepare, rely on friends and loved ones for support, look for help wherever they could find it, and hope for good fortune.

The Nuclear Winter series continues the story of the five book Best Laid Plans series, with First Winter beginning soon after the end of the fifth book, Determination.

My name is Nathan Jones. I write mainly in the post-apocalyptic and science fiction genres. My most recently completed project is The Challenge, first book of the post-apocalyptic No More Content series, a collaboration with my brother Seth Jones. My next project is Mythas, first book of the fantasy adventure series Band of Outcasts.

I've been a longtime reader of post-apocalyptic fiction, and like to explore various scenarios in which disasters could occur. One interest has been observing just how fragile our modern life is, and how little it would take to send us back to a low tech existence that people in general no longer possess the knowledge or skills to survive in. That interest inspired me to write and publish my completed post-apocalyptic series Best Laid Plans, comprising the five books Fuel, Shortage, Invasion, Reclamation, and Determination, and to build on that story with the completed Nuclear Winter series, which begins shortly after Best Laid Plans ends and includes the four books First Winter, First Spring, Chain Breakers, and Going Home, as well as the standalone novel Fallen City.

Outside the Best Laid Plans world I've written the completed post-apocalyptic Mountain Man series, with the novels Badlands, Homecoming, Homeland, Mountain War, Final Stand, and Lone Valley. I also have the completed post-apocalyptic Isolation series with Shut In, Going Out, Starting Anew, and Holding On. My current post-apocalyptic series is No More Content, with the recently released first book The Challenge.

I've also been a longtime reader of Science Fiction and Fantasy, with an equally deep love of those two genres. This has inspired multiple projects, the most recently completed being my science fiction novel Caretakers, Book Two of the Stag Privateers series, sequel to Last Stand. My other science fiction story is Boralene, Book One of the Stellar Merger series.

The stories I've written in the Young Adult Fantasy genre have now been moved over from another pen name to be available alongside my other books. These books include the completed The Watchers trilogy with Undying Heights, Ithel's Library, and Deep Dwelling, the completed The Protectorate series with Corsairs, Revenants, Invaders, and Shipwrights, and the standalone children's fairy tale Firefly Girl.

Really Great Read

I was intrigued by the end of book one and ended up reading the entire series before reviewing. This is a great story with each new book reaching back and pulling more character out of the subjects. The individual stories develop slowly but they begin to meld into the trials and tribulations of one little community pulling together and overcoming nearly insurmountable odds. I really liked the way a minor and forgetable guy early on in the story becomes the main character by the end of the books. Highly reccomend this well crafted series.

Another good one

This starts a new series, with the characters from the last, and I enjoyed it more than those, since there weren't endless battles to skim over. I rated most of the others a 4, so this should get a higher rating, but it isn't perfect. There are really too many characters that are pretty similar, and none of them is center stage, so you really 'know' them well. Overall though, it's a good book.

Rough read for a prepper

I winced more than once, over "preps gone South" (like food stolen, meds used up). I actually looked up how to remove windshield glass! You've made me want to hoard clothes, tools, etc. Good read. I just wanted to know the people better, to care about them more, so 4 stars, not 5.

Hooked

When the first series came to an ending, I was really not ready to say goodbye to the crowd of Aspen Hill. While checking the more works from the author, to my pleasant surprise I came across the “Nuclear Winter” series. More Aspen Hill and all that surround them.

A very good read

Excellent Plot and Character development. The storyline moves along without making any particular character or area seem over or under emphasized. Looking forward to continuing this series.

It was a long book with many grammatical errors, definitely needs a proofreader and editor.
