With more than 100 DIY recipes, it’s easy to see why I’ve reborrowed this book numerous times from my local library.
For the author, household cleaning is not a chore but an extension of love for her family and friends.
Lots of recipes call for simple pantry ingredients .. baking soda, vinegar, distilled water, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, Castile soap, and citrus rinds.
Basic essential oils such as lavender, lemon and tea tree are also good to have on hand. To that, the author also recommends peppermint, eucalyptus, clove, lemongrass and geranium.
Supplies such as glass spray bottles, mixing bowls, measuring cups, glass containers and natural bristle brushes are all recommended. Surprisingly, microfiber cloths are not!
Lots of photos, easy to understand organic home recipes, and sectionalized household categories make this fun to pore over.
Granted some recipes will take a little more effort to make and may cost a bit more (not all essential oils are cheap), but breathing in the wholesome aromas are so much better than toxic over the counter products!
Okay, so I didn't read everything on every page. But I got a good feel for the book. What I liked, I liked that it had some great information in the beginning of the book about cleaning ingredients and what they're good for, and also information about materials to use. What I didn't like, that there are SO many different recipes. I bet there are people out there that want to mix up a separate spray for stuffed animals, and another for linens, but that's not me. Also I should clarify my stance, I'm not super in to organic, I don't use any essential oils, and I'm not opposed to store bought cleaner. However due to some extreme allergies (including to essential oils) we've tried to use some simpler recipes for every day cleaning. I picked up a few great tips, and I'll be trying one or two recipes for sure. If you're really interested in cleaning organically then this will have some good information for you.
You never realize how many chemicals are in the products you use on a daily basis. From everything that you wear, digest and put on your face and body - chemicals are everywhere. The book was written in an easy concise way. Nothing felt overwhelming. The begging of the book gives you a low-down of the chemicals we come in contact with, where they are located, and how to avoid them. The next chapter are broken down into areas of your life that need a chemical makeover. There are plenty of easy to make recipes for all major household cleaners, plus some other ones that I am glad the author chose to include in this book. She covers each area pretty extensively: Kitchen, Bathroom, Living Room, Bedrooms, Laundry Room, Clothing and Closets, Kid's Stuff, Home Office, Medicine Cabinet, Mud Room, and Pets. I loved this so much, I am going to buy a copy for my home.
Cleaning definitely sparks joy for Natalie Wise & she manages to communicate that in such an enticing manner that reading about cleaning sparked joy in me. I think if she would be my housecleaner that would spark even more joy. Oh well. I didn't try any of the recipes but her cleaning schedules are definitely smart.
Lots of great cleaning recipes, but research the essential oils before using around kids & pets or if you have other health issues. A book to read annually to remind you of sports to clean that often get missed.
I am definitely interested in making my cleaning routines a bit simpler. However, Wise seems to complicate things. I want basic recipes that can be used for multiple things. I appreciate the breadth of the recipes in this book but didn't think it was exactly for me.
