An engaging way to introduce young readers to parts of speech, particularly similes and metaphors. Explains the differences, and how best to use and not use said parts of speech. Fulfills Common Core standard for literature.
It’s a thin book but Rebecca Stefoff explains literary devices very well. Despite being an English teacher, I picked up lots of knowledge from her book. Case in point: I didn’t realise that a simile can use “resembles” and “than”. I particularly enjoyed how she guided us through the intricacies of the language. When is a simile a cliche? What makes an metaphor extended? Where can you find personification in popular culture? Using a delightful mix of figures of speech from famous people and her own literary devices, she is the lighthouse casting a powerful light that guides you through the murky darkness. Highly enjoyable and informative!
