It’s a thin book but Rebecca Stefoff explains literary devices very well. Despite being an English teacher, I picked up lots of knowledge from her book. Case in point: I didn’t realise that a simile can use “resembles” and “than”. I particularly enjoyed how she guided us through the intricacies of the language. When is a simile a cliche? What makes an metaphor extended? Where can you find personification in popular culture? Using a delightful mix of figures of speech from famous people and her own literary devices, she is the lighthouse casting a powerful light that guides you through the murky darkness. Highly enjoyable and informative!
