Big Sky Ever After: a Montana Romance Duet

Rate this book
Two Bestselling Authors / Two New Novels in Two New Series / One Big Sky

Welcome to Montana a land of fine whisky, big-spread ranches, and an open prairie of possibilities.

Nathan’s Big Sky by M. L. Buchman:
Chef Nathan Gallagher’s escape from New York lands him in the most unlikely of places: Montana. With his past dumped and his future unknown, he seeks something new. If only he knew what.
Former rodeo star and born-and-bred cattle rancher Julie Larson loves the land and the horses. The cattle and her three big brothers? Not so much. The cowhands and ranchers’ sons, even less. When she rescues the lost chef, they must find a future where their hearts can thrive—it lies under Nathan’s Big Sky.

Tartan Two-Step by Grace Burrowes:
Scottish whisky distiller Magnus Brodie’s long-anticipated bicentennial batch of whisky has been sabotaged. His sole hope to prevent financial disaster? Buy the Logan brothers’ Montana distillery. It’s the only way to secure Bridget MacDeaver’s services as a “cask-whisperer.”
Bridget refuses to sell her grandpa’s distillery, even to save her brothers’ ranch. When an old enemy threatens, her only ally is the man who’s determined to steal her grandpa’s legacy—and her heart!

Grace Burrowes started writing as an antidote to empty nest and soon found it an antidote to life in general. She is the sixth out of seven children, raised in the rural surrounds of central Pennsylvania. Early in life she spent a lot of time reading romance novels and practicing the piano. Her first career was as a technical writer and editor in the Washington, DC, area, a busy job that nonetheless left enough time to read a lot of romance novels.

It also left enough time to grab a law degree through an evening program, produce Beloved Offspring (only one, but she is a lion), and eventually move to the lovely Maryland countryside.

While reading yet still more romance novels, Grace opened her own law practice, acquired a master's degree in Conflict Transformation (she had a teenage daughter by then) and started thinking about writing.... romance novels. This aim was realized when Beloved Offspring struck out into the Big World a few years ago. ("Mom, why doesn't anybody tell you being a grown-up is hard?")

Grace eventually got up the courage to start pitching her manuscripts to agents and editors. The query letter that resulted in "the call" started out: "I am the buffoon in the bar at the RWA retreat who could not keep her heroines straight, could not look you in the eye, and could not stop blushing--and if that doesn't narrow down the possibilities, your job is even harder than I thought." (The dear lady bought the book anyway.)

Overall, I'm giving this 4.5 stars.
Nathan's Big Sky by M.L. Buchman starts out well. Nathan is a New York City chef who ends up in Montana to visit his brother after a crisis in his restaurant kitchen. The descriptions of the ranch give a real feel for a working spread that is trying new ventures outside of cattle ranching and the people involved. Nathan's acclimatization is aided by Julie, a cowgirl and building contractor, working on the ranch. I just thought the story ran out of oomph during the last part of the book. Not to give anything away. I was disappointed with Nathan's decision to leave and even coming back in the way he did. It seemed weak and if I were Julie, I don't think I would have acceded so easily.
Tartan Two-Step by Grace Burrowes is a delight. I love Ms. Burrowes Regency books and most of her contemporaries, but this book about a whisky/whiskey distillery in Montana is pure gold. Magnus is visiting from Scotland, hoping to lure the distiller away to fix a bad batch in his own distillery in Scotland. Bridget has her own troubles and soon Magnus is not only head-over-heels but working to make Bridget's life easier. It's a lovely romance with lots of Scotland and whiskey as well as scenic Montana.

It's a two-novel book-- and I'd never heard of one of the authors...but I'm a huge Grace Burrowes fan, so of course I had to have it....

The M. L. Buchman story is rather meh....New York chef Nathan and rancher's daughter Julie fall in love -- but can their relationship survive all the Big-Sky challenges? I mostly didn't care too much. Nathan's an incredibly tentative hero who spends most of the story walking on egg shells lest he upset Julie. Julie's a strong and forceful woman who's got Daddy issues -- and who seems way more invested in her relationship with her horse Clarence than she ever does in her relationship with Nathan.

Burrowes's "Tartan Two Step"....ah....It's carefully crafted, nuanced, and very enjoyable...just like the whisky that's such a main player in the story. Scots distiller Magnus needs Bridget and her distillery to save his from disaster. Bridget falls hard for the confident and charming Magnus, but she refuses to sell her legacy. Can they find their way to a HEA?

So..I compromised on 3 stars. And...one of these days, I've got to spend some time in Montana!
