Rooted in the tradition of noir storytelling, dark, self-destructive and inappropriate.
Mason Prophet Long watches from behind the wheel of a taxi as an evening storm thunders down the beach. Alcohol and drug abuse has forged a crack in his personal paradise, a chasm that grows bigger each day. Fueled by the bar scene of Sunset Beach, Mason finds himself weaving a soap opera of relationships that suffer badly from his happy depravity.
When he finds his eight o'clock fare and friend Carmen dead in bed, strangled with blue-black-yellow-purple bruises around her throat, the crack widens. Drowning in alcoholic blackouts, Mason’s memory of the night of the murder remains dark, and police detective Kendyll Hall immediately makes him her number one suspect.
When an odd little man approaches Mason with knowledge that only the killer could know, and then disappears, Mason tries to hunt him down before the police can act on their suspicions. Unfortunately for Mason, no one else has actually seen this odd little man. Detective Hall is not buying his story, and the longer he searches: the more he remembers, the more he questions his own sanity.
Chet Stevens was born in Chicago, IL. He spent his childhood banging around the south side of Chicago before graduating from DeLaSalle High School.
He entered the Army at age 20, spending the majority of his time at Fort Carson in Colorado. After the Army, he spent some time searching for a career path, finally setting his sights on a career teaching English.
Chet headed for Florida, thinking he could go back to school where it was cold or where it was warm. Warm won out. For more than 30 years, he worked and taught at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
Recently, he moved back to Illinois to spend more time with his wife, his daughters and his granddaughters.
A fantastic story! You think you have it all figured out, but you don't. The characters were likeable, but not too good to be true. Even the characters you probably would judge harshly in reality, you liked reading about. I really enjoyed this book. I won this book on a goodreads.com giveaway.
An interesting story but somehow, I could't quite get into it. Maybe it is the characters lack of depth and subtility or the implausibility of certain twists in the plot that kept me off a bit. A nice summer read but for a story about a killer with mental health problem, we prefer "The passenger" from Patrick Senéchal. Thank you Goodreads Giveaways for the opportunity to discover this author and Mr Stevens for the personnalised note that came with the book. It was a nice attention and I appreciated it.
