The Pemberley Affair

Rate this book
Elizabeth Bennet Darcy, a newlywed, finds that adjusting to the expectations of London society during the season imposes a vastly different set of expectations upon her. Her upbringing, although respectable, did not prepare her for rigorous adherence to the ways of the haute monde.

When she is asked to chaperone the daughter of Lady Descartes, a former actress married to a member of the aristocracy, Elizabeth is hesitant to take on the responsibility, particularly when the young lady, a lively young woman who shuns her genteel upbringing and goes by the name of Tommy, takes an interest in a young man who has been disinherited by his father because of his ambition to become a poet.

Ultimately, the drama must be resolved at a gathering at Pemberley, at which the redoubtable Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Mr. Collins and his wife, Elizabeth’s friend Charlotte, the Bingleys, and the warring parents of the young couple are present for a confrontation that tests Darcy’s trust in his wife and Elizabeth’s confidence in her role as the mistress of Pemberley.

This story is very short and published by a firm, Pure Read, who state that all their novels are clean Christian publications.

The tale is a sequel to P&P. Elizabeth draws the attention, while at a dinner, of a former actress who has married well and has a young daughter, Tomasina/Tommy. Lady Caroline Descartes intends to give her daughter a season in London BUT with her elderly husband in failing health and with society knowing of her former occupation is seeking a sponsor for Tommy. Elizabeth is the lady so "honored". Georgiana decides to forward her own debut after meeting the spirited young lady her sister is sponsoring.

After some success at Almack's and in other arenas, it appears that Tomasina has formed an attachment with young Lord Philip Edgerton...who has been disowned by his father due to his desire to make his way in life as a poet.

And then Lady Catherine hears that not only has her nephew taken into his household the daughter of an actress but has allowed the girl to meet a suitor...unchaperoned. And Lady C. is on her way to his estate to deal with this "Pemberly set".

Yes, this Caroline is nobody's fool and she plays her role as wife and mother well as many parties make their way by invite or not to Pemberley.

This novella has no real angst but is cleverly written as one set of parents find their way to work for their child's happiness and a relatively secure future.

This is a short, sweet clean P&P sequel. Set the year after the Darcy's marry they are in the London for the season; they are convinced to assist a friend by keeping her 16 year old 'hoyden' daughter. When she falls for a poet Lady Catherine has to get involved and hilarity ensues

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players…” William Shakespeare

This Clean Regency Romance is part of PureRead and is free of any objectionable content.

This was an adorable story of young love, perseverance and an excellent performance by a talented actress. OMG! Elizabeth and Darcy find themselves with two young girls in the midst of their first Season attending balls at all hours and a parlor full of interested young men.

Poor Darcy… he scowled appropriately to keep the young men at bay. Elizabeth teased him by saying she would tell a potential fortune hunter that they were going to let Pemberley the following week and that she was in the process of selling her shoes so they could pay the butcher’s bill. Hilarious!

The best part of the story was when everyone converged on Pemberley and Lady Catherine stormed the place. OMG!! It was delicious. And then, Lord and Lady Descartes stormed in. What a performance. Man, that was so good. All the major parties were present for a showdown. It was so cute.

A Delightful Romp

Happily Ms McColl offers a gentle comedy of manners which shows off the new Mrs. Darcy's impertinent nature. The interplay between herself and the pleasantly clueless Darcy (oh, not in being a buffoon but rather in that distinct way in which husbands maintain a sense of plausible deniability) is like biting into a chocolate truffle--rich on the outside with a surprise waiting to be savored. The young romance and the way it is brought into the realm of reality is in many ways worry of Mr Coward or Mr Wodehouse. Wait for that in the last few chapters. Close to flawless. Really about 4.5 stars.

Really nice book with Darcy and Elizabeth as hosts of the main plot.
This Darcy I think it is very accurate to what it would have been.

This is an excellent sequel to Pride and Prejudice. It's a perfectly constructed short story. Darcy and Elizabeth are front and center and consistent with Jane Austen's timeless characters.

I absolutely loved Caroline Descartes, a former actress who ended up marrying Lord Descartes. Her husband's health is failing, and she wants to be there to nurse him at their country estate. Elizabeth Darcy agrees to sponsor Caroline's daughter, Thomasina, better known (and more appropriately) as "Tommy," for a London season.

Tommy is a delightful, guileless 16-year-old who's a bit of a hoyden and not exactly haute ton material. She and Georgiana become good friends, and their friendship proves to be beneficial for both. Philip Cavendish immediately shows interest in Tommy, but his suitability as a suitor comes into question when the Darcys learn he's been disowned by his father.

The climactic scene here is just delightful. It involves the Darcys, Tommy and Mr. Cavendish, Georgiana, Lord and Lady Descartes, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Mr. and Mrs. Collins, and Lord and Lady Edgerton (parents of Mr. Cavendish). You'll find it worthwhile to read this short story just to enjoy that one clever, humorous scene, although the whole novella is excellent.

This story is a post Pride & Predjudice novel. Elizabeth and Darcy host "Tommy", the daughter of an acquaintance, for the Season. Her presence has brought Georgiana out of her shell but she is a bit rough around the edges for Darcy. The best scene in the book is the last one where Tommy's mom saves the day for her daughter. Darcy is also very romantic in this very short story.

I think the book blurb does a great job of telling you what you are in store for. I found this on the free list and dove in. I liked seeing Darcy and Lizzy the married couple. It was nice to know the prejudice and misunderstandings is behind them and now they love and know each other as man and wife. I had to laugh at a minor disagreement that starts as Lizzy is explaining how the gentleman Tommy is in love with is a poet. The old Darcy's habit to prejudge comes out and he gets a cold shoulder from Lizzy. It humanized the couple because what married couple hasn't dealt at some point with silly arguments? By the next morning while Darcy hates the little discord the wrinkle works itself out and there is laughter and content restored. I don't know about you but I loved seeing the simple moments with the couple jokes over a breakfast table, simple comforts of a doting husband brushing his wife's hair. This a fast, clean read but I found it a lovely little snack in between the next meatier book I choose. Enjoy!

Nice

This gives a little extra dip into the magic that is Elizabeth and Darcy. The true story lies in those they try to assist. I can't help but love the final act as true talent takes the stage!

This short story was a little on the dry side for my taste. The plot did not excite me either.
ODC are to cold and aloof in theire interaction and it is lacking in sweetness and romance.

Will not reread this.

I really enjoyed this one. Poor Mr. Pemberley had all kinds of things going on around him and his wife just took care of things. Things do have a chance to snowball into big things. It was fun watching things unfold. This was also book 18 of the Pure Read Clean Read Vol. 2 bundle of 41 books. I voluntarily chose to review this and I gave it a 5* rating. A short clean read.

Just like catching up with the characters! Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth, some of her family and friends...plus some new friends. Of course, Lady Catherine, the antagonist we love to hate.Would be fun to see more including the Bennett's.

In this P&P sequel newly wed Elizabeth Darcy is asked by Lady Descartes (ex-actress, married to an Earl) t0 chaperone her daughter Lady Thomasina. This also brings out Georgiana into limited society. And shows Darcy in the light of the foil to Elizabeth.
So overall an enjoyable novella

An enjoyable story

An enjoyable story That needs an additional proofreading As Some of the characters names are Not In the Correct Usage. It is confusing and causes The reader to stumble and try to figure out what and who is saying what to whom. I enjoyed the author's humor.

Excellent Variation

I so much enjoyed this story! A way to see what happened to Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam! She has managed to be herself even when dealing with "the ton".
